As best shown in Fig. 9, the wedge operated widening blocks 50, 52 are preferably connected to the wedge member 54' by cooperating tongue and groove connections 56, 58, respectively, Figs. 4 and 7, to effect outward movement of the blocks when the wedge member is moved forward, and inward movement thereof when the wedge member is moved rearwardly. The wedge member 54 is guided longitudinally in the tool by the provision of a tongue formed on the underside thereof which cooperates with a gro-ove 62 formed in the base member 46 and a groove 64 formed between contiguous portions of the side frames 40, 42.
The tool housing is relatively narrow and elongated in form and is designed to t within a chan nel or open cell I8 of the corrugated deck I0. as illustrated. The longitudinally movable wedge member 54 is arranged to be reciprocated to effect the widening operation by a lever 66 pivotally mounted on a stud 68 supported between the side frames andwhich is connected to the wedge member by links 18, 'I2 as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The lever 6B is provided with an elongated handle I4 for lmanually operatingr the tool.
From the description thus far it will be observed that when the tool is placed within an open cell I8 and the handle 14 is pulled rearwardlv the wedge member 54 is moved forward to force the wedge blocks 50 52 against the sidewalls 32. 34 to eiTect widening of a portion of the. open cell I8 and when the handle is rocked forwardly the wedge blocks are retracted to release the pressure, against the side walls. As above stated provisionis made for Supporting a fastening clip I6 in the tool in a position to permit the clip to beinserted into the widened space formed by the tool, and, as herein shown. the tool is arranged to receive a fastening clip between'arms 76 'I8 of an angularly disposed clip inserting member 80 slidingly mounted in the tool in tongue and groove connections 82. The clip inserting member supports the clip in a vertical position as shown in Figs. and 9, and is arranged to be urged downwardly to insert the clip in the widened port-ion of the channel I8 by springs 84 supported in the side frames 40, 42. As herein shown. one end of each spring 84 is supported in a threaded opening 85 provided with an adjusting screw 88. and. the other end bears against a lug 90 slidingly received in an opening provided in a block 92 secured to the tool. The lug 90 is connected to the clip inserting member 80 by a shouldered stud 94.
In order to prevent the fastening clip from being urged downwardly into the channel I8 before the widening operation has commenced. an extension 95 from the under side of the inserting member 80 is arranged to engage a stop 98 carried in the longitudinally movable wedge frember 54, as shown in Fig. 5. Inpractice the operator slides the inserting member upwardly against the action of the springs 84 by `means of a finger grip |00 and then places a fastening clip between the arms "I8, 'I8 thereof. 'Ihe inserting member is then released to come to rest against the st op member 98, Thereafter, when the tool is operated to move the wedge 54 forwardly to effect widening of the open cell I8, the stop member carried by the wedge is movedv forwardly as shownin Fig. 8 to permit the springs 84 to push the inserting member downwardly and place the clip between the sides of the widened portion of the cell. On the return stroke, the stop member 98 again engages the extension 96 to lift the inserting member up to its original position, It will be observed that on the return stroke the pressure of the wedge blocks 50, 52 is released to permit the side walls 32, 34 to grip the fastening clip I6 before the stop member 98 effects raising of the inserting member thus preventing displacement of the clip from the cell during retraction of the inserting member.
In order to prevent displacement of the tool in the channel I8 during the widening operation, a second pair of laterally movable wedge operated blocks |02, |04 are provided which are arranged to engage the upper edges of the side walls 32, 34 as shown'in Fig. 11. The blocks |02, |04 are connected to an upper wedge shaped portion |08 of the longitudinally movable wedge 54 and are operated simultaneously with the cell widening blocks 52, 53 to exert a grip between opposed edges of the cell during the widening operation to assure centering of the tool in the channel and to prevent tipping or longitudinal displacement of the tool therein during the widening operation.
From the above description, it will be observedl that in operation, the tool provided with a fastening clip I8 is placed in an open cell I8 and moved forwardly to present the clip adjacent the edge of a sheet of insulation I4 or other sheet to be at- Y tached to the corrugated metal section, as shown blocks are caused to assume a substantially Verti` cal and parallel position at which time the clip drops down into the cell. As illustrated in Figs. 8 and 10, the clip is permitted to drop down into the cell until it rests against the top surface of the wedge blocks 50, 52 and, upon release of the expanding pressure, the base portion 22 of the clip is firmly gripped between the side walls 32, 34 of the cell as the walls tend to return to their original position, Thereafter, the tool is pulled out from under the clip and removed and, in the erection of the roof structure a second sheet of insulation is erected in contiguous relation to the rst sheet so that the upper portions of the c'ip extend between adjacent sheets. In practice, and, as herein illustrated, the fastening clips I0 may be provided with cooperating wire mesh pieces |08 bent around the underside of the laterally extended- portions 28, 30 of the clip and positioned to extend over the upper surfaces of adjacent insulating sheets. A protective covering embodying a waterproofing adhesive |I0 and roong paper II2 may then be applied to the upper surfaces of the insulating sheets I4, the wire mesh becoming embedded in the waterproofing adhesive and cooperating with the fas,
an open cell of the corrugated metal sheet, means carried by said housing for supporting a fastening member, a, pair of laterally movable blocks supported in said housing, means for spreading said blocks apart into engagement with opposed side walls of said open cell to elfect widening of the latter to permit reception of said fastening member, said fastener supporting means having provision for automatically depositing a fastener into the widened portion of said cell.
2. A tool for inserting a fastening member in a corrugated metal building sheet comprising a housing adapted to be placed within and moved longitudinally of an open cell of the corrugated metal sheet, a pair of laterally movable blocks mounted in said housing, means for moving said blocks into engagement with opposed side walls of said open cell to effect widening of the latter for the reception of a fastening member, and a second pair of laterally movable blocks spaced from said first pair and arranged to bear against opposed side walls of said cell for preventing displacement of the housing in the cell during operation of the tool, and means for automatically depositing a fastener in the widened portion of the corrugation.
3. A tool for inserting a, fastening member in a corrugated metal building sheet comprising a housing adapted to be placed Within and moved 4 longitudinally of an open cell of the corrugated metal sheet, a pair of laterally movable blocks mounted in said housing, means for moving said blocks into engagement with opposed side walls of said open cell to effect widening of the latter for the reception of a fastening member, means carried by the housing operative to engage the side walls of said cell for preventing displacement of the housing in the cell during operation of the tool, and means for automatically depositing a fastener in the widened portion of the cell.
4. A tool for inserting a fastening member in a corrugated metal building sheet comprising a housing adapted to be placed within an open cell of the corrugated metal sheet, yieldingly mounted means for holding a fastening member arranged to urge the same downwardly into the open cell, a pair of pressure applying members mounted in said housing for engaging opposed side walls of said open cell to widen the latter and means for actuating said pressure applying members to effect widening of said cell to permit said fastening member to be inserted therein by said yieldingly mounted holding means.

A tool as claimed in claim 4 having a stop member carried by said actuating means arranged to retain said yieldingly mounted holding means in an upward position when said actuating means is retracted and to release said holding means upon movement of said actuating means to effect the widening operation.

A tool for inserting a fastening member between the upwardly diverging side walls of one of the corrugations of a corrugated metal sheet comprising a housing adapted to be placed between the side walls of said corrugation, a yieldingly mounted slide member carried by said housing and arranged to hold a fastening member in operative position to be* received between said side walls, a pair of laterally movable wedge blocks mounted in said housing, a longitudinally movable wedge arranged to move said blocks against opposed side walls to effect widening of a portion of said corrugation to permit said fastening member to drop into said widened portion, said fastening member becoming anchored between said side walls upon release of said widening pressure and removal of the tool.
7. A tool for inserting a fastening clip within a corruption of a corrugated metal sheet, comprising a body portion adapted to fit into the corrugation, an operating member, means actuated upon movement of the operating member in one direction for engaging the walls of and effecting widening of the corrugation and for disengaging said walls when the operating member is retracted and means for depositing a clip in said widened portion, whereby to enable the clip to be clamped between the walls of the corrugation when the operating member is retracted.
