2 Claims.
The object of this inventionis to kdevise a' novel motor pump unit which can be connected directl'y in a pipe line, which can be economically manufactured with a minimum of parts, which is quiet in operation, and which will operate for a long period of time without attention.
A further object of the invention is to devise novel iiexible mechanism for connecting the motor housing with the pump housing.
A further object of the invention is to ldevise nove1 mechanism for connecting the motor shaft with the impeller. y
It further comprehends a novel construction and arrangement of parts to produce a` motor pump unit which is very compact and 'of light weight.
For the purpose of illustratingthe invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings a preferred embodiment of it which I have found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results. It is, however, to be understood that the various instrumentalitles of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and the invention is not limited to the exact arrangement and organization of these instrumentalitics as herein set forth.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a motor pump unit, embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is an end view of the pump housing with the motor removed.
Figure 3 is a sectional view, on an enlarged scale, of a flexible seal, and the impeller shaft.
Figure 4 is a top plan view with the motor removed.
Figure 5 is a transverse section of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a sectional view of the flexible con' nection for the motor and pump housing.
.Figure is a plan view of the impeller in detached position.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings:
A pump housing I is anged at its intake end as at 2 and at its discharge end as at 3 to adapt it to be connected directly in a pipe line, The pump housing I has an intake 4 leading to a passage 5 which curves downwardly and then up-` wardly to communicate with the annular, pump chamber 6 having a tangential discharge to a discharge passage l. The upper end of the pump housing is faced oli as at Il to form a seat for a closure 9.
'I'he closure 9 has a depending, annular portion which is received in the opening II of the pump housing. The pump housing has threaded tion fixed in the coupling sleeve.
2 holes I2 to receive bolts I3 which pass through the closure 9, through a sealing gasket I4 and into threaded engagement with the threaded holes to secure the closure in sealed engagement with the pump housing.
A coupling sleeve I5 is fixed to the shaft i9 of an electric motorin any conventional manner, and a depending shaft I'I has its upperpor- 'I'he coupling sleeve I5 has a clearance in an aperture I8 extending through the closure 9. The shaft I1 is mounted in a ilexible seal I9 and is connected with an impeller 20 by a set screw 2|. IThe impeller has its lower. central portion cone shaped as at 22 to direct the incoming iiuid to the blades of the impeller, said impeller having curved recesses at their bottoms.
The flexible seal I9 has a cup-shaped shell 23,
'within which a U-shaped packing 24 is contained and provided with a spring 25 which retains the packing in contact with the impeller shaft I1. 'Ihe shell 23 is swaged over a disc 26.
An electric motor 21 has a sectional housing,
l the sections of which arev secured in assembled condition by stay rods 28. These rods 28 are in threaded engagement, at theirlower ends, with metal sleeves 29 internally threaded at 3|! to receive the rods 23. As seen in Figure 6, the sleeves 29 are internally threaded at 3l to receive threaded studs 32 xed to iiexible, cushioning blocks 33. The* blocks 33 have depending, threaded studs 34 fixed to, them and secured to the pump housing by nuts 35.
The pump housing is connected in a pipe line by couplings 36 secured to the pump housing by bolts 31 and adapted for connection in a pipe line in any desired or conventional manner, for exampe by the threaded opeing as shown in Fig-4 ure v It has been found in the development `oi! this tion due to the employment of the iiexible con` nection between the motor vhousing and pump housingv and the flexible seal for the impeller Shaft.
The motor housing and the pump housing are preferably made of aluminum, magnesiuml or other light weight castings. Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a motor pump unit, a. pump housing having an inlet, an outlet and a pumping-chamber open at its-top, a cover plate sealed with said pump housing, closing said opening and centrally apertured, a iluidtight, flexible seal in said cover plate aperture, an impeller in the pumping chamber, a motor having its shaft extending through said cover plate aperture with a clearance, through said seal and fixed to said impeller, said motor being positioned above said plate, and cushionlng devices at aidistance from said shaft, ex-y tending upwardly from the cover plate between the bottom of the motor and the top of the cover plate and constituting the sole support of the motor, and secured to the housing of said motor and to said cover plate.
2. In a motor pump unit, a pump housing having an inlet, an outlet and a pumping chamber open at its top, a. cover plate closing said opening and centrally apertured, a uidtight, flexible seal in said cover plate aperture, an lmpeller ln said pumping chamber, a motor having its shaft extending through said cover plate aperture with a clearance, through said seal and fixed to said impeller, said motor being positioned above Said cover plate, stay rods passing through the housing of said motor, sleeves connected with the lower ends of said stay rods, and cushioningl devices having upwardly extending studs connected with said sleeves and having downwardly extending studs connected with said cover plate.
