by one hand of a person for operating a rotating sharpening element and in which a pencil is held in engagement with said sharpening element by one of said telescoping parts.
A further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, efficient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which- Figure 1 is a View in top plan of the device,

Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein, for the purpose of illustration, 1 have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention,
I the numeral 5 designates a casing of substantially rectangular shape in cross section, and over the top end of which is telescopically fitted a cover 6 for the reciprocating movement of the casing into and out of the cover. I
The bottom end of the casing 5 is formed with an opening I, the walls of which are formed with an annular groove 8 rot'atably receiving the flange 9 of a conical sharpening device In having its wide end open in registry with the opening I.
Longitudinally extending openings II are formed in the cutter Ill and the interior of th cutter is formed with spiral teeth l2.

A gear I5 is secured to the cutter adjacent its smaller end operatively engaged with a gear 16 secured on a sleeve ll, the sleeve having a flange [8 adjacent one end thereof rotatably mounted in a roove 19 formed in the outer end of the casing 5. A shaft 2i) is positioned in the sleeve 11 and is formed with helical grooves 2| engaging similar ribs 22 formed on the inside of the sleeve whereby to convert the reciprocatory movement of the shaft into rotary movement of the sleeve to thus rotate the cutter it through the gears l5 and I6.
One end of the shaft 20 extends through an opening 23 in the inner end of the casing 5 for suitably attaching the shaft to the cover 6.
The top end of the cover 6 is formed with a tubular guide 24 split longitudinally, as indicated at 25, to form a plurality of resilient fingers 25 for gripping a pencil inserted therein to thus secure the pencil against rotation.
The bottom end of the casing 5 is provided with a loop 2'! adapted to receive the thumb of a person, while the cover 6 is provided with a pair of finger-engaging loops 28 to thus hold the cas- I ing 5 in one hand, and upon a movement of the casing 5 and. cover 6 inwardly and outwardly of each other in a telescoping movement, the helical ribs and grooves of the sleeve ill and shaft 26, during reciprocation of the shaft in the sleeve, will cause a rotation of the sleeve in opposite directions and thus drive the cutter ill in opposite directions. During movement of the casing 5 and cover 6 inwardly of each other, a pencil, not shown, inserted in the fingers 25 will be moved into the cutter l0 into engagement with the spiral teeth l2 and said cutter Ii) will be rotated in a direction to sharpen the pencil which will be withdrawn relative to said cutter when said casing 5 and cover 6 are moved outwardly of each other.
Shavings and waste during the cutting action are discharged from the cutter through the openings II.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even in the other member, and means connected to the cutter and operable by a movement of said members relative to each other to actuate the cutter, the first mentioned member during movement thereof feeding the pencil into the cutter 4 mounted in said second-named member operatively engaged with the cutter, and a shaft slidably mounted in the sleeve and interengaged therewith to convert the reciprocatory motion of the shaft to rotary motion of the sleeve upon a movement of said members toward and away from each other, the first mentioned member during movement thereof feeding the pencil into the cutter and withdrawing the same therefrom a1- ternatelyf.
