Description

Dec; 30, 1947. w. GlBARR I 2,433,590
GOLFERS EYESHIELD Filed Jan. 2, 1947 Inventor William 6. Barr Patented Dec. 30, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GOLFERS EYESHIELD William G. Barr, Chicago, Ill.
Application January 2, 1947, Serial No. 719,839 2 Claims. (or. 2-12) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in eye shields and more particularly to an eye shield adapted for use by golfers.
The primary feature of this invention is to provide a device of the character described that is adapted to aid visually the golf player and also to facilitate the practice of correct habits for the golf player.
Another important feature of this invention is to provide a device of this character that is collapsible thereby permitting the device to be conveniently carried in the pocket of the player when not in use.
A further important feature of this invention is to provide a device of the character referred to which will be devoid of straps or bands designed to encircle the head and will not be supported by the forehead of the wearer but upon the bridge of the nose as in an ordinary pair of eye-glasses.
A still further important feature of the invention is to provide a device of the class described that is neat and attractive in appearance, efficient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended. 9
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the eye-shield embodying the present invention in applied position;
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the de- V108;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the eye-shield in a collapsed position.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 represents the main shield consisting of a thin strip of shielding material of a suitable type, provided with a pair of substantially U- shaped brackets 6 having out-turned flanges 6a suitably secured to the lower face of said shield 5.
The brackets 6 are adapted to receive the upper curved edge of a nose frame 1 having the usual pair of rearwardly extending temples 8 and 8a hingedly connected at 9 to said nose frame,
said temples adapted to fit over the wearers ears as shown in Figure 1,
One edge Illa of a side shield I0 is hingedly connected by conventional means at H such as a gummed flexible tape to one of the side edges l 2 of the main shield.
A slot I3 is provided in the rear upwardly curved edge I4 and adapted to receive the forward portion of the temple 8 as shown in Figure 3, thereby permitting shield [0 to be lowered against the side of the wearers check in a normally worn position. a
To collapse the device for shipment or for conveniently carrying the same, the side shield I9 is swung upwardly so the outer face of said shield H] rests on the upper face of the main shield 5.
The nose frame I is swung forwardly and rests against the lower face of shield 5 and the temples 8 and 8a are swung inwardly to bear against the nose frame as shown in Figure 4.
The rear edge of the main shield is provided with a curvature [5 so that said rear edge of shield 5 rests against the forehead of the wearer in a normally worn position.
The device is designed primarily for use by golfers and is constructed so that the side shield I0 will be positioned at the side of the left eye (for right hand golfers) to induce the player to keep his head down when striking the ball by shielding the line of flight of the ball.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In combination with a nose-piece equipped with laterally extending members, temples hingedly connected to said laterally extending members, a main shield having its rear edge curved inwardly to rest against the forehead of a wearer, a pair of substantially U-shaped brackets carried by the lower face of said main shield and pivotally connecting the laterally extending members to the main shield, a side shield, and a resilient tape fixedly carried by the upper edge of said side shield and secured to one side edge of said main shield, said side shield having a WIL IAM BARR.
