Description

1948. H. E. PETERSON PERFORATOR FOR PRINTING PRESSES Filed May 16, 1946 INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY.
Patented Jan. 13, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE This invention relates to perforating mechanisms, for printing presses, and has special reference to such a device for cylinder presses, the principal object being to produce a practical, simple, and readily adjustable means for such purpose.
Another object is to provide such a device whereby the perforating process is accomplished at the time the Work is passing through the press, thus avoiding the necessity of subsequent action to accomplish same.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description thereof.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this application, and wherein like reference characters indicate like parts:
Figure 1 is a fragmental perspective of the cylinder of an ordinary printing press showing one embodiment of the invention as applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a similar perspective view, somewhat reduced, of the power supplying mechanism for the perforating device at one end of the cylinder of the press.
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical central section through the perforating disc.
i represents the cylinder of the press, such as is found upon what is known in the trade as a Miehle cylinder press, and 2 is the driving gear or pinion at one end of the cylinder, and 3 is what is known as the intertape sleeve gear, and it is from this gear that I have shown this embodiment of my invention as being intermittently operated.
At t is illustrated a portion of the press frame extending outwardly from the main portion thereof, and there is a similar extension at the opposite end of the cylinder of the press and it is upon these extensions that the perforating frame mechanism is pivotally supported; one of the readily adjustable holding bolts of such attachment being illustrated at 5 so that the perforating frame may be tipped forwardly for the operating gears thereof to engage the constantly rotating sleeve gear 3 or swung therefrom when the perforating device is not in operation.
The perforator frame comprises the end bracket 6, of which there are two though only one is shown, and th upper ends of which are united as by the frame bar I, and below which, within the frame, are mounted the two shafts ii and 9, disposed parallel with and above the cylinder I of the press, the shaft 8 being for the support of the perforating arm iii, and the shaft 9 being for the driving of the perforating mechanism which will be described later.
. the shaft [4 in transmitting power to the shaft 9,
' and which includes the set of beveled gears I5 keyed to the protruding end of the shaft 9, and the gear IE on the shaft [4 at the upper end thereof, while a similar pair of bevel gears l1 and 18 are carried at the lower extremity of this portion of the perforator frame. The bevel gear l8 has fixed thereto the spur gear l9 which is for selective engagement with the sleeve gear 3 of the press, though obviously this power transmitting arrangement of gears or otherdevices may differ materially from that shown without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
As previously stated the perforator arm I0 is carried upon the rockable shaft 8 and is adjustable longitudinally thereupon to any position desired as by manipulating of the clamping bolt 5, and the shaft 8 is made rockable so that the perforating disc may be readily adjusted to accommodate the requirements of the Work being done. For automatically throwing the perforating disc in or out of action, I have provided at the opposite end of the cylinder I to that just described as the power end, means for accomplishing same which embodies the rocker arm 2 l, keyed to the shaft 8, and extending somewhat beyond the end of the cylinder. This rocker arm 2!, carries the roller 22 upon the free end thereof, which roller is operable up and down as by engagement with the gauge block 23, adjustably held within the holding member embodying the bracket like frame 24 and the clamp 25. It will be understood that this holding member is of accentric construction in respect to the cylinder 1 for the reason that the cylinder in this type of printing press is intermittently raised and lowered during the printing process, therefore the necessity of the holding member just described being of eccentric construction in relation to the end of the cylinder and adjustably mounted thereupon ily adjustable as by wing nuts indicated at 21. Thus it is readily seen that the perforating disc indicated at 28 is readily automatically controlled.
The perforating wheel may be of any desired type, though I have illustrated same as being of two like halves 28 29, mounted upon the sleeve hub 30 of the sheave 3| and having clamped therebetweenthe toothed disc 32 which performs the perforating act. The sheave? isirdtatably carried upon the pin 33, mounted within the bifurcated ends of the arm I0, it being screw threaded into the outermost one, as at 34, or" otherwise attached as desired," thus providing it simple and convenient journal forthe perforating disc. The sheave is operatedasby ab'elt"35" passing therearound at one endand around the' shaft 9 at the opposite end for simultaneously rotating the perforating disc with the rotatio'ifof the shaft 9 and preferably at the same speed as the cylinder.
This arrangement of perforating disc con junction with the cylinder isfurthe'rnovel'iri that thereis' disposed intermediate of the disc and thecylinder a slotted shield plate36; adjustablysup portedin any desired manner as'at 31 upon the cross member 38 of the printing" pressstructure so" that it may be" a'd'j usted'longitudinally' of the cylinder when the perforatingdisc support ised justed; This' shield obviously prevents the te eth of" the disc harmfully'injuring the make ready' surface of the cylinder, and furthermore" insures adequate perforation of the perforating teeth through the sheet being printd;'as' received from thdfeedboa'rd 39. I
Having thus described invention, virl'iaii I claim'anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a cylinder printing press having a feed table, two parallel shafts spaced above the cylinder of said press, parallel therewith and spaced forwardly of the forward edge of said table, means for rotating one of said shafts coincident with the rotation of said cylinder, a perforating disc supported by the other of said shafts, adjustable longitudinally thereof and extending towards the forward edge of said feed table, meansfor rotatir'i'gf di'sc iro in said rgitativef sl'iaft, and an apertured foot plate for cooperative engagement with said disc and adjustable longitudinally of said cylinder.
4 2. A'sheet-perforating device for cylinder printing presses comprising in combination two parallei'sh'a'ft's mounted above said cylinder parallel therewith: and spaced therefrom, one of said shafts being rotatable, a perforating disc pivotally's'iipported by the other of said shafts above the cylinder of said press, means for rotating said dis'c from'sa'id rotatable sha'ft at'a predetermined speed inrelation t'o'the motion'ofthe said press and simultaneouslytherewith, an apertured plate between said dis'c and said cylinder to insure against displacement o'f' a' sheet beingperforated; and means for selectively setting the perforating" device for intermittent operation.
