The invention relates to a counterbalanced vertical swing particularly of the type used with,
a walking beam in well pumping.
More particularly the device comprehends a combination of a pump unit and a back-side crank installation whereby a plurality of wells may be pumped from a single pumping unit.
It is an object of the invention to provide, in combination with a pumping unit, a Vertical l0 swing having means for suitably balancing the swing `for any combination of pumpingtakeois that may be used therewith.
Another object of the invention is provision of the combination of a pumping unit and a back-side crank device for pumping a plurality of additional wells and means for selectively connecting pull rods to the crank device and disconnecting them therefrom.
A further object is to provide a swing power take-off device and hand-operated hookoff that may be operated without shutting down the driving unit.
A further object is .the provision of a pull rod power takeoff device and hooko means that may be operated to selectively connect or disconnect the pull rods without disturbing the remainder of the unit.
Other and further objects will be apparent from the following disclosure considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1` shows an elevation of a device of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a detailed end view of a portion of the swing shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the portion of the device shown in Fig. 2.
The present invention is somewhat similar in general arrangement to that shown in a copending application of W. C. Trout and myself, Serial No. 60,956, iiled January 27, 1936, except the present invention embodies the hooko connections in the combination.
The numeral i indicates generally the back side View of a pump unit driven by a belt 2 or other suitable driving means. Suitable gearing is provided in gear case 3 to rotate the crank shaft 4. Mounted on shaft 4 is a crank element 5, which is provided with counterbalancing means 6 and adjustable wrist pin openings 11. The pitman rod 8 attached thereto is thus driven by unit l to produce desired reciprocatory movement in the swing, which is generally designated by the numeral 9, for purposes hereinafter i described. Y
Swing 9 comprises essentially a Samson vpost made up of a pair of frame members comprising elements lll, Il and l2, which elements are suitably connected at their upper ends by the cap i3. The lower ends of these frame members are 5 provided .with flanges i4 through which the frame is securely bolted to a foundation i5, as is clearly disclosed in Fig. 1. It is understood that these frame members, which are located in general parallel relation, are identical in structure i0 and that the foregoing description therefore applies to both.
Mounted upon the cap i3 of the supporting frames is the center iron i6. Rotatably supported in the center iron is a shaft il, upon i5 which walking beam I8 is mounted. Depending in converging relation from beam it are structural members i9 and 20, which are attached to plates 2i near their point of convergence. A pitman 8 is suitably connected to the walking 20 beam unit as at 22. Similarly the hooks 23 are secured to this unit as by pins 2t and 25. It is understood that any suitable means may be utilized lfor securing the component elements in desired relation. It is understood also that the 25 device is not limited to any number of pull rod connections, since obviously the addition of any suitable number of pull rods lies within the province of the skilled artisan.
The device above described provides recipro- 30 catory motion to elements 23, which may be connected to the pull rods to operate the pumping equipment connected thereto, as is well known in the art. It is frequently desirable to disconnect one or more pull rods from the pumping 35 unit in order to service the wells or other reasons, as is well known. The present invention therefore provides a convenient apparatus to disconnect one or more of the pull rods and to reconnect such rods, when desired, without disturbing the remainder of the system or interfering with the continuous operation thereof. The invention comprehends provision of means for effecting the hooking off and hooking on of the pull rods while the unit is operating and the mecha- 45 nism for which will now be described. Since the mechanism tor disconnecting or reconnecting the respective pull. rods are alike, description of one only will bz.; given.
Mounted upon base i5 at either end of the 50 main frame members is a support comprising members 26 and 2l, which are securely mounted upon base i5 and are interconnected at their upper ends to provide pairs of co-operating frames. Mounted upon each support is a cross by the bolt 35 to form a link 35 which is also xed upon shaft 28. It is apparent that any angular movement of the lever 2t will produce corresponding angular movement of plates Sii, 3d', and the yoke 35. The triangular plates it,
' 3d are connected at the corners opposite shaft 28 by stay bolts 3l 32, over which are telescoped sleeves 33, whereby a rigid interconnection of spaced plates 30, iii is had. In a similar manner the stay bolt 3b has a sleeve which is telescoped over it. The angular movement of lever 29 is limited by top and bottom stops d2, di), respectively, which are attached to the frame members 2l.
Connections between the swing e and pull rods 3@ comprise bar il, which is attached in any suitable manner to the pull rod 36. The bar Sill, which is provided with a notch i5 in its lower side adjacent the pull rod 3d as seen in Fig. 1, passes over the bolt 35 in the yoke 35'. The end of bar 3l is movably secured through bolt di to the straps 38 and cross bolt Il@ which make a link 38'. This assembly passes between stay bolts 3i, 32 of the plate unit attached to shaft 23. Straps 38 extend in both directions from connecting bolt All, the right end, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, extending a short distance beyond stay bolts 3l, 32 of the triangular plate` unit.
Assuring the pull rods to be attachedat both sides of the swing, the operation of the device is as follows: n
If it is desired to disconnect right-hand pull rod 36, lever 29 is moved to the left, as shown in Fig. l. This movement causes yoke d' to lift bar 3l' and pull rod 36. As the pull rod is moved to the left on the succeeding stroke of the crank, yoke 35' engages notch i5 in bar 3l before the end of the stroke is reached. Further movement of the swing causes link 3S' to be released from hook M in member 23. Since bolt All is to the right of the center of link 3d the link end falls by gravity immediately upon being released from the hook liti. The pump unit is therefore disconnected from the swing without disturbing the operation of the remainder of the unit and the purpose of the hookoif is accomplished.
To reconnect the pumping unit to the swing, the reverse procedure is followed. Lever 2S! is moved to the right, whereuponbolt 3l will return link 38 to a position to re-engage hook lil upon the succeeding stroke. Upon such re-engagement and movement of the rod as the stroke progresses, yoke 35 falls by gravity from notch d5 and the hook on is completed without disturbing the operation of the unit.
It is thus seen that the invention provides a vertical swing provided with means for selectively nnecting pull rods thereto or disconnecting them therefrom without disturbing the function ing of the unit. Itis understood that while pullrods 3S extending longitudinally with the direction of the swing, yet the device is not conned to the pumping of wells so aligned, as it is well known in the art to provide suitable means for changing the direction of the pull such as horizontal swings or pumping powers. The hook oi and hook on arrangement is clearly susceptible to use independent of the particular pumping unit, walking beam or swing and may be disposed astucci on the foundation l5 for connecting and disconnecting the pull rod 36 to the source of power by means of any suitable connection such as the rod It is also understood that While a specific embodiment has been disclosed, the invention is not confined thereto, but it is to be limited only by the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is:
1. A. pumping mechanism comprising, in combination, a support, a frame swingably mounted upon said support, means for rocking said frame about its supporting axis, power take-od con.- nections to said frame, and means on said support for selectively disconnecting said power take-off connections.
2. A pumping mechanism comprising, in combination, a support, a frame swingably mounted on said support, means for rocking said frame about its point of support, an adjustable balance weight on said frame, power take-od connections to said frame, and means on said support for selectively connecting and disconnecting said power take-oir connections.
3. A pumping mechanism comprising, in combination, a jack post, a shaft mounted thereon, a swing mounted on said shaft comprising a beam and converging braces attached thereto and extending laterally therefrom, power take-off means attached to said braces, means for connecting a load to said take-ofi means', and means for swinging said swing upon the shaft.
4. A pumping mechanism comprising, in combination, a jack post, a walking beam swingably mounted thereon, power take-od means connected to said walking beam to transmit power to reciprocating rods, and independently mounted means for selectively connecting said rods to said power take-ofi.
5. In a pumping device a vertical frame, a shaft mounted thereon, a walking beam mounted on said shaft and provided with depending con.- verging frame members, power take-01T means attached to said frame members and arranged to detachably engage rods to be driven thereby, and means for selectively disconnecting driven rods lfrom the power take-ofi" means.
6. A swing including supporting frame, a shaft mounted on said frame, a swing on said shaft comprising a beam and converging braces extending laterally therefrom, pull rods connected at the apex of said converging braces, and means for selectively disconnecting said pull rods fromsaid swing.
7. In a pumping device, a pedestal, a walking beam supported on said pedestal, converging members depending from said beam, pull rod connections on said members, and hook off means mounted on said pedestal for connectingand disconnecting said pull rods and said members.
8. In a pumping device, a pedestal, a frame swingably supported on said pedestal, an adjustable balance weight mounted on said frame, means for detachably connecting pull rods to said frame, and means for connecting and disconnecting said pull rods and said connecting means.
9. In a pull rod connection, asupport, a link pivoted thereon, a handle to move said link, a pull rod adapted to be connected to said link, a yoke on said rod, a walking beam and swing power operated hook thereon to engage said yoke, and means whereby movement of said handle lifts said yoke into the path of said hook to connect said rod thereto.
10. In a pull rod connection a support, a link pivoted thereon, a handle to move said link, a pull rod adapted to be connected to said link, a yoke on said rod, a power operated walking beam swing and hook adapted to engage said yoke, and means whereby movement of said handle lifts said yoke into the path of said hook to connect said rod thereto, the pull of said power hook serving to release said link.
11. A power unit, a walking beam assembly, a vertical swing frame depending from said beam, a power rod connecting said unit and said swing, and hook off and hook on connections for said swing so that the well pull rods may be connected or disconnected to said swing while it is in operation.
12. A walking beam, a roller counter balance adjustable along said beam, a support for said beam, a swing frame below said beam, a hook oi connection for said swing, and a hook off connection at the rear of said swing.
13. A Walking beam, a roller counter balance) adjustable along said beam, a support for said beam, a swing frame below said beam, a hook off connection for said swing, and a hook off connection at the rear of said swing, said connections each comprising a pivoted hook.
