Adjustable cable guided members of this general character are disclosed in my prior Patent No. 2,313,995, granted March 16, 1943, for Crane limit switch. Thus in Fig. 5 of said Patent No. 2,313,995 are shown a pair of hairpin type guides which are adjustable to embrace a pa'irof dead or non-moving cables. However, in view of the fact that said hairpin type guides are only adjustable in a straight line direction, the center line of the stop weight can register with the center line of the bracket or platform associated with the bodily movable hoist block or pulley, to which the crane hook is attached, only when the limit stop weight and the hoist block are of a given size relatively to each other and when the cables with which the hairpin type guides cooperate are in a given alinement with each other.
In practice the hoist block may have a multiplicity of cable lines associated therewith, with the dead or non-moving cables in various difiermay be readily removed to suit a particular installation.
Another object is to provide adjustments whereby the axes of the cable guided members may be located at any two points within a very wide range with respect to the axis of the reset weight.
Another object is to minimize the number of or center line difl'erent parts required for accomplishment of the aforementioned desirable results.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear. i i The accompanying drawings illustrate a preierred embodiment of the invention which will ent positions relatively to each other according to the particular installation. As is well understood by those skilled in the art, it is very desira- 'ble that the guides may be arranged to cooperate with dead cables, in order to minimize the wearing of the cables by the guides during operation of the crane.
A primary object of the invention is to provide a reset weight wherein the associated guides are universally adjustable for cooperation with any desired pair of cables in the group.
Another object is to provide for such adjustment of the cable guided members as to insure centering of the reset weight with respect to the hoist block under all of the various conditions met with in practice.
Another object is to provide novel and simple means for efiecting the desired adjustments of the cable guided members and for rigidly securing the same in their adjusted positions.
Another and more specific object is to enable assembly of the guides with respect to the cables without requiring unreeving of the latter or disassembly of the former from the reset weight.

In the drawings, the numeral l0 designates a weight which is adapted to be supported by a cable I I (Fig. 5) from one end of a lever 12 pivoted at l3; the other endof which lever is provided with an enlargement or counterweight I4 which biases the same to its dotted line position when it is relieved of the overpowering bias afiorded by weight 10. Positioned upon the upper surface of weight Io are a pair of reversely arranged flat, punched sheet metal plates 22, 22 of identical form. Plates 22', 22 are preferably of rectangular contour, as shown in Figs. 1 and 6, and the same are respectively provided with circular openings 23, 23 (Fig. 4) which are alined in the assembled positions of said plates to freely accommodate the shank of bolt l7; the latter being provided with the aforementioned integral flange or shoulder 2% to restrain said plates jointly against substantial upward displacement from weight Id, Bolt I! is also provided with an eye 25 for attachment of cable ll (Fig. 5).
Each plate 22 is provided with an arcuate slot 26 (Figs. 1 and 6) which is concentric with the aforementioned opening 23 therein; said slots 26 being :alined with each other throughout the length thereof when plates 22 are in their normal (or rectangularly alined) positionsShown in Fig. l. The upper surface of weight I is provided with a recess 21 (Fig. 4) which is preferably square or rectangular to accommodate the correspondingly shaped head 28 of a bolt the thread ed shank 29 of which projects upwardly, with clearance, through said slots 25-. Any other suitable form of bolt (such as a carriage bolt) may, of course, be employed if desired.
Superimposed upon the top surface of the upper plate 22 is a fiat metal washer 39; a lockwasher 3| being interposed between washer 3E! and a nut 32, which is adapted when tightened to clamp the plates 22 in a fixed relationship to each other. As will be understood the head 28 of bolt 29 will act under such a condition to restrain plates 22 against rotary movement jointly relatively to weight l0. However, upon loosening of nut 32 (Fig. 1) plates 22 may be adjusted angular-1y relatively to each other, and rotatively with respect to the shank of eye bolt l1, throughout the total range afforded by the slots 26, 26 in the plates 22. One such angular adjustment of plates 22 is shown in Fig. 6; it being understood that when the desired adjustment of plates 22 relatively to eachjother has been efiected said nut-32 may-be tightenedto maintain such adjustment. I

Said dowels 3'! are positioned to underlie the loop portions of the U-bolts 35; the same having the lower cylindrical portions thereof located in drilled counterbores, as shown at 38 in Fig. 3. Said dowels are ring staked over a portion of the sharp cone-shaped upper ends thereof, as shown at 39 in Figs. 3 and 7. The threaded ends or shanks of U-bolts 35 have nuts 32 associated therewith for drawing the loop portions of said 'bolts against the portions 36 of the respective guides, whereby dowels 31 are pressed or forced ,into said portions 3% to clamp the latter to plates 22 and to prevent. turning of said portions 36 with Lock washers 3| are preferably interposed between plates 22 and nuts 32 to prevent accidental loosening of the latter.
- As best illustrated in Fig. 7, the ring staking involves use of a suitable tool (not shown) to upset inwardly an annular portion of one surface of a plate 22; said upset portion overlying the base portion of the cone-shaped end of a dowel pin 37 to rigidly attach the latter to plate 22.
In Fig. l I have shown the portions 36 of the guidesv extending to a substantially maximum degree from one side of the plates 22, but it. is to V beunderstood that the length or lengths to which the portions 49. 52 of the guides extend from said side of the plates may be varied as desired by lnerely loosening the nuts 32 associated with bolts .35, efiecting the desired adjustments of portions 36 with respec t to plates 22, and then re-tightening said nuts. Also it is to be understood that if desired one or both of the portions 36 of the guides may be assembled with respect to plates 22to extend from the opposite side from that shown in Fig. 1. Also as indicated in Fig. 6, by merely loosening-the nut 32 associated with-bolt 29 the plates 22 may be partially rotated relatively to the eye bolt l1 and to each other, to bring the portions 48, 4B closer to or. more widely separated from each other, within the range afforded by the length ofsaid arcuate slots 26.
, Inasmuch as the adjustment in the field of the various parts for a: given installation will ordinarily be permanent, I preferto peen or upset the shank ends of bolts 29 and 35 over the nuts 32 respectively associated therewith, whereby the adjustments effected will be maintained.
The. portions til of the guides are in the form of open helices, as best illustrated in Figs. 2', 4 and 5; and as will belapparent from consideration of Fig. 5 this open'forrn of the helices. provides 'for effecting, cooperative positioning thereof around the cables dland i2 without unreeving the latter iremblock es. Disengagement of guide portions db from said cables may, of course, be effected by a reverse operation of the parts. This feature is of importance both in original installations; and in the event that replacementof weight H3. or any of the parts carried thereby is required. As aforesaid, it is desirablethat the weight Id be initially positioned and retained in centered relationship to the block 43; the latter having a bracket or platform Massoclatecl. therewith in a known manner. Upon movement of block 43 upwardly toward a given extreme position, the platform 43 3 lifts weight it) to remove the overpowering bias from lever l2, whereupon the latter is free to move under its normal bias to efiect the desired operation of the limitswitch mecha-. nism; Although I have shown lever l2. asprovided with. abiasing counterweight tqhit is obvi- .ous that any suitable spring biasing means might be substituted for said counterweight.
As aforedescribed, adjustment of the distance or distances between the vertical axis of weight plates 22 individually to the desired degree about the vertical axis of weight l0, as represented by eye bolt H. In the particular form of the device herein illustrated the adjustments are such that each helix 40 may be positioned at any distance varying from four and one-half inches to eleven inches with respect to the aforementioned axis of weight l0.
Inasmuch as the guides are preferably of identical form the helix 40 of one is arranged to project upwardly whereas the helix 40 of the other projects downwardly to equalize the distances of the respective cables from the center line of weight 10. However, in certain installations it maybe found desirable to have both of the helices project upwardly or downwardly relatively to the top surface of weight [0, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my device, and at the same time actually increasing .the range of adjustment of said parts.
As best illustrated in Fig. 1, the ends 45 of helices 40 are bent or turned outwardly with respect to the main bodies thereof to insure against likelihood of engagement thereof with the cables associated therewith. A similar result might be obtained by grinding or shearing said ends to avoid abrasion of the cables thereby.
The guides 36 are formed of a suitable resilient metal, such as steel; the resiliency thereof serving to reduce the blows upon the cables due to vibration or swinging of weight l0, thus minimizing the likelihood of cable failure due to hammering or wear. The guides are tempered to such a degree that any excess length of the straight portions 36 thereof may be removed by the use of a hack saw after the various parts have been assembled, in the event that such excess length interferes with the hoist mechanism.
As will be apparent from consideration of Fig. the upper end .of the weight supporting cable It is constrained to travel in an arcuate line (by reason of its attachment to lever I2 pivoted at l3). Hence if platform l l is moved rapidly downwardly out of supporting relationship to weight Hi When the latter is in its upper extreme position there will be an inherent tendency of said weight to swing pendulumwise. If the helices 4D, 40 surrounding the respective cables 4| and 42 were rigidly mounted with respect to weight In said helices would tend to hammer or pound against their respectively associated cables. A similar result would follow in the event of vibration of weight It) from any cause. However, as aforestated the resilient intermediate portions of the respective guides 36 act to absorb or cushion the effect upon the cables M and 42 of such vibration or swinging of weight III, with the desirable results aforedescribed.
As will be apparent from consideration of Fig. 1, the arcuate extent or length of slots 26 in plates 22 is preferably such that'each of the helices 40 may be positioned at any desired point within an arcuate area extending through at least 90 degrees; the inward and outward adjustments of portions 36 ofthe guidesafiorded by U-bolts .35 determining thewidth of such arcuate areas.
Moreover, by providing for reversible mounting of portions 36 withrespect to plates 22 the positioning areas aiforded for helices 40 are doubled. The result is that said helices maybe jointly located at any desired pair of points within a complete annular area, the width of which area is determined by the adjustment of portions 36 with respect to plates 22, as aforedescribed.
I claim: 3
1. An adjustable cable guided device comprising, a limit stop weight, a pair of metal plates carried by said weight at one end of the latter, a cable guided member carried by each plate,
each member having a straight portion adjustable in a straight line throughout a given range relatively to its associated plate, and associated means affording rotative adjustment of said plates relatively to each other throughout a given range.
2. An adjustable cable guided device comprising, a limit stop weight, a pair of metal plates carried by said weight at one end of the latter, a cable guided member carried by each plate, each member having a straight portion adjustable in a straight line throughout a given range relatively to its associated plate, associated means affording rotative adjustment of said plates relatively to each other throughout a given range, and each member including an end portion in the form of an open helix,the axis of which helix is arranged at a right angle to the straight portion of said member.
3. In combination, a crane limit stop weight, a pair of members each having an end portion formed to be guided by a cable and a straight portion supported in a plane at a right angle to thevertical center line of said weight, means for effecting adjustment of said straight portion axially of its length throughout a predetermined range, and associatedmeans for effecting rotary adjustment of each member bodily throughout a predetermined range with respect to said vertical center line of the weight, for the purpose set forth.
4. In combination, a crane limit stop weight, a pair of members each having an end portion formed to be guided by a cable and a straight portion supported in a plane at a right angle to the vertical center line of said weight, means for efiecting adjustment of said straight portion axially of its length throughout a predetermined range, and associated means for efiecting rotary adjustment of each member bodily throughout a predetermined range with respect to said vertical center line of the weight, forthe purpose set forth, each of said cable guided portions being in the form of a vertically positioned open helix, whereby the samemay be cooperatively assembled with respect to a cable without requiring unreeving of the latter.
5. The combination with a reset weight for a cranelimit stop, of a pair of sheet metal plates supported by said weight at one end of the latter, mean-s providing for pivotal adjustment of said plates either individually or jointly throughout a predetermined range with respect to said end of the weight, said last mentioned means including means for retaining said plates in their adjusted positions and for restraining the same against rotary displacement with respect to said weight, a member supported by each of said plates, each member comprising a rod-like portion adjustable at will in a straight line with respect to its associated plate, andeach member. also comprising a vertically extending open helix, said both: being adapted to be guided by a cable, and the open i-oim or said helix providing for cooperative positioning thereof about the cable without requiring unreeving or the latter.
6-; In combination, a crane limit stop reset weight, a universally adjustable cable-guided device for attachment thereto, said device comprising a pair of punched sheet metal plates of like form, each of said plates having formed therein a circular opening to freely accommodate the shank of a bolt supporting the weight and an arcuate slot concentric said opening, a clamping bolt the shank of which penetrates said ai'cuate slots when said plates are in assembled relation, said clamping bolt being adapted when tightened relatively to said plates to hold the same inanyadjusted positions thereof within the range afierded by the respective slots, associated means for holding said clamping bolt in a substantially fixed'position with respect to said weight, a cable guided member carried by each plate, each of said members comprising a relatively long, straight portion lying against one surface of its associated plate, a pair of U-bolts adjustably supported by each plate, the loop portions of each pair of U- bo-lts being engageable with one of said straight portions to clamp the latte'r to the plate in any adjusted position of said straight portion, and each of said members also comprising an integral end portion in the form of an open vertical helix, for the purpose set forth.
7. In combination, a crane limit stop reset weight, a universally adjustable cable guided device for attachment thereto, said device comprising a pair of punched sheet metal plates of like form, each of said plates having formed therein a circular opening to freely accommodate the shank of a bolt supporting the weight and an arcuate slot concentric with said opening, a
clamping bolt the shank of which penetrates said arcuate slots when said plates are in assembled relation, said clamping bolt being adapted when tightened with respect to said plates to hold the same in any adjusted positions thereof within the rangeafiorded by the respective slots, associated means for holding said clamping bolt in a substantially fixed position with respect to said weight, a, cable guided member carried by each plate, each of said members comprising a relatively long, straight portion lying against one surface of its associated plate, a pair of U-bol'ts ad'justably supported by each plate, the loop portions of each pair of U bolts being engageable with one of said straight portions to clamp the latter to the plate in any adjusted position of said'straight ortion, each of said members also comprising an integral end portion in the form of openvertical helix, for the purpose set forth, and each of said plates having at least one hardened steel dowel partially embeddedin a surface thereof to be engaged by the straight portion of the respective cable guided member, whereby upon tightening of the U-bolts said dowel will be forced into said straight portion, to insure against turning of the latter relatively to the plate.
8-. As article of manufacture, a universally adjustable cable guided device for attachment to a reset weight of a crane limit stop, said device comprising a pair of punched sheet metal plates of like form, each or: saidplates having formed therein a circular opening to freely accommocat'e' the shank of a bolt supporting the weight and anarcuate slot concentric with said opening, a clamping bolt the shank of which penetrates said arcuate slots when saidplates'are in assembled 8 relation, saidclai'nping bolt being adapted when tightened with respect to said plates to hold the same in any adjusted positions thereof withinthe range afforded by the respective slots, associated means for holding said clamping bolt in a substantially fixed position with respect to said Weight, a cabie guided member carried by each plate, each of said members comprising aire'latively long, straight portion lying against one surface of its associated plate, a pair of U-bolts adjustably supported by each plate, the loop portions of each pair of U-bolts being engageable with one of said straight portions to clamp the latter to the plate in any adjustedpositionof Said straight portion, each of said members also comprising an integral end portion in the form of an open vertical helix, for the purpose set forth, and each of said plates having a countersunk recess formed in a surface thereof beneath the loop portion of each U-bolt, a hardened steel dowel pin having a lower cylindrical portion and an upper conical portion positioned within each recess, said dowel pins being respectively rigidly secured in position by ring staking the metal of said plate surfaces thereabout, said conical portions projecting a substantial amount beyond said plate surfaces to bite into'the straight portions or said members upon tightening of the respective U-bclts, whereby turning of said members relatively to said plates is positively prevented.
9 .7111 combination, a crane lim-it stop reset weight, an adjustable cable guided device for attachment thereto, said device comprisinga pair oi supporting plates rotatively adjustable with respect to each other and to the reset weight, a metal member ofsubstantial resiliency supported by each plate, each of said metal members comprising a portion adjustable ina straight line -withrespect to its associated plate and an end icon portion adapted to surround" a cable to be associated therewith, the arrangement being such th-at 'said end loop portions may be jointly positinned at any two points within an area of predetermined width completely surrounding the vertical center line of the weight.
In combination, a reset weight for a crane l i stop, a universally adjustable cable guided device for attachment thereto, said device comprising a pair of sheet metal members of like form, means for affording a, predetermined degree of rotary adjustment of each of said sheet metal members with respect toeach other and to the vertical centerl-ine of said weight, a resilient steel cable guided member supported by each sheet metal member, each guided member comprising a portion adjustable in a straight line with respect to itsassociated sheet metal member and an end portion formed to surround a cable to be associated therewith, and associated means for clamping all of said parts in their adjusted positi'ons with respect to each other, said adjustment-s proridihg'ior positioning of said cable surrounding portions jointly at any two points within a complete annular area around the vertical center li'neof said weigh-t.
In combination, a reset weight for a crane limit stop, a universall-yadjus'table cable guided device for attachment thereto, said device comprising a pair of sheet metal members of like form. means for affording a predetermined degree of rotary adjustment of each o'fsaid sheet metal hers with respect'to each other and to the ve ical center line of said weight, a resilient steelca .e guided member supported by "each sheet metal member, each guided-member comprising a portion adjustable in a' straight line with respect to its associated sheet metal member and an end portion formed to surround a cable to be associated therewith, associatedmeans for clamping all of said parts in their adjusted positions waves latter to resist the swing of said weight, said metal means having an intermediate resilient portion adapted to bend upon initial contact of said surrounding portion with said cable as an incident with respect to each other, said adjustments providing for positioning of portions jointly at any two points within a com plete annular area around the vertical center line of said weight, and each of said cable surrounding portions being in the form of a vertically positioned open helix, whereby the same may be cooperatively assembled with respect to its associated cable without requiring unreeving of the latter.
- 12. As an article of manufacture, a universally adjustable cable guided device for attachment to a reset weight of a crane limit stop, said device comprising a pair of metal members of like form, each of said members having formed therein a circular opening to accommodate the shank of a bolt supporting the weight and an arcuate slot concentric with said opening, a headed bolt the shank of which extends upwardly through said slots when said members are in assembled position, a nut cooperating with the exposed shank to clamp said members in any adjusted positions thereof within the range afforded by said slots, means associated with said bolt head to hold the same in a substantially fixed position with respect to the weight, a resilient steel cable guided member of circular cross section carried by each of said metal members, each guided member comprising a straight portion, a pair of U-bolts for adjustably clamping said straight portion against one surface of its associated metal member, and
each guided member also comprising an end portion in the form of an open vertical helix adapted to surround a cable.
13. As an article of manufacture, a universally adjustable cable guided device -for attachment to a reset weight of a crane limit stop, said device comprising a pair of metal members of like form, each of said members having formed therein a circular opening to accommodate the shank of a bolt supporting the weight and an arcuate slot concentric with said opening, a headed bolt the shank of which extends upwardly through said slots when said members are in assembled position, a nut cooperating with the exposed shank to clamp said members in any adjusted positions thereof within the range afforded by said slots, means associated with said bolt head to hold the same in a substantially fixed position with respect to the weight, a resilient steel cable guided member of circular cross section carried by each of said metal members, each guided member comprising a straight portion, a pair of U-bolts for adjustably clamping said straight portion against one surface of its associated metal member, each guided member also comprising an end portion in the form of an open vertical helix adapted to surround a cable, and said guided members being so related to said U-bolts as to provide for assembly of the former in reversed relationship to their respective metal members, whereby said helices may be positioned jointly at any two points within a complete annular area of predetermined width.
14. In combination, a crane limit stop reset weight free to swing pendulumwise adjacent a cable, metal means having an inner end portion attached to said weight and an outer end portion surrounding said cable and engageable with the said cable surrounding" to swinging movement of said weight, when the pressure of said surrounding portion against said cable is relatively low, and to bend to a substantially greater degree without affecting the resiliency thereof as an incident to the continued swing of said weight, said resilient portion thus acting to effect an increase in the pressure on said cable at a relatively low and substantially uniform rate throughout the swing of said weight in each direction, whereby the energy stored in said swinging weight is dissipated in a manner to minimize the maximum degree of pressure of said surrounding portion upon said cable.
15. In combination, a crane limit stop reset weight free to swing pendulumwise adjacent a pair of cables, metal members respectively having inner end portions attached to said weight and outer end portions surrounding the respective cables and engageable with the latter to resist the swing of said weight, said metal members having intermediate resilient portions respectively adapted to bend upOn initial contact of said outer end portions with said cables as an incident to swinging movement of said weight, when the pressure of said surrounding portions against said cables is relatively low, and to bend to a substantially greater degree without affecting the resiliency thereof as an incident to the continued swing of said weight, said resilient portions thus acting to effect an increase in the pressure on said cables at a relatively low and substantially uniform rate throughout the swing of said weight in each direction, whereby the energy stored in said swinging weight is dissipated in a manner to minimize the maximum degree of pressure of said surrounding portions upon said cables.
16. An adjustable cable guided device for use with a reset weight of a crane limit stop, said device comprising an adjustable metal support attached to said weight, a pair of metal cable guided members carried by said support, said guided members being bendable through a relatively great distance without damage thereto, each of said guided members comprising a straight rod-like portion and an end loop portion adapted to surround a cable to be associated therewith, the straight portions of said guided members being adjustable with respect tosaid support in the direction of their respective lengths, and said metal support being adjustable with respect to said weight to provide for extension of said straight portions from said support at any one of a number of different angles with respect to the vertical axis of the associated weight, whereby said loop portions may be jointly positioned at any two points within an area of predetermined width completely surrounding said vertical axis of said weight.
17. An adjustable cable guided device for attachment to a reset weight of a crane limit stop, said device comprising a pair of supporting plates rotatively adjustable with respect to each other and to the reset weight, a steel cable guided member of substantial resiliencysupported by each plate, each of said members comprising a rodlike straight portion adjustable in a straight line with respect to its associated plate and an end portion in the form of an open helix adapted to provide for assembly thereof with respect to a cable without requiring unreeving of the latter,
