3 Claims.
This invention relates to a device adapted to cleaning drain pipes and more particularly has as an object the provision of an apparatus especially applicable in flushing out clogged drain pipes associated with sinks, laundry tubs and the like.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description and claims, the novelty consisting in the features of construction, combination of parts, the unique relations of the members and the relative proportioning, disposition and operation thereof, all as more completely outlined herein and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings which form part of the specifications:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device in position to elfect flushing of the clogged drain pipe of a sink.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view partly in section of my device in operative position; and
Figure 3 is a sectional view of the swivel attachment for the end of the lever arm of the device.
My improved device is based on a horizontal lever l inserted through an aperture of a resilient or flexible T-fltting I2 and adapted to urge at right angles thereto, an operating rod l4 connected at one end tothe T-fitting and at the other end to a flexible cup I 6, adapted to encircle the mouth of a drain I! of a sink or wash basin H3, or the l ke. Location of the T-fltting along the lever Ill serves to delineate upon the latter a longer and a shorter lever arm, #9 and 26 respectively, on opposite sides thereof.
A flexible conduit or rubber hose 2!, of conventional design, is frictionally attached to a nipple 22 disposed at one side of the flexible cup, the other end of said hose being adapted for connection to the outlet of a water faucet 24, so that the full stream of water from the faucet may be thus directed down the drain with undiminished pressure through the attached hose and cup.
The lever I0 is provided with a suitable handle 26 on its longer arm and a gripping attachment 28 at the terminal end of its shorter arm. The gripping attachment is adapted for temporary bearing on a water faucet 30, or other stationary object by reason of two angularly disposed arms 32 and 34, arranged to engage opposite faces of the horizontal portion of the faucet, the arms being provided with a surface covering 35 of rubber or other suitable non-marring material.
The engaging arms 32 and 34 are formed in- 2 tegral with a swivel 36 which is operatively mounted in the upturned end of an elbow 38 by meansof a lateral pin 40 inserted jointly along one side of a circumferential groove 42 of the swivel and through an aligned aperture of the elbow.
The elbow 38 is in turn mounted on the end of the shorter lever arm 20, so that the lever may be thus quickly attached to the faucet to provide a fulcrum for exerting downward pressure on the flexible cup [6 as shown by the broken lines of Figure 2, thereby insuring that none of the water passing through the hose 2! is permitted to enter the surrounding sink or basin l8.
In this connection, it is important to note that precise alignment of the cup It with the mouth of the drain I1, is effected by reason of the fact that both the cup l6 and the T-fltting l2 are made flexible, being conveniently formed of rubher or other suitable material.
Such construction compensates both for unevenness of the horizontal surface around the drain mouth and for difierences of the vertical distance between various faucets and their respective sinks. Also the provision of a comparatively large circumference cup [6 permits interchangeable employment of the device for sinks having various size drain openings. Likewise the operating rod l4 may be of varied length corresponding to diverse depths of sinks and laundry tubs, etc.
When the lever is tilted to press cup l6 over outlet H, the T-fitting I2 will be distorted so as to prevent said lever from moving lengthwise therethrough.
Further, as the fitting l2 and cup l6 are formed of resilient material, said lever and post Will tend to automatically adjust themselves to the fixed parts on which they bear and to the strains that press the cup against the bottom of the bowl.
While I have shown and described in some detail a presently preferred embodiment of my drain flushing device, it is to be understood that various modifications may be made in the construction and operation thereof within the scope of the subsequently claimed invention, which is to be construed broadly and limited only by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. A device for flushing drains and the like including a generally horizontally disposed lever having a pair of angularly directed engagin arms swivelly mounted at one end thereof substantlally at right angles to said lever, a flexible T-fitting having said lever inserted through an aperture thereof, a flexible cup-like member adapted to encircle the mouth of a drain, an operating rod connected at one end to said T-fitting substantially opposite to and longitudinally spaced from said engaging arms and connected at its other end to said cup-like member, and conduit means for conveying liquid under pressure to the interior of said cup-like member.
2. A clogged drain flushing device comprising a head lever, a resilient T-fitting adiustably mounted on said lever, a post detachably connected to said T-fitting, a resilient inverted cup shaped member detachably connected to the lower end of said post, and means for delivering 15 2351590 4 water under pressure to said inverted cup-shaped member.
3. A clogged drain flushing device as set forth in claim 2, with an elbow mounted on the distal I end of said lever and a V-shaped member mounted for rotation in said elbow,
