In distinction to the portions 20 and 2| of band M, the portions 24 and 25 of' band l5 are arranged to be left disconnected from each other but retained in lapping relation, and as a means of holding the band 15 within band [4 and preventing the relative rotational displacement of the bands, the bands are afiixed such as by spot welding 21 at a point of portion 2i outwardly of the end 23 of portion 20, and relative to portion 25 inwardly of the end 28 of portion 2|.
The inner portion 25 of the internal band l5 extends considerably beyond the free end of portion 24 so that while the portion 24 i movable ciroumi'erentially relative to portion 25, the former will be effectively guided between the portions 20 and 25 in case of such movement and retained in place at all times.
It will now be clear that with the bands as thus formed and designed, when the casing is mounted on the rim 9 the internal band l5 will be substantially free to expand since the only connection between it and the external band is at the welding 21. In this way any tendency toward looseness in the mounting of the prongs after the unit has been in use, will be taken up by the expansion of the band l5 under pressure from rim 9, and should the abrading prongs become loosened beyond the available compensating pressure of the rim, it will be merely necessary to draw the wheel sections more closely together and thereby provide a corresponding expansion of the band 15 with the resultant increased gripping force exerted against the heads between the bands.
It is important to note that inward circumferential movement of portion 24 is limited by portion 2!. Likewise, outward circumferential movement of portion 24 is limited since maxi mum expansion of band l5 will be attained bee fore portion 24 may be withdrawn from between portions 20 and 25. It will thus be clear that accidental release and detachment of the prongs from the unit will be effectively prevented both when the unit is mounted on.or removed from the wheel.
I claim: p
1. An abrasive wheel casing comprising an inner cylindrical band having overlapping end porthus, an outer perforated cylindrical band surrounding said inner band and having overlapping end portions with one portion opposing and in arcuate registration with one of the end portions of the inner band, headed abrasive prongs extending outwardly through said perforations and having their heads held between the bands and weld connections between both overlapping portions of the outer band and substantially between such portions and one of the overlapping portions of the other band. a
2. An abrasive wheel casing comprising a cylindrical band having inner and outer overlapping end portions, a perforated cylindrical band surrounding said first band and having overlapping inner and outer end portions with the inner portion thereof in arcuate registration with the outer of said first portions and overlying the inner portion thereof, headed abrasive prongs extending through said perforations and having- ,their heads held between the bands, and means at the overlapping portions of the second band fasten ing such portions to each other and means adjacent thereto fastening such portions to the inner portion of the first band.
3. An abrasive wheel casing comprising a per- 4 forated cylindrical band having its end portions secured in radially offset relation, a second band within said first band having inner and outer overlapping end portions the inner of which is amxed to the inwardly disposed portion of the first band adjacent the offset and the outer of which is slidably fitted between and for circumferential movement relative to the inner portion of the second hand and the outer portion of the first band, and headed prongs extending through the perforations in said band and having the heads held between the two bands.
4. An abrasive wheel casing adapted for mounting upon a resilient rim and comprising a per- Number forated band having relatively short inner and outer overlapping portions spot welded together along the free edge of the outer portion, an inner band having relatively long inner and outer overlapping portions the outer of which is in arcuate registration with the inner overlapping portion of the first band and adjustably positioned between the outer portion of the first band and the inner portion of the second band, said inner portions being fixed together by spot welding adjacent the free end of the outer portion of the first band, and headed prongs extending through the perforations in the first band with the heads held between the two bands.
5. A casing comprising an outer split band having inward and outward overlapping ends, means permanently connecting said ends together, an inner split band located within the outer band, means permanently connecting one end of said inner band to said inward overlapping end of said outer band adjacent said connecting means first named and at a point spaced inwardly from said end of said inner band whereby said end projects beyond the inward end of said outer band and due tosaid overlap, in spaced relation to the first band to form a channel, and the other end of said inner band being slidable in said channel.
6. A casing for an abrasive wheel comprising a resilient rim, an outer split band having inward and outward overlapping ends mounted on said rim, means permanently connecting said ends together, an inner split band located within the outer band, means permanently connecting one end of said inner band to said inward overlapping end of said outer band adjacent said connecting means first named and at a point spaced inwardly from said end of said inner band whereby said end projects beyond the inward end of said outer band and due to said overlap, in spaced relation to the first band to form a channel, and the other end of said inner band being slidable in said channel.
