DOOR HANDLE Filed Dec. 8, 1945 a/ MM.
5 wm n TJ m mko wd Mw l/ A m @wf/ Patented Dec. 23, 1947y Gerald V. J akeway, Grand Rapids, Mich., assignor to Keeler Brass Company, Grand Rapids, Mich., acorporation of Michigan Application December 8, 1945, Serial No. 633,645
' 10 Claims.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a door handle for automobile doors, refrigerators and the'like in which an outward pull upon the handle serves to release the bolt.
Second, to provide a handle assembly of this character which may be easily mounted on the door, the mounting means being concealed within a chamber in the door.
Third,v to provide a structure of this character c which is very simple in its parts and at the same time attractive in appearance and strong and durable.`
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A perferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in
which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view partially in section on a line corresponding to line I-I of Fig. 2 showing a door handle embodying my invention applied to a door.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in transverse sec tion on a line corresponding to line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary inside View of the handle removed from its supporting plate and associa,- tion with the bolt releasing lever.
In the accompanying drawing, I represents a door of an automobile, refrigerator or 'the like having a chamber 2 therein and provided with an outer panel 3. The door frame or casing 4 is shown conventionally and is provided with a keeper 5 for the bolt 6. On the inner side of the panel is a supporting plate and panel reinforce member I having inturned arms 8, only one of which is illustrated.
The bolt B is pivotally mounted at 9 on the bolt lever I0 which is pivoted at II on the supporting brackets I2 secured to the inner sides of the supporting plate l. These brackets are provided with supporting rollers I3 by which the bolt is slidably supported.
The escutcheon designated generally by the numeral I4 comprises a shell I5 provided with an ornamental casing I6. The escutcheon comprises a back plate Il having embossed portions I8 internally threaded to receive the attaching screws I9 which are arranged through the arms V8, the inner edge of the door being provided with openings aiording access to these screws.
The bracket or handle vsupporting stirrup 2U is provided with out-turned flanges 2l lapped upon and welded to the escutcheon back plate II. This bracket or stirrup extends through the opening 22 in the supporting plate, depending between the brackets I2, thus pivotally supporting the handle.
The handle comprises the handle bar 23 having an inturned inner end, the casing 24 being mounted on the handle bar and suitably shaped, theinner end of the casing projecting into the escutcheon. The projecting end of the handle bar is spot welded at 25 to the trip member 26 which Vis bifurcated to receive the yhandle bar, this trip' member being mounted on the pivot 21 carried by the escutcheon bracket or stirrup i0.
The trip member is formed of sheet metal and has a connecting cross member 28 in its 'outer end engaging the bolt release lever as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
A coiled spring 29 is arranged on the pivot 21 and has projecting ends 30 and 3l, the projecting end 30 engaging the inner end of the handle bar while the projecting end 3| engages the escutcheon bracket or stirrup 20. Thus arranged the spring acts to return the handle to its initial position and the spring is effectively supported so that it cannot become displaced.
The trip member is provided with stop lugs 32 which engage the escutcheon back plate as shown in Fig. 1 thus limiting the inward movement of the handle.
With the parts thus arranged an outward pull on the handle retracts the bolt and also serves to open the door after the bolt is retracted. A push on the handle will close the door, the force on the handle being sustained by the stop on the trip member.
I have not illustrated the means for projecting the bolt, spring means being commonly provided.
I have illustrated and described my` improvements in a practical commercial embodiment thereof. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe other embodiments or adaptations as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
