UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST REINWALD, OF GALLIPOLIS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF TO ALBERT MOGAFFERTY, OF SAME PLACE.`
VEHICLE-SPRING BRACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,983, dated June 14, 1881.
Application filed April 14, 1881. (Model.)
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST REINWALD, of Gallipolis, in the county of Gallia and State of Ohio, have invented a new and nsefullmprovement, in Vehicle-Spring Braces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a means for preserving the vertical position of vehicle-springs in their up-and-down movement when the ve.-
Io hicle is in motion, and also for preventing the breaking of the springs.
The invention consists in a novel construction, arrangement, and combination, with the vehicle-body and the springs, of two plates, and
I5 devices connected therewith and with the vehicle body and springs, as hereinafter more particularly described and set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side viewof a buggy with my improvement zo applied thereto. Fig. 2is a top view of myiuvention. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken in the line x x of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken in the lille y y of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts.
A A represent the front and rear sprin gs of a buggy or other vehicle, which are attached ,to the axle-trees in the usual or any suitable manner.
3o B represents a circular plate having its periphery formed into a rim, b, and having in its center a cylindrical projection or boss, b2.
l G is a circular plate, smaller in diameter than the plate B within the rim b, and pro- 3 5 vided with a central opening fitting the pro jection or boss b2. The inner surface of the rim b is provided with an arc-shaped abutment, bx, and the plate C is provided with a similarly-shaped projection, cx.
4o D is a washer, of leather or other suitable material, interposed between the top of the I plate B and the bottom of the plate G.
Attached to or formed with the under side ot' bottom of the plate B are two lugs, EE,
4 5 diametrically opposite to each other, in which Work two bolts or pins, G G. Each bolt has its outer end formed into aforked lug, g, while its rear end is screw-threaded and is held in place by a nut, f. The bolt G is shouldered,
5o both for engagementwith 'the sleeve and for the reception ofthe nut, so that when the nut is screwed home the bolt is free to turn in the lug.
H is a clip having one end formed into a forked lug, h, and the other end formed for attachment to the upper surface of the lower leaf of the spring A by a bolt,or in any other suitable manner.
J is a rod havingits ends formed into perforated lugs M2, lying at right angles to each other.
The rimmed or cupped plate B, containing the plate G and washer D, is secured to the center of the under side of the bottom of the vehicle by a bolt, K, the head of which is square and lies between the nuts j' f, and prevents them from working otf from the bolts G G, said bolt K being passed upward through the boss b2 and through the bottom of the vehicle and secured by a nut, l. The rods J are then placed in position so as to connect the bolts G with the clips H, the lug i of each rod being pivoted in the forked lng g of one of the bolts, and the lug l2 in the forked lug h ofthe clip H. As the body of the vehicle rises and falls when traveling over rough or uneven surfaces, the springs are retained ina vertical position and prevented from swaying backward or forward by th oscillation of the plate B on the bolt K as a center; and as the springs rebound on the -upward motion of the body they are arrested and prevented from rising too high by the engagement of the projection cX of plate Gwith the abutment bX of plate B, l and are thus prevented from breaking.
By-arranging the lugs t' l2 on the rods J at right angles to each other provision is made for both the vertical and lateral motion of said rods as the vehicle-body rises and falls, and the plate B oscillates on its center, and the bolts G turn in their seats in the lugs E.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the vertical springs A A, of the oscillating plate B, having the abutment bx, the rim b, and the boss b2, the smaller circular plate C, having the projection c", the washer D, the shouldered bolts G G, working in lugs E of plate B, and having a forked lug, g, the rods J, pivoted in clips H of the springs, and the bolt K, as shown and described.
AUGUST REINWALD.
