Description

` (No Model.) l
` J. .'I. ESTABROOK.
Churn.
No. 243,230. lPatented June 21,1881.
1 minxzminllllmum i l I wil `\\\\\\\\\\\\\\N UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN T. ESTABROOK, OF SIDNEY, OHIO.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,230, dated June 21, 1881.
Application filed November 16, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. EsrABRooK, of Sidney, in the county of Shelby and Stateof 0hio,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specificatiomand in which- Figure l is a persective view.` Fig. 2 is alongitudinal vertical section; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the dasher detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures.
My invention has relation to churns with a vertical dasher having a rotary reciprocating motion; and it consists in the combination, with the churn-frame, and its hinged covers supporting the mechanism for operating the dasher, of two detachable cylindrical vessels, one inserted inside of and resting with its upper rim or lian ge upon the other, and the inner one of which forms the cream-containingvessel, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointedout in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, A A are the side pieces of the outer frame or support, which are united opposite to and parallel'to each other by the bottom A'.
Hinged upon the side pieces, A A, are halfcovers V-B B, one of which carries the operating mechanism composed of a segment, C, having teeth which mesh with a bevel-pinion, D, the shaft of which is mounted in a bearing in the cover, and projects on the inner side thereof, where it forms a square head, E.
F is a cylindrical can, 'made of sheet metal and of such a size that it will till up the space between the side pieces, AA. This can has a central step or bearing, G, in the center of its (No modell) flange, i, which is soldered upon a'square plate or collar, K, fitting tightly between the side walls, A A, and having an upturned edge or dan ge, k, the two sides of which impinge upon the wooden side pieces, A A, and the two opposite sides upon the sides of the covers B B when closed. The inner edge of collar K has a short tube, l, which projects down into the space x between the inner and outer cylinder, and the outer cylinder, F, has a faucet, m, on one side, through which its contents may be drawn off.
The dasher is composed of an upper and a lower cross, L L', the ends of which are con-l nected by vertical arms or beaters M, and the upper cross has a square socket in its center to receive the square head of shaft E when covers B B areclosed down, while the lower cross has a gudgeon, N, which is stepped into a central cup-shaped bearing in the bottom of the inner cylinder, I.
By making thc supporting-frame A A' A open at both ends, cylinder F, with its inner cylinder, I, may be inserted sidewise instead oflfrom the top. One or more sets of these double cylinders maybe used with a single frame, and whenl removed from the frame, or when not in use for churning, they may be y used as creaming-cans, the space between the inner and outer cylinders being lled with pounded ice, or a stream ot' cold water being kept running through the inlet l and out at the bottom through faucet m, or vice versa. When this method is used several cans may be connected into a system, the water running from one to the other through the series during the operation of raising the milk. When the cream has set the milk may be drawn 0E through a short pipe in the bottom of the can, stopped with a cork or screw-plug, when the canvis removed-to the churn-frame with its contents, -to which more may be added from the other cans readyfor churning.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States l The rotary churn herein described, consisting of the opensided case A, the cylinder F, removably placed therein at will, the cylinder I i, adapted t0 be received within the cylinder In testimony that I claim the foregoing as F, and form a water space between, with inlet my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in and outlet apertures, the oscillating flasher M presence of two Witnesses.
L L', having slot E, and the hinged covers B B, JOHN T. ESTABROOK. 5 carrying the operating mechanism, the whole Witnesses:
constructed, arranged, and combined to oper- A. J. REBSTOCK,
ate as and for the purposes set forth. D.OLDHAM.
