'('CL 114-208) This invention relates to an anchor and has for an object to provide an anchor having aligned flukes integral with the shank of the anchor and a pair of aligned integral flukes on the shank movable to operative position at right angles to the rst named nukes to prevent dragging of the anchor, and movable to a position parallel with the first named ukes to permit the anchor to be stored in a minimum space.
A further object is to provide simplified means for adjusting .the movable ilukes to either position and holding the movable .flukes in adjusted position.
A further object is to provide apparatus of this character which will be formed of a few strong, simple and durable parts, which will be inexpensive to manufacture, and which will not easily get out of order.
With .the above and other objects in View the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.V

Figure l is a top plan view of an anchor constructed in accordance with the invention showing the anchor in collapsed inoperative position.

Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing the adjusting and holding means in position to permit the integral pair of movable flukes to be adjustable to operative position at right angles to the flukes carried by the shank o f the anchor.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional View taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2 but showing the adjustable flukes in operative position.
Figure 5 is a plan View of the integral adjusttable flukes showing the rectangular opening therein for receiving the adjusting and holding means.
Figure 6 is a top plan view showing the shank of the anchor and the flukes integral therewith having a rectangular collar at the bottom of the shank to enter the similar shaped opening of the adjusting and holding sleeve to hold the flukes in operative or in inoperative position.

Referring now to the drawings in which like characters of .reference designate similar parts in the various views, the anchor shown in Figures l to 10 inclusive comprises a shank I0 provided at the upper end with a ring I I and having a pair of aligned lukes I2 integral with the bottom. The shank is provided with a substan tially rectangular collar I3 just above the flukes I2. I
Disposed on the shank above the iiukes I2 is a pair of aligned integral flukes I4, there being a substantially rectangular opening I5 at the integral inner ends of the flukes, see Figure 5, into which the collar I 3 is loosely received.
An adjusting and holding sleeve I6 is provided with U-shaped .bayonet slots Il at diametrically opposite points thereof, see Figures 8 and 9, and above the slots the sleeve is provided with an external screw thread I8. Below the slots the sleeve is formed with a substantially rectangular neck I9 adapted vto be inserted in the opening I5 of the aligned adjustable ilukes I4 and engage the collar I3 to hold the adjustable iiukes in either an operative position or in a released position.
Inoperative position the adjustable iiukes I4 extend at right angles to the iiukes I2 which are integral with the shank I0, see Figure 4, and prevent dragging of the anchor on the bottom of a body of water. In inoperative position the adjustable nukes |4 extend parallel with the nukes |2 so that the anchor will occupy minimum space in storage.
Adjustment of the adjustable nukes is effected by sliding the sleeve I6 upwardly on the shank IU so that the neck atV its lower or outer end is removed from or raised above the coller |3 and thereby disengaged from the opening in the nukes to permit turning of the adjustable nukes about the collar 'of the shank. For permitting such movement of the sleeve a pin 20 is engaged transversely through the shank I and the ends of the pin project into the bayonet slots I1 and the pin is at the upper ends of the vertical legs ofthe slots when the sleeve is in lowered position to engage the collar I3 for holding the adjustable nukes in adjusted position.' The normal position of the pin is shown in Figure 2. When the sleeve is slid upwardly as shown in Figure 3 the pin is Y lodged intoV horizontal portions of the bayonet slots so that the rectangular neck I9 is withdrawn from the collar I3 and permits rotation of the adjustable nuke to either vof the two positionswhereupon the sleeve maybe lowered to engage the neck with the collar and preserve the adjustment,
' Forcontrolling the sleeve a lock nut 2| is provided, this nut being preferably hexagonal in shape and'provided at each of its sides with a bayonet slot 22, see Figures 4 and 10. The nut isin the natureof a capV I0, see Figure 3, having an opening 23 to receive the shank IIJ, and having an internal screw thread 24 to engage the screw thread I8 of the sleeve I6.
The` nut 2| is Vadapted tobe turned on the sleeve to receive the ends of the pin in a pair of opposite bayonet slots 22, see Figure 2, in which position of the nut the lower sides of the bayonet slots of the'nut engage underneath the ends of the pin and positively prevent the sleeve from being slid upwardly. The nut is releasably held in this position by a pivot latch 25 which is mounted on one of the faces of the nut and is provided with a detent 26, see Figures 4 and 10, Whichenters the vertical portion Orfronejof the bayonet slots backjof one of the ends of the pin andV positively prevents rotation of the nut. However when the latch is rocked upwardly from the positionv shown in Figure 10 to withdraw the detent 26 from a position back of the pin, the nut maybe rotated in a retrograde direction to lodge vthe Vends of the pin in the vertical portions of the bayonet slots of the nut and permit both the nut and the sleeve being raised vertically as a unit to the position shown in Figure 3 to permit adjustmentrof the adjustable nukes |4 to either operative or inoperative position. When the adjustmenthas been made the sleeve and nut are lowered as a unit and the nut is then turned to l lodge the ends of 4the pins ,in the bayonet slots 22 and thenthe latch is swung to'lodge the detent K26giri one o f the bayonet Slots back of one of the ends of the pins to prevent accidental rotation of the n ut* Y' Vlin the I nodined vform of the invention shown Vin`llig1'1res`ll toV 13 inclusive the shank 21 of the anchor is provided -at the lower end with a rectangular collar 28 and'below the collar is formed with integral aligned nukes 29, and at Vthe upper end the shank is provided with a Vring 30, as pre-A viously described.
In this form of the'invention however the adjusting and holding sleeve is formed in two sections,l namely a lower member 3| which is integral with the aligned adjustable nukes 32, and an upper member 33 which is slideably mounted on a threaded collar 34 on the shank, uniformly increased in diameter.
The lower member 3| is provided at diametrically opposite points with vertically disposed slots 35 adapted to receive depending tongues 36 formed on the upper member 33, see Figures 12 and 13. The upper member 33 is provided with a transverse slot 31 adaptedr to receive a transversely disposed pin 38 carried by the shank 21.
A lock nut 39 is threadedly engaged with the collar 34 of the shank and normally bears upon the upper member 33 of the adjusting sleeve and holds the tongues 36 thereof lodged on top of the lower member 3| of the adjusting sleeve, see Figure 1, to hold the adjustable nukes 32 in either operative or inoperative position.
When the nut 39 is backed upwardly on the v threaded shoulder 34 the pressure of the upper wall of the slot 31 on the pin 38 is relieved so that the upper member may be rotated through an arc of about ninety degrees to bring the tongues 36 into register with the slots 35. IAt this time the lower member 3| together with the adjustable nukes 32 carried thereby may be raised vertically on the shank until the tongues reach the` bottom of the slots at which time the locking rectangular Opening 40 in the adjustable nukes 32 will be raised off the rectangular collar 28 lower member of the adjusting sleeve whereupon.
theV nut 39 may be tightened to hold the upper member in this position and hold the top wall of the slot 31 in engagement with the pin 38 to preserve the adjustment.
The adjustable nukes 41 have formed integral therewith an exterior adjusting sleeve 48 shorter than and slidable on an inner sleeve 49. Y
The outer memberis provided at diametrically opposite points with pins which project into L-shaped bayonet slots 5| formed at diametrically opposite points in the inner member 49. When the pins project into the horizontal portion of the slots the outer member cannot be raised but when the member 49 is turned axially on the shank to bring the vertical legs of the slots into register with the pins the pins will ride up in the slots to permit the outer member being raised to adjust the adjustable nukes. Both the outer member 48 and the inner member 49 may now be rotated to rotate the adjustable nukes to adjusted position, the pins 50 meanwhile riding lnmbers 48 and 49 .will have been turned to posi-V tions that will bring the pins 50 into registration with the vertical portions of the slots 4-6 and whereupon the member 48 may be lowered to engage the rectangular collar 42 in a rectangular opening 52 of the adjustable flukes to lock the adjustable flukes against further rotation. The
member 49 may now be turned axially to lodge the pins D in the horizontal portion of the bayonet slot 5I of the upper member 49 and prevent dislodgement of the adjustable lukes from adjusted position.
A pin 53 is engaged through the collar 43 of the shank 4| and the ends project into respective circumferential slots 54 of the inner member. A nut 55 is engaged on a threaded portion 56 of the collar 43 and may be tightened against the member 49 to releasably lock the upper member against the pin 53 and prevent accidental rotation of the upper member.
Since the operation of theparts has been described as the description of the parts progressed it is thought that the invention will be fully understood without further explanation.
What is claimed is:
1. In an anchor having a shank, a pair of flukes integral with the bottom end of the shank, a non-circular collar on the shank at its juncture with said lukes, a pair of aligned ilukes pivotally adjustable on the shank having a noncircular opening at the center portion through which the collar extends, said opening being of such size that the collar is free to turn therein to dispose the flukes integral with the shank parallel with or at a right angle with the adjustable lukes, and a sleeve axially slidable on the shank having its outer end portion shaped to t between the shoulder and the wallsI of the opening for releasably effecting non-turning connection between the collar and the adjustable flukes.
2. In an anchor as claimed in claim 1, means 0n the shank for limiting the movement of said sleeve, and means for releasably locking the sleeve in a position removed from the collar 3. An anchor as claimed in claim 1 wherein the sleeve is provided with U-shaped slots, a pin extended ythrough the shank and the slots of the sleeve whereby the sleeve may be releasably held in a position removed from the collar, and means on the sleeve engageable with the pin for releasably locking the sleeve in collar engaging position.
4. An anchor as claimed in claim 1 wherein the sleeve is provided with U-shaped slots, a pin extended through the shank and the slots of the sleeve whereby the sleeve may be releasably held in a position removed from the collar, and a nut threaded on the inner end of the sleeve having slots therein engageable with the pin for releasably locking the sleeve in collar engaging position.
