Description
11, 1948- R. s. SHAW 2,441,449
SNOW SHOVEL Filed NOV. 21, 1946- Patented May 11, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE SNOW SHOVEL Robert Samuel Shaw, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada Application November 21, 1946, Serial No. 711,395
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to improvements in wheel mounted snow shovels, and consists essentially of a shafted blade having lateral pivotal connection with a Wheeled chassis or truck.
I-Ieretofore all such wheeled implements apparently were without means for conveniently ejecting the snow from the accumulating blade or shovel proper, and moreover were of such construction as to render them too expensive and heavy for the average proprietor of premises from which snow must be removed.
The principal object of the present invention, therefore, is to provide in a wheeled hand shovel means which will permit the shovel not only to be rocked longitudinally on the axis of its axle and to be swung on an are centered intermediate of its wheel gauge, but also to be tilted to the right or left for the purpose of ejecting the snow to one side of the path under snow-removing treatment.
Another important object, according to the foregoing statement, is to provide an implement 7 of the class specified which will be eflicient, durable, effective in maneuverability, light in weight, and inexpensive to produce and to purchase.
With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention conists in general of certain novel details oflconstruction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and: t
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wheeled shovel as constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a rear elevation showing certain shafts in a level position in each direction, the blade accordingly elevated from the pathway, and in chain lines the shafts and blade tilted on the axis of a certain bar as for ejecting the snow load.
In the present embodiment the invention consists of a pair of twin shafts I connected by cross members or cross bars l2, and having mounted on their forward end portions with an equal distribution of its weight on both, the snow removing blade or shovel proper l3. At the operator's end the shafts are preferably bent to plough handle form as indicated by the reference Illa.
The chassis or truck consists of a pair of coaxial wheels l4 which are freely rotatable on an axle l5. Rising from the axle is a structure composed of divergent bipods I6 and H, the struts of each of which converge and connect with a longitudinal bar [8.
The end portions of the bar [8 are pivotally journalled in coaxial bearings [9 carried by trusses 29 which pend rigidly from the cross members l2 and are a part thereof.
In operation the operator pushes the implement ahead of him by grasping the plough handles Illa until the blade I3 is loaded, whereupon the load is lifted by leverage on an arc of the axis of the axle I5 by bearing down on the handles, the axle acting as the fulcrum, then the entire implement is swung to the right or to the left on an are having its axis intermediate of the wheels, until the blade or scoop clears one edge of the path, and finally the load is ejected by tilting the blade on the axis of the bar I8.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Iclaim:
In a hand snow removing implement, a 00- axially wheeled truck including an axle and a frame consisting of a pair of bipods rising divergently from the axle and supporting a longitudinal bar, and a shovel structure includin a blade, said structure being pivotally associated with said longitudinal bar and arranged to tilt laterally while said truck remains upright.
