This invention relates to improvements in quickly adjustable Vises.
The conventional vise is adjusted through the turning of a screw to position the movable jaw of the vise relative to the stationary jaw thereof for clamping or releasing the work; Continuous movement of the adjustable jaw through turning movement of the operating screw is slow and tedious.
It is, therefore, a primary object of the present invention to provide a vise wherein the movable jaw of the vise may be slid into and out of rough positions of adjustment, coupled with screw fed movements for final clamping adjustments and release therefrom, whereby operation of the vise is rendered easy and expeditious.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a vise arranged for screw fed movements of the movable jaw of the vise for clamping and initial release; and for fast longitudinal sliding movements of said movable jaw for rough positions thereof, together with means controlled by limited turning of the screw mechanism for changing to andfrom screw feed control of the movable jaw.
A further object of the invention is to provide a vise of the character described having simple and effective operating mechanism, which is strong and durable, which is inexpensive to manufacture, and which is well adapted for-the purposes described.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of they improved vise, and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, andall equivalents thereof. p

Referring now more particularly to the drawings it will appear that'the stationary unit of the vise is indicated generally by the numeral 5, and the movable section is indicated generally by the numeral 6. The former includes a box section 1 having a rectangularly'shaped I port.

The movable section 6 of the vise includes an elongated, rearwardly projecting, rectangularly shaped, hollow sleeve l3 which extends into and through the opening 8 of the box section 1, closely fitting the same. A portion of the bottom wall of the sleeve I3 over some of the ratchet plate teeth, is, open as is shown in Fig. 1 The forward end of the section 6 has a screw threaded bore l 4 therethrough, communicating with the hollow interior of the sleeve. Above said end portion of the sectionB there is an integral curved jaw forming portion l5 directed and arranged so as to be complementary to the jaw .l I.
A tubular socket member l6 has its inner end slightly reduced and formed as a screw H, the threads thereof being left hand and being engaged in the screw threaded bore M of the section 6. The screw portion I1 is formed with an enlarged bore [8 affording communication between the hollow interior of the socket member I6 and the interior of the hollow sleeve I3.
