Description

v 1 April 27, 1948.
P. E. PURCELL ,448
LOADER FOR GREASE GUNS Filed April 24, 1946 l7 L I I 3 0 5 7 2 S I 1 Nil 21 2 3 27 INVENTOR.
PETE/Q 1 U/QCELL ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 27, 1948 HNITD STTES P TENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates generally to the art of lubrication and particularly to what are known as pressure grease systems.
The main object of this invention is to provide a means for easily loading the grease containers of pressure grease systems and to do so easily and quickly without entrapping quantities of air or wasting the lubricant in the filling process.
The second object is to provide a simple form of loading device whereby any of the conventional types of grease guns can be adapted to the use thereof.
I accomplish these and other objects in a manner set forth in the following specification as i1 lustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a grease gun with the cap removed therefrom and with a portion thereof broken away for shortening purposes.
Fig. 2 is a section taken along the line 2-2 in Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a partial section taken along the line 3-3 showing the loader about to be inserted into the gun cylinder but showing the loader empty.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the loading element which constitutes my invention.
Similar numbers of reference refer to the same or similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring in detail to the drawing, there is shown the common form of grease gun cylinder [0, having the operating lever I l, and ejecting piston l2 in the screw cap l2-A, from which lubricant is forced through the outlet l3, through a flexible conduit M, to a point of delivery,
The screw cap l5, and piston rod It, with its attached operating button I1, and button lock ll--A, are also indicated. To the piston rod 16. is attached a cup leather l8, and is held by the washers I9 and on the end of the piston 16, by means of a nut 2i The spring 22, serves to urge the cup leather [8, toward the outlet Hi.
The mechanism thus far described is in common use and its application is well understood. The difficulty of such mechanisms however, is most noticed in the charging of the cylinder It, in which air is often trapped causing objectionable conditions at the point of ejection. In order to overcome this difficulty, there is provided a cylindrical loader 23, shown in Fig. 4, i which the slot 24, serves as a gate for the loading paddle making it a simple matter to completely fill the member 23 along any portion of its length.
It will be noted that there are formed in the member 23, the beads 25 and 26, the latter having a somewhat smaller internal diameter than does the former and the space between the beads 25 and 26 being suiiicient to exceed the cup leather It, by the internal diameter of the head 26, being I such that the cup leather It, cannot be drawn therethrough whilethe internal diameter of the head 25, is such that the cup leather l8, can be forced therethrough. The operation of the device is as follows:
Assuming that the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 3, the operator fills the loader 23, through the slot 24, in front of the cup leather I8, until the entire loader 23, is full from the cup leather E8, to the end.
The button I1, is now withdrawn, pulling the entire loader 23, into the cylinder I ll, after which the cap IZA is put into place on the discharge end of the cylinder I0, and the device is ready for use,
The grease gun is now operated in the usual manner until empty, after which the loader 23, can be extended by merely unscrewing the cap |2A, and pushing the piston 16. inwardly, The purpose of the button lock l1-A, is to hold whatever compression is placed on the spring 22, thereby keeping a pressure on the grease within the gun.
I claim:
1. A loader for grease guns consisting of a cylindrical shell having a slot formed therethrough along the lengththereof, through which the loading is performed, and having a pair of beads formed around said shell near one end thereof and spaced from each other sufiiciently far to accommodate the cup leather or a grease gun.
2. A loader for grease guns consisting of a cylindrical shell having a slot formed in the side thereof for loading purposes. said shell being adapted to receive the cup leather of a grease gun and having a stop therein for preventing the complete withdrawal of said cup leather in a backward direction and a second step in front of said first mentioned stop and spaced therefrom to receive said cup leather and to partially retard the forward movement thereof.
