This invention relates to sewing machines, and more particularly to sewing machines of the household or domestic type.
It is a general object of the present invention to provide a novel and improved household sewing machine.
More particularly it is an object of the invention to provide in a household type sewing machine improvements in the construction and arrangement of the essential parts and drives whichoontribute to simplicity of manufacture and maintenance and materially reduce the noise of operation.
Among the important objects oi the invention is the arrangement of the stitch adjusting mechanism for drives by a constant velocity vertical -shaft whereby simplification of the manual a'dadjustment and yet is easily protected against injury to the operator or to curious children who might investigate the machine while in use.
Other and further objects and features of the invention will be more apparent to those skilled in the art upon a consideration of the accompanying drawings and following speciiication, wherein is disclosed a single exemplary embodiment of the invention, with the understanding that such changes may be made therein as fall within the scope of the appended claims withi' out departing from the spirit of the invention.

Sewing machines at present on the market for the household trade, while reasonably satisfactory in operation, are costly and inclined to be noisy. They have certain undesirable operating characteristics and it is the intention of the present invention to so simplify the construction of such machines as to reduce the amount of machine work in the manufacture of the same, and so assemble the parts that they are readily available when there is need for lubrication or adjustment and to eliminate many sources of noise whereby the objectionable clatter of the usual machine is materially reduced.
Referring nowto the drawings, it Vwill be seen that in general outline the sewing machine of the present invention conforms to the conventional. It is provided with a suitable bed plate I0 which may be a casting provided with legs I2 and flanges I3 for standing and-reinforcing the same. The usual standard I5 extends upwardly from the right end of the bed plate and has formed integrally therewith the arm I6 supporting the head I8. This head is equipped with the usual needle bar 20 and other conventional parts, such as thread takeup, presser foot and the like, which form no part of the present invention.
The stitch forming mechanism, not shown in detail, includes a rotary hook or shuttle mechanism 22 adapted to be rotated by a supporting vertical shaft 24 carried and J'ournalled in a bracket 26 suitably secured to the lower surface of the bed plate. It will be noted that the left hand side of the shuttle mechanism is in alignment with the needle whereby the whole of the bobbin carrying portion is available from the right hand side of the needle through a suitable assembly cover, not shown, which permits the operator to remove and replace the bobbin entirely with the right hand. This is a much more favorable arrangement than the conventional machines which require left hand operation and have the shuttle and bobbin so arranged they are not readily visible.
In keeping with conventional sewing machines, the present one is equipped with a main or drive shaft 30 extending through the standard, the arm and into the head, at which hea'd end it is equipped with the necessary mechanism for drivthe'parallel position the phase of the oscilla- 'tion of the feed shaft can be adjusted in respect `tothe needle bar so that forward or backward stitching can be accomplished. rIhe length of the stitch in either direction is adjusted by positioning the fulcrurn 93 more or less in angular relatio'nship to the said parallel line.
l To control and limit the path of the fulcrum or pivot 93 it is carried by the free end of a link '96 in which it is mounted. The opposite end of the link isfixed by means of a suitable pivot L91 in the lug 42 on the bracket for shaft 32. It will be seen that all of the connections and piv- Iots are of the tapered variety and arranged for adjustment to compensate for wear. The posi- `tion of the pivot 9'! is not greatly displaced from that of pivot 92 and the links 90 and 96 are of similar length, which will limit the movement of the fulcrum 93 to an arc whose center is substantially in the path of movement of pivot 92.
To accurately position and hold the fulcrum 93 for determining the length of stitch, it is provided with a pin extending from its upper end, las clearly seen in Figs. 1 and 3, which is received in a slot 98 in the inner end of a lever 99. This lever is pivoted intermediate its ends at It() on an extension of lug e2. The outer or forward end IDI of the lever extends through a slot |02 in the forward face of the standard I5 and the pointed 'end sweeps over the surface of the bed plate, which may be suitably graduated to indicate stitch length and direction. The portion 99 of the lever is curved as shown, in order to clear intermediate parts when the whole thing is moved to the dotted line position shown for link 99. The fulcrum Illl for the operating lever is arranged to frictionally hold the same in any position to which it may be set.
I claim:
1. In a household type sewing machine, in combination, a bed plate, a standard thereon, an arm extending from the standard and supporting a head, a rotary main shaft extending through the standard and arm and into the head, a vertical shaft journalled for rotation in the standard, one-to-one ratio gears driving the vertical from the main shaft, a shuttle shaft journalled for rotation about a vertical axis beneath the bed plate, a crank on the vertical shaft beneath the bed plate, a crank on the shuttle shaft, a slide on one of said cranks, a connecting rod pivoted to one of the cranks and to said slide, an intermediate guide fulcrum for said rod, and means pivoting said guide beneath said bed plate.
2. In a household type sewing machine, in combination, a bed plate, a standard thereon, an arm extending from the standard and supporting a head, a rotary main shaft extending through the standard and arm and into the head, a vertical shaft journalled for rotation in the standard, one-to-one ratio gears driving the vertical from the main shaft, a shuttle shaft journalled for rotation about a vertical axis beneath the bed plate, a crank on the vertical shaft beneath the bed plate, a crank on the shuttlev shaft, a slide on one of said cranks, a connecting rod pivoted to one of the cranks and to said slide, an intermediate guide fulcrum for said rod, means pivoting said guide beneath said bed plate, the sides of said connecting rod converging, the walls of said guide having a corresponding taper and means to vertically adjust the guide to compensate for wear.

In a sewing machine, in combination, a bed plate, a standard thereon, a rotary vertical shaft extending within the standard and through the bed plate, a feed shaftpivoted for oscillation beneath the bed'plate and spaced from the vertical shaft, an arm extending from saidfeed shaft and oscillatable therewith about a vertical position, a cam on the vertical shaft beneath the bed plate, a connecting roduniversally pivoted to said arm, the opposite end of said connecting rod being enlarged to provide opposed followers adapted to engage the cam, said followers ex.- tending substantially parallel to the axis of the connecting rod, a restraining link for said connecting rod, a pivot attaching said link to the connecting rod nearV said followers, a floating pivot for the other 'endfo'fvv said'link and means to restrain said floating pivotfor movement in an arc having its center adjacent the path of said first pivot.
4. In a sewing machine, in combination, a bed plate, a standard thereon, a rotary vertical shaft extending within lthe standard and through the bed plate, .a feed shaft pivotedV for oscillation beneath the bed plate and spaced from the vertical shaft, an arm extending from said feed shaft and oscillatable therewith about a vertical position, a cam on ther-Vertical shaft beneath the bed plate, a connecting rod universallypivoted to said arm, the opposite end of said connecting rod being enlarged to provide opposed followers adapted to engage the cam, said followers ex-k tending substantially parallel to the axis of the connecting rod, a restraining link for said connecting rod, a pivot'attaching said link to the connecting rod near said followers, a floating pivot for the other end of said link, a second link having one end pivoted to the said floating pivot and the other end pivoted to a xed point which is substantially intersected by the path of a projection of the first pivot.
5. In a sewing machine, in combination, a bed plate, a standard thereon, a rotary vertical shaft extending within the standard and through the bed plate, a feed shaft pivoted for oscillation beneath the bed plate and spaced from the vertical shaft, an arm extending from said feed shaft and oscillatable therewith about a vertical position, a cam on the vertical shaft beneath the bed plate, a connecting rod universally pivoted to said arm, the opposite end of said connecting rod being en larged to,provide opposed followers adapted to engage the cam, said followers extending substantially parallel to the axis of the connecting rod, a restraining link for said connecting rod, a pivot attaching said link to the connecting rod near said followers, a floating pivot for the other end of said link, a second link having one end pivoted to the said floating pivot and the other end pivoted to a fixed point which is substantially intersected by the path of a projection of the first pivot, an operating lever extending through the front wall of said standard above the bed plate, said lever having anrintermediate pivot within said standard, and means connecting the inner end of said lever to said fioating pivot for posi.- tioning the same to regulate the stroke of said connecting rod and hence of said feed shaft.
