EMILE ZAEP-FEL, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
ROLLER-MILL FOR GRlNDiNG GRAIN, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,052, dated June 14, 1881. Application filed February 15, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
-Be it known that I, EMILE ZAEPFEL, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Roller-Mills, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to that class of rollermills which are employed for grinding and crnshin g grain, and for similar purposes.
The object of this invention is to construct the mill in such manner that the rollers can be nicely adjusted and adapted to the work which they are required to perform.
My invention consists, to that end, of the particular construction of the mechanism whereby the rollers are adjusted in the stationary frame in which they are mounted, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1- is a side elevation of my improved roller-mill with the driving-pulleys removed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, showing the driving-pulleys in place. Fig. 3 is a top-plan view of the rollermill. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section, on an enlarged scale, of one of the upper roller-bearings. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section thereof.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A represents the lower parts of the stationary side frames; B, the upper parts thereof, and B the caps, which are secured to the upper parts, B.
0 0 represent two horizontal rollers arranged between the upper portions, B, of the side frames, and G is a similar roller arranged between the lower portions, A, of the side frames and operating in conjunction with the roller 0. The upper rollers, O O, are journaled in bearings d d, which are made adjustable toward and from each other, between wedges D on the lower sides of the bearings and wedges E on their upper sides. The wedges D slide on inclines f, formed on the upper side of the bottom piece of the upper portion, B, of the side frame, and the wedges E bear against inclinesg, formed on the lower side of the cap B. The wedges D and E are adjusted by setscrews h, which work in threaded openings in the upright portions b of the upper portions, B, of the side frames, and are secured in place by jam-nuts i.
K represents a wedge, which is interposed between the innerinclined surfaces of the bearin gs d d, and which is made vertically-adj ustable by a set-screw, k, working in an opening in the cap B. The bearing (1 is held against outward movement by a set-screw, l.
m represents a sliding bolt, which bears against the outer side of the bearing d and moves loosely through an opening in the adjacent upright portion 11 of the upper portion, B, of the side frame.
M is a weighted lever, which is pivoted to the side frame at m, and which bears with its short arm m against the bolt m, whereby the bearin g d is pressed inward or toward the bearing 01 and against the wedge K. The surfaces of the wedges D and E which are in contact with the bearings 01 01 form parallel ways, between which the bearings slide toward and from each other. By adjusting the wedge K, the distance to which the bearings 01 d and the rollers 0 O can approach each other is increased or lessened as may be desired. After adjusting the wedge K the set-screw Z is adjusted to hold the bearing d stationary. The bearing d is pressed against the wedge K by the weighted lever M and yields when a hard object of unusual sizeenters between the rollers, thereby avoiding injury to the rollers. The position of the rollers 0 O is regulated vertically by adjusting the wedges D E.
n represents the bearing of the lower roller, 0 made vertically adjustable between ways 0, which are formed in the lower portion, A,
of the side frame. by set-screws p p.
Q Q Q are the driving-pulleys, respectively mounted on the shafts of the rollers C O 0 the'pulley Q being the smallest and the pulley Q the largest, whereby the circumferential velocity of the roller C'is made greater than that of the roller 0 and the velocity of the latter greater than that of the roller 0. The material is first reduced between the rollers O G and drops then on the roller 0 between which and the roller 0' the material is reduced a second time. Power is transmitted to The bearing a is adjusted the pulleys Q, Q Q by the same endless belt 1.
The wedges D E are provided with overlapping flanges, whichprojeet over the sides of the bearings 01 d and over the edges of the inclined ways on which the wedges slide, as
represented in Fig. 4, to prevent lateral displacement of the parts.
1 claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the roller-bearings (1 d, of the wedges D E, arranged, respectively, between the lower and upper sides of the rollerbearings and inclined waysfg, formed in the side frames, whereby the roller-bearings are rendered vertically adjustable,'and at the same time permitted to move horizontally toward and from each other, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the roller-bearin gs (Z d, of the wedges D E, arranged, respectively, between the lower and upper sides of the rollerbearings and inclined waysfg, formed in the side frames, and a vertically-adjustable wedge, K, arranged between the inner beveled sides of the bearings d 01, whereby the latter are rendered vertically adjustable and permitted to move horizontally toward and from each other, and their horizontal movement toward each other is limited, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the roller-bearings (l d, of the wedges D E, arranged, respectively, between the lower and upper sides of the rol lerbearings and inclined waysfg, formed in the side frames, whereby the roller-bearings are rendered vertically adjustable, and at the same time permitted to move horizontally toward and from each other, a vertically-adjustable wed ge, K, arranged between the beveled inner sides of the bearings d d, and a weighted lever, M, whereby the bearings 11 are pressed against the wedge K and permitted to recede therefrom when an object of improper size and hardness enters between the rolls, substantially as set forth. 7
4. The combination, with the roller-bearings d d, of the wedges D E, arranged, respectively, between the lower and upper sides of the rollerbearings and inclined ways f g, formed in the side frames, a vertically-adjustable wedge, K, arranged between the beveled inner .sides of the bearings d d, and the bearings n of the third roller made vertically adjustable in the side frames, substantially as set forth.
