Description

(No Mt uleL) R. E. TURNBULL.
. Toy Bank.
Patented June 28, I881...
' Toallwhom it may concern: I
'd UNITED STATES ROBERT E. TURNBULL, OF NEW BRITAIN, connucricurr, ASSIGNOR TO THE PATENT OF ICE.
MECHANICAL NOVELTY WORKS, OF SAME PLACE.
,TOY BANK.
SPECIFICATION- forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,475, dated June 28, mar.
Application filed February 9, 1881. (No model.)
Be it known that I, ROBERT E. TURNBULL,
of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and'useful Improvements in Toy Bank's,
. of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in toy banks,in which an oscillating figure of a squirrel or other image is mounted upon a box or base,
end of which is .beveled and inclines toward the mouth; and the objects of my improvements are to make an attractive toy'at a mod- I shown.
circle described by the temporary coin-holder crate cost, and to insure the proper. deposition .of the coin in the receptacle. l attain. these. objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line a; a: of Fig. 1.
A designates the figure of a squirrel sittin gin an upright position and oscillatingon the pin a. An arm, b, is rigidly connected to the figure A and'extends through a slot, 0, down into the interior-of the base B, as shown inFig. 2. A- spring, d, within the base B is secured at one end to the arm I) and at its opposite end to the base B, so as to pull the arm b against that end of the slots which acts as a stop and holds the figure A in an upright position. A rod provided'with a suitable operating-handle, 0,
extends from the .arm 11 to the outside" of the base B. The figure A is provided with an open slot, preferably to represent its mouth, and
which formsatemporary coin-holder, e. At
' the opposite end of the. base thereisa coin-receptacle, D, which is in imitation of arustic stump, the upper end of which is'inclincd, as
formed'in the'inclined upper end of the stamp or upright, and practically in the arc of the The mouth hof'the' receptacle Dis e. A slight rim is formed upon the sides of the month which do not confront the'main iucline, so th'a t a hopper is formed all around the mouth to insure the coin being depositedin the receptacle, or at least to catch the coin and prevent it from falling, away from the bank in case that by any possibility it does not enter "the mouth 'h. 1
The operation is quite simple. A coin is placed in the temporary coin-holder, when the handle is manipulated by giving it a sharp pull to force the figure against the power of the spring, which will bow'the figure A forward over'the mouth It, and the coin will fall intothe receptacle. The spring returns the parts to their normal position.
If desired, instead of arranging the ope'rat-.
ing-handle for pulling, a portion or wing might extend forward from the arm I) and form a part of said arm, and have an upright handle pi\'-. oted thereto and extending upward through the base, as indicated by broken lines in Fig. 2, in which case the handle would be depressed quickly to throw the figure A forward.
I claimas my invention- L The combination of the receptacle having'amouth, h, to receive the coin, the figure of a squirrel or other animal vpivoted to oscillate upon the ,base B, and having the temporary coin-holder e, the spring d, arm 1), slot 0, andoperating-handletomove the figure against the force of the spring todischarge the coin,
substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. The receptacle B, having thestuzmp-like projection or upright and inclined upper end,
at the foot of which is the mouth h, in combination with afigure having the tcmporarycoinholder, and operating to deposit-a coin in or near the mouth h, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
