BURNISHING MOLDINGS.

To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ROBERT MARCHER, of the city, county, and State of New York, z
lin the lower end of which a burnishingtool have invented a new and useful Machine for Burnishing Moldings Covered with Gold or other Leaf Used for Such Purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a` full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in whichn Figure l, is an elevation of my invention. Fig. 2, is a transverse vertical section of do., taken in the line m, Fig. l.

The object of this invention is to supersede the manual operation of burnishing moldings by expediting the work to a very great degree and completing the same in a more uniform and perfect manner.
The invention consists in attaching the burnishing tool to a reciprocating slide or carriage and having the molding to be burnished fitted between center points, or in a lateral sliding frame, either or both, whereby the desired result is attained.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a framing which may be constructed in any proper way and B, B, are two parallel bars placed longitudinally thereon, and having grooves a, made in their inner sides, one in each, in which the sides of a plate or carriage C, are fitted, the grooves a, forming guides for said plates. This is clearly shown in Fig. 2.
The plate C, is allowed to slide freely between the bars B, B, and it has an upright D, attached, in which aswivel eye E, is fitted. This eye E, is formed in a rod l), which passes horizontally and loosely through the upright D, but which may be secured rigidly therein when desired by means of a thumb nut c, which is placed on a screw thread on one end of the rod b. On the upper lpart of the framing A, and at each. end a horizontal rod- J ,l isV placed'. These, rodsvmay be yplacedrin bearings K, that are either rigidly attached tothe framing A, or are tted on ways h, to admit of a lateral movement of the same. At the inner end of each rod J, a point i, is formed.
L, represents a bar which is suspended from the rods J, by rods M, the upper ends of which have eyes formed on them to fit on the rods J, as shown clearly in Fig. l. The rods m, having nuts ax, on their lower ends to admit of the raising and lowering of bar L, as may be desired.
The operation is as follows :--The molding N, to be burnished is placed on the bar L, and centered between the points i, c', and a reciprocating motion is given the plate or carriage C, by any motive power. If the molding' N, has a face which forms the art of a cylinder as represented in the drawings the points z', z', enter the ends of the molding coincident with the axis of a cylinder of which the face of the molding forms a\ part. By turning the nuts ax, the bar L, 85 may be raised or lowered so that moldings with either convex or concave surfaces may be properly centered and also moldings of varying thicknesses. A'As the burnishing tool I, moves back and forth, the molding is turned intermittingly between the points z', i, until the whole of its face surface is acted upon. If the face of the molding be of an ogee or similar wave form it is centered a plurality of times so that the varying curved surface of both the convex and concave portion, may be turned concentrcally beneath the burnisher, or nearly so, the self adjusting feature or property of the burnisher compensating for any deviation from a concentric movement. In case the face of the molding is formed of a curved and plane surface, the plane portion of the surface is moved laterally underneath the burnisher in consequence of the bearings K, being a1- lowed to slide on the ways It.
In consequence of having the burnisher I, connected to the upright D by means of the adjustable rods F, H, a requisite degree of adjustability is allowed so that the burnisher 110 may conform to the varying form of the surface of the molding.
