To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEWIS Y MYERS, of Canton, in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hay- Oarriers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the acceompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of thisspecification, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 the same with one side broken away to show the slotted hook, 860. Fig. 3 is a detail.

The nature of my invention relates to that class of hay-carriers which run upon a suspended rail and are provided with alateh and stop, by which they are stopped and the fork released at any desired point; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the latch, and also in the swivel to which the hoisting-rope is secured, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which A represents a common T- rail, such as is usually used for the carrier to run upon. This rail is suspended in the barn or wherever desired, and upon it travels the frame B of the carrier, suspended by two wheels, b b, at each of its upper corners. The frame B is composed of two sides of metal, having at one of its lower corners a sheave-wheel, c, and at the other a swiveled bar, d, to which the hoistingrope e is secured, as seen in Fig. 3. The frame B is on its under side, near the center, provided with a cone-shaped guide, D, which is open at both ends, and serves to guide the forkpulley to the suspending=hook f upon the end of the latch O. The latch O is a metal bar having at one end a hook,f, and being formed at the other end with an upward projection, in which is a notch, 9, one side of this notch being longer than the other, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2. The latch is also provided with two L-shaped slots, :1: as, through which pass two "looks it open.

Upon the under side of the rail A, at the desired point of discharge, is placed a stop, 1',

The latch bar being in the position shown in Fig. 1that is, thrown forward on the pins h hand the stop iuclosed by the notch y, when the carrier starts forward the stopi will catch the rear side of the notch and draw the bar back till its point engages with the fork-pulley, when, from the peculiar shape of the slots, as seen in Fig. 2, the rear end of the bar will drop down, looking it in position, as shown. When the carrier returns the bar or latch will strike the stop t and the rear end he raised and pushed forward, releasing the fork-pulley, andthe forward end of the latch drops, in turn, upon the L- shaped slot or and By this means the latch is always held in a locked position, whether open or closed. The pivoting of the bar (1 prevents the strain of the rope e from twisting the fastening and makes it much better and stronger.

It is obvious that, if desired, the frame may be suspended upon a round iron rod by means of two grooved wheels, instead of the T- rail shown in the drawings.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In ahay-carrier, a sliding latch-bar formed with a hook upon one end, and provided with L- shaped slots, which adapt it to be locked in position whether closed or open, substantially asand for the purpose set forth.
