1 Claim. (Cl. 2354-102) This invention relates to typewriting machines -andhas for. an object to provide means whereby words written thereon may be automatically counted as they are written.
Another--obiect of the invention is to provide a word counter for typewriters which automatically sets itself for operation.
A further object of the invention is toprovide ina word-counting mechanism for typewriters means whereby no incomplete words or spacing can be counted as finished words.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a typewriter frame embracing my invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof,
Figure 3 is an elevational view illustrating certain elements of my device,
Figure 4 is a similar view showing the elements in changed position,
Figure 5 is a. detail elevation of a control memher, and
Figure 6 is another detail.
In the accompanying drawings as above enumerated and in the following specification, like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout and in which i0, indicates a typewriter frame connected to which by means of mountings II and I2, is my actuating mechanism i3, whereby the counter 5|, is operated. My invention comprises the aforesaid mountings upon which are secured upright bearing members l5 and I6, by screws l'l. Rotatably supported by hearing members i8'and I9, is a shaft 20, upon the terminals 2| and 22, of which are mounted the inner ends 23 and 24, of the supporting arms 25, of the typewriter spacer bar 28.
Pivotally mounted upon hearing I5, is a stub shaft 21, to the inner end 28, of which is fixed one arm 29, of a cross bar 30, the other arm 3| c! which is pivoted upon the bearing member IS. The members 23. 30 and 3|, are normally held in raised position under and in contact with the type levers 32, by means of a spring 33, wound around the bolt 21, and having one terminal turned under bar 3i, and the other terminal bent around member i8.
Mounted to swing freely upon the arm 29, by a pin 34, is a hook link 35, the hook end 38, of which is adapted to engage pin 31, on the arm 25, of said spacer bar 28, whereby the member 36, will engage pin 31, through the pulling action of a spring 33, coiled upon and fixed at one end to aglink; iod.-39,- and a jects.
a perforated bracket,
throughewhich the. terminal 4 i r of the bar 'pro- (see- Figure s.) Y
Also fixedlymounted'upon shaft 21, isasheet -metal lever-542, having-a-twisted terminal 43, "through: a -bore' r-in -which a vertical rod 44, slidably-- passes. The? end 45, of the rod ls-screw threaded to receive :the adjustment nut 46, which limits {the up movementiof thesaid rod. To the upper end 41, of rod 44, is fixed the arm 48, of a bell crank 49, the other arm 50, of which connects with and is adapted to actuate a counter 5|. A spring 52, connected at one end to the base 53, and to the terminal 54, of arm 50, retracts said arm to normal position after each action thereupon by lever 42. The bell crank is mounted upon a pin 55, on the frame of the typewriter. I
Fixedly mounted upon the shaft 20, is a lever 35. the upper end 51, of which is twisted to receive the rear end 53, of rod 39.
The action of my word counter is as follows: Upon first pressing down of any one of the key levers 32, member 30, will be pressed down therewith together with its arm 35, lowering link 35, which, being pulled rearwardly by spring 38, will cause the hook 36, thereof to engage pin 31, on spacer bar 25, thus holding member 30, out of contact with all of the key levers 32, until after a complete word has been written, whereupon the spacer bar 25, is pressed down, taking with it link 35, and arm 29, which rotates shaft 21, actuating lever 42, drawing down rod 44, which actuates bell crank 49, to operate the counter 5|, thus numbering the word just written.
At the same time the spacer bar 26, is pressed down to space andcount a word the lever 56, fixed to shaft 20, rotated by the arms 25, pushes forward rod 39, its end 4l, sliding through member 40, against the tension of spring 38, shoves against the actuating member 59, projecting from link 35, into the path of said rod end 4|, and swings that member out of contact with pin 31, and allows member 30, to again be raised by spring 33. Now pressing down upon the spacer bar 26, any number of times will have no effect upon the counter operating mechanism, however when the first key bar is pressed down the mechanism is again set for operation. From the foregoing it is obvious that only each word actually written and completed can be regis tered on the counting machine.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after 3 considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a. more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Minor changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details and parts such as come within the purview of the invention claimed may be resorted to, in actual practice, if desired.
Having now described my invention that which I claim as new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is: V
In combination with a typewriter and a word counter therefor including a pair of transversely spaced bearing members, a shaft rotatably mounted therebetween, forwardly extending spacer bar supporting arms fixed to the ends of said shaft, a spacer bar connectedbetween the forward ends of said arms, transversely spaced upright bearing members disposed exteriorly of said transversely spaced bearing members, a stub shaft rotatably supported on one of said upright bearing members, a bail member including a transversely extending bar and rearwardly and angularly extending supporting arms pivotally supported on one of said upright members and -on said stub shaft, a plurality of key levers engaging the transversely extending bar of said bail member, a pin on the side of one of said 'spacer bar supporting arms, a. depending hook link pivotally supported by one of said bail bar 4 supporting arms, levers secured to said rotatable shaft and said stub shaft having apertured ends extending at an angle to each other, a word counter, means for connecting the operating means of the counter with the lever on said stub shaft, 9, link rod connected with the lever connected with said rotatable shaft having a resilient connection with said depending hook link, and a resilient tensioning means between the bail supporting arm and its supporting upright bearing member whereby operation of a type bar will lower the hook link to engage the pin on the spacer bar and operation of the spacer bar will move the hook link a greater amount to operate the counter before the hook is released by the link rod connected between the lever on the rotatable shaft and the hook link.
