DIE FOR TRIMMING AND CUTTING OFF PlCKER-TEETH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,423, dated June 28, 1881.

T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT ALDRICH, of Millville, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies for Trimming and Cutting OE Picker-Teeth and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to a die designed for use in my machine for the manufacture of picker-teeth patented July 3, 187 7 numbered 192,669. It is used under the punch, and receives the picker-teeth as they are fed from the formers, and cuts and trims them preparatory for their finish by rattling. In practice the die heretofore used for this purpose is expensive and impractical. The teeth are fed from the formers and taken under the punch over the die by a forward movement of the stock-head of the machine, and with the die heretofore used it often happens that a tooth will stick in the die, and sometimes it will slip to one side or the other, thereby spoiling the tooth, and quite liable to break some portion of the machine; and when the cutting edges are worn dull or nicked it has to be taken out and replaced by a new one entire.
To overcome these defects is the object of my invention; and it consists in having a bedpiece provided with two adjustable point-trimmers and an adjustable heel-cutter. The slot in the bed-piece which forms the rear portion of the die extends under the pointers the same width from end to end, which allows the teeth to drop free and clear from the trimmers. The cutting-edges of the point-trimmers are depressed on an incline toward the point, which forms a groove. The heel-cutter is set in a transverse dovetail groove to hold it in place, and also in which it can be adjusted by moving it from right to left and filing a corresponding groove in the cutter. This groove is simply a continuation of the one in that end of the bed-piece, and serves only to guide the point of the tooth under the punch, which is raised just high enough to allow the tooth to be carried in over the die.

The advantages in having the trimmers and heel-cutter adjustable are, first,'when the edges become nicked or dull they can be taken out and put in order and replaced as often as they are impaired until they are worn out, when they can be replaced with new ones at much less expense than to make an entire new die, as heretofore; second, by having the trimmers faced in thebed-piece and adjustable in this form there is space beneath for the tooth to drop and not stick in the die; third, the depressed edges serve as a groove to keep the tooth in its place under the punch as it is fed from the formers.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The picker-tooth die consisting of a bedpiece, A, provided with point-trimmers B B, having depressed inclined cutting-edges a a, adjusted over slot I) by means of screws 1) b and c c, heel-cutter G, and groove d, substantially as and for the purposes herein shown and described.
