Description

April 6,-1948. w. w. HANLEY FULL VIEW PEEP SIGHT Filed Sept. 29, 1945 v Intel/tor W/L LIAM W HA NLEY d Attorneys Patented Apr. 6, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FULL VIEW PEEP SIGHT William W. Hanley, Wetumka, Okla.
Application September 29, 1945, Serial No. 619,327
1 Claim. 1
a flared inner portion terminating in a reduced aperture.
A still further object of my device is to provide such a sight in which the margins, hair lines and wall of the sight opening are all painted a dull black enabling the user to more readily spot his target.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a gun barrel broken away and embracing my invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof,
Figure 3 is an elevation of my improved peep sight and holder,
Figure 4 is a sectional elevation of the peep sight, and
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view thereof.
In the above drawings as well as in the specification to follow, the same characters of reference indicate the same parts throughout.
While one embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the above referred to drawings, it is to be understood that they are merely for the purpose of illustration and that various changes in construction may be resorted to in the course of manufacture in order that the invention may be utilized to the best advantage according to circumstances which may arise, without in any way departing from the spirit and intention of my device, which is to be limited only in accordance with the appended claim. And while I have stated the primary field of utility of my invention it remains obvious that it may be employed in any other capacity wherein it may be found applicable.
In the accompanying drawings I 0 indicates my invention which consists of a preferably clear plastic sight plate ll, provided with a central peep-hole l2, adapted to be aligned with the usual sight l3, provided on a gun barrel M. A countersink enlargement I5, is provided for the hole l2, the surface of which countersink is painted preferably black. The vertical hair lines 16 and I1, and the transverse hair lines [8 and 19, are in the form of grooves painted black, as best illustrated in Figure 5.
On the forward end 20, of the gun barrel is provided the usual adjustable sight holder 2|,
to the end 22, of which I secure a clip 23, the arms 3| and 32, of which have attached thereto channeled grips 24 and 25. The lower edges of the plate H, are provided with bores 21 and 28, to receive the pins 29 and 36, projecting from the arms SI and 32, through grips 24 and 25, whereby the plate is held securely in place. The said arms 31 and 32, are resilient whereby the pins may be quickly withdrawn in order to release the plate I l, and substitute another one therefor. The edges of the plate I l are also painted with a non-gloss dark paint to prevent light from entering the plate from the top and sides of the plate.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a sight with which both the vertical and horizontal line may be had upon a target practically instantly, as the black lines !6 to 19, and the black surface It, permit quick action in the use of the sight. It will also be seen that I have provided means for quickly removing the sight in order to change a plate II, to a different size sight opening l2, in hunting different characters of game.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details and parts such as come within the purview of the invention claimed may be resorted to, in actual practice, if desired.
Having now described my invention that which I claim as new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
A device as described comprising a transparent peep sight plate having a flaring peep opening with a dark wall, normally disposed horizontal and vertical darkened groove hair lines extending from the edges of said plate to said opening, dark edges on said plate, plate retainer sockets in the edges, a channelled holder for the plate, and spring actuated pins for engaging said sockets for releasably securing said plate to said holder.
