S. Letters Patent, entitled Walking beam, filed April 12, 1946, and bearing Serial No. 661,839.
The present invention is for the same purpose as the invention of the aforementioned application and differs therefrom in that provision of a pivotally mounted walking beam is dispensed with.
The primalry object of the present invention is to provide a deep well pumping unit that may be operated with a minimum of power and which will be especially efficient for use with wells of great depth.
A further object of the invention is to provide a supporting beam forming a part of the pump unit and which is normally maintained in a Vfixed position from which it is capable of being readily released and swung to a position in which it-will not interfere with the removal of pump rods or pump tubing from an oil well.
' A further aim of the invention is to provide a normally fixed supporting beam possessing sumcient resiliency to cushion the parts at the instant that the direction of movement of the pump rod is reversed.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fullyapparent from the following description of the drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment thereof. and wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the improved deep well pumping unit;
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view thereof taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 2-2 of Figure 1; y
Figure 3 is a. transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 3-3 of Figure l;
Figure 4 is anv end view in elevation of the unit with the cables removed therefrom;
Figure 5 is a'transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 5 5 of Figure l;
Figure 6 is a horizonal sectional view taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 6-6 of Figure 1;
Figure 7 is a fragmentary side-elevational view. partly in vertical section of a portion of the unit;

Figure 9 is a cross sectional view taken substantially along a plane asindicated by the line 9-9 of Figure 8.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, a' deep well pumping unit in its entirety is designated generally Il and includes an upright supporting frame, designated generally li and which includes upwardly and inwardly inclined corner posts I2, a top or platform i3 which is supported thereby. an upright jack post i5 and horizontal braces Il.
A pair of fulcrum brackets i6 are bolted to the upper side of the platform i! and are adapted to engage in recesses of bifurcated fulcrum members i1 which depend from a supporting beam i8, as seen in Figure 5. The members i5 and i1 are provided with aligned openings for receiving a pivot pin Il which extends therethrough and by means of which the beam il is pivotally supported on and above the frame ii.
The beam il is formed of laterally spaced channel members 2l which are auranged with the channel portion thereof 'ripening outwardly of one another and in laterally spaced apart relationship. l
A pin or shaft 2l extends through intermediate portions of the channel member 20, adjacent one end of the beam I2 to provide a journal for a pair of` pulleys 22 which are journalled thereon and disposed between the channel members 20. As best seen in Figures 5 and 6, a shaft or axle 2l extends through the intermediate portion of the opposite ends of the channel members 20 and through bearing blocks 2|. mounted in the channel portions thereof at the opposite end of the beam Il. A pair of pulleys 25 are journalled on the shaft 23 and disposed between said last mentioned ends of the channel members 20. The channel members 2li are provided with downwardly opening sockets 20 at each end thereof provided to receive ball joints 21 formed on corresponding ends of rigid braces 2l. The opposite ends of the braces 2l are pivotally connected by tapered pins 29 to bifurcated brackets 30, one of which is fastened to each of the corner posts l2. adjacent the lower ends thereof. It will thus be seen that the four braces 2l normally function to support the beam il in a rigid horizontal position above and at a rightangle to the vertical axis of the plane ii.
The pulleys 22 lare located substantially over the'upper end ofthe well tubing 3l of an oil well from the upper end of which well tubing Il projects a pump rod I2. A cable or other flexible member 8l is trained over each of the aligned pulleys 2l anden; said cables having corresponding ends which are connected by fastenlngs Il to the .upper end ot the pump rod 32. The opposite ends of the cables 33 are connected to the socket portion of an eye member 38, the eye oi' which turnably engages a pin or sub-shaft 38 which projects outwardly from one side of a. substantially semi-circular counter-weight 31 which is keyed to an end of a crank or driven shaft 38.- .Thefcrank or driven-shaft 38A termi; nates at the side of a countcrweight 31 ,from which the sub-shaft 36 projects so as not to interfere with the cables 33 when the counterweight 31 is revolved. The sub-shaft 38 is disposed concentric with the outer edge o! the counter-weight 31.
From the foregoing it will be readily apparent that by providing a counter-weight 31 which substantially equals the weight of the pump rod 32, the pump rod 32 can be reciprocated by the deep well pumping unit i with very little power required. The shaft 38 is driven in any suitable manner and from any suitable source of power and it will be readily apparent that in moving in either direction from its upper dead center posi'- tion, as seen in Figure 1, it will exert a pull on cables 33 to raise the pump rod 32 until the counterweight 31 is moved through an arc of substantially 130.V During this movement, gravity pull exerted bythe counter-weight 31 will counterbalance the weight of the pump rod 32 until the counter-weight has reached its lower dead center position. After being moved therebeycnd by the einen shaft sa the downward pun exerted by the' pimp rod 32 will overcome the weight of the counter-weight 31 so that the shaft 38 .will be revolved with a substantially uniform load thereon and with a very small amount of power re-' quired.
The supporting beam I8 and the braces 28 possess sufficient resiliency to cushion the pump rod 32 at the instan.; that the direction of its movement isl reversed. The outer'portion of the peripheries of the pulleys 22 are at all times located directly above the well tubing 3i so that the pull on the pump rod 32 is' in a direction axially of the well tubing 3i.

2. A deep well pumping unit as in claim 1, said braces being deachably connected to the frame and pivotally connected by ball and socket connections to the ends of the beam.
3. In a deep we ll pumping unit as in claim l. said beam being formed of laterally spaced channel irons, and said pulleys being journalled between the ends of said channel irons.
4. A deep well pumping unit comprising an upright supporting frame, a beam iulcrumed thereon and supported thereabove and at right angles thereto, pulleys journalled in each of the ends of said beam, cables trained over said pulleys and having corresponding 'ends connected-to a deep well pump rod, disposed beneath one end of the beam, a driven eccentric counter-weight disposed beneath the other end of the said beam and pivotally and eccentrically connected to the opposite ends of said cables, and detachable means for maintaining said beam in substantially a horizontal position.
5. A deep ,well pumping unit as in claim 4, said detachable means comprising a plurality of diagonal braces having lower ends detachably connected to corner posts oi the frame, said braces having ball portions on their opposite ends. and socket members secured to the ends oi said beams for receiving and forming a universal connection with said ball portions, whereby when said irst mentioned ends of the braces are .detached from the frame said beam may be swung to a position out of the upward path of movement of the pump rod or the pump tubing containing said rod.
