1 Claim.
My invention relates to a clamp or locking device which is well adapted for clamping the cylinder of a p-ump upon a barrel.
An important object of the invention is to provide means, including a barrel hole tting or screw threaded plug, whereby the cylinder of a pump may be readily clamped in a selected ad justed position, upon any depth of barrel.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pump clamp, for quickly and conveniently locking a, pump at any depth in a, barrel, without deforming or injuring the cylinder or barrel of the pump.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a clamp or locking device of the above mentioned character, which is extremely simple and quite inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the clamp or locking device embodying my invention, and showing the same in use for clamping a pump cylinder upon a barrel, parts in section,
Figure 2 is an enlarged plan view of the clamp or locking device, parts in section,
Figure 3 is a central Vertical section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2, and,
Figure 4 is a vertical section taken on line 4 4 of Figure 2.
In the drawings, where for the purpose of illustration, is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a barrel or liquid lled drum, having one of the standard sizes of screw threaded barrel holes 6 provided in one of its ends. Arranged upon the barrel 5, in position for removing or pumping out the liquid contents thereof, is a lift type or barrel pump l, including the pump cylinder 8. This pump cyliny.der 8 extends through a cylindrical opening 9 in a screw threaded barrel hole fitting or plug I0, and is adapted to be clamped in place within this opening 9 by means to be described. The pump cylinder 8 has a close t within the opening 9, but is free to slide, or to be longitudinally adjusted therein. The barrel hole tting III has a hexagonal head II, and external screw threaded portions I2 and I3, to fit different sizes of standard barrel holes. The screw threaded portion I2 is shown in engagement within the screw threaded barrel hole 6, Figures 1 and 3.
Arranged upon the top of the fitting I0 is a ilat preferably generally circular clamp plate or ring I4, having an elongated radial handle I5 formed integral therewith. The clamp plate I4 has a central circular opening I6, for receiving the pump cylinder 8, and this opening may be .of the same diameter as the diameter of the opening 9. Formed in the clamp plate I4, and preferably arranged near the handle I5 is a circularly curved slot Il'. This circularly curved slot I'I is eccentric with respect to the circular opening I6 and also with respect to the opening 9, see Figure 2. A screw I8, seated upon a washer I9, engages within a screw threaded opening 20 in the barrel hole ntting II); and this screw passes through the slot I'I, which is slightly wider than the diameter of the screw. The eccentric slot II is arranged so that when the clamp plate I4 is turned about the pump cylinder 8, until the shank of screw I8 is at the end of the slot I'I radially nearest to the center of the opening I6, the pump barrel 8 will be free to be adjusted longitudinally, as desired.
The operation of the clamp or locking device is as follows:
The screw I8 is loosened, so that the clamp plate I4 may be turned about the pump cylinder B, to loosen or free such cylinder. When the shank of the screw I8 reaches the end of the eccentric slot Il, radially nearest to the center of the circular opening I 6, the pump cylinder will be free, and it is then adjusted longitudinally to the desired depth in the barrel 5. When this has been done, the user turns the clamp plate I4 in the opposite direction, for clamping or locking the pump cylinder 8 in the selected adjusted position. The handle I5 is, of course, provided to facilitate the turning of the clamp plate I4. The coaction of the screw Ill within the eccentric slot I1 causes the pump barrel 8 to be securely clamped within the opening 9 of fitting I0. The clamp plate I4 exerts a clamping force upon one side of the pump cylinder, and the pump cylinder is clamped or locked against the opposite side of the opening Q. A wedging action between the stationary screw I3 and the eccentric slot Il occurs when the clamp plate I4 is turned, for tightening the same. When the pump barrel 8 has thus been clamped in the selected adjusted position, the screw I8 may be tightened to lock the clamp plate in the clamped position.
It is thus seen that an extremely simple device is provided, whereby the pump may be quickly and conveniently adjusted to diierent depths within a barrel. The clamp or locking device is positive in action, and it is extremely strong and durable.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement .of parts may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A tting adapted to be mounted upon a. barrel and provided with a. main opening, a. clamp plate arranged upon 'the tting and provided with a ymain `opening and an eccentric slot, the main openings being adapted to receive the cylinder of a. pump or the like, :and a pin secured to the fitting and projecting into the eccentric slot and co-act- '.4 ing with the slot when the clamp plate is turned for shifting the clamp plate bodily laterally to clamp the cylinder against the side wall of the main opening in the tting.
