This invention relates to an elevating and adjusting device for presses of the class embodying a frame which carries the operating means 'of the press, and is pivotally and adiustably mounted on a base.
It has been found that presses which may be elevated and adjusted present great hazards for the workmen engaged in the elevation thereof. According to the present invention, the hazards to the workmen, particularly those behind the press, are eliminated.
The construction of a press which eliminates hazards to the workmen engaged in the elevation thereof has to include locking means for holding the frame in the position desired after the adjusting operation.
Accordingly, it is an object of this invention to provide a press with means for elevation and adjustment of the same so as to eliminate the hazard to the workmen engaged in such elevation.
It is another object of the invention to relieve the locking means for holding the frame in position from the stress exerted by th weight of the adjustable part of the press during the adjusting operation.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic side elevation of the press provided with an elevating and adjusting device according to the invention, said device being shown with the adjustable part of the press in upright position.
Fig. 2 is a front View of the press shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side view of the lower portion of the press shown in Fig. 1 with the adjustable part in inclined position.
Fig. 4 is a section on a larger scale through the elevating and adjusting device, taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Numeral 1 indicates the base of the press. Numeral 2 indicates the frame carrying the bed 28 and the usual tool holder and driving elements of the press (not shown in the drawing). Said frame is pivotally secured to the base I by bolts 3, 3, and is held in any one of the desired positions by bolts 4, 4 passing through holes 5, 5 in said frame and through one of the pairs of holes 6, 6, 1, 1 and 8, 8 in the base I.
The elevating and adjusting device comprises a piston rod 9, one end of said piston rod being pivotally secured to bracket 10 attached to the lower end of the frame 2. The other end of the piston rod 9 is attached to a piston ll movable in a cylinder I2, which is pivotally secured at 13 to the base I. The outward movement of the piston H is effected by a:fiuid, preferably oil, de livered into the cylinder 12 by a pump l4 fixed to said cylinder l2.
The pump comprises a piston l5 movable in a bore 15 in the cylinder vhead H. The front end of the bore I6 is connected by a conduit l8 provided with a suction valve l9 (replaceable ball check type) to a fluid container which is preferably formed by a jacket 20 surrounding the cylinder l2. A branch pipe 2| connects the section of the conduit is between the bore l6 and the valve l9 with the cylinder i2. A pressure valve 22 (replaceable ball check type) controls the flow of the fluid through said pipe 2|. Another connection between the container 20 and the cylinder I2 is formed by another bore 23 in the cylinder head ll, said connection being controlled by a hand operated needle valve 24 screwed in a bore 26 of the cylinder head H.
The piston I5 is actuated by a lever 25 linked to said piston and to the cylinder head H. The outer end of the lever 25 is adapted to receive one end of a handle 21, the other end of said handle being shaped as to fit into or on a correspondingly shaped part of the head of the needle valve 24.
When the press is in upright position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the needle, or bleeding valve, is closed, and therefore the connection between the container 20 and the cylinder I2 is interrupted. The press is locked in this position by the bolts 4, 4. In order to bring the press to the inclined position shown in Fig. 3 the bolts 4, 4 are removed and the needle valVe is slightly opened by means of the handle 21. As the weight of the turnable part of the press is now entirely transmitted by the piston rod 9 to the piston H the fluid in the cylinder i2 is slowly pressed back through the bore 23 into the container 20. As
the opening of the valve 24 is very small a brakbolts '4, 4 are inserted into the holes, 5, 5, of the frame 2 and the holes, 1, 1, of the base I, looking thereby the press in the desired inclined position.
Inorder to'elevate the press from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Figs. 1
3 and 2, the handle 21 is inserted into the socket at the end of the lever 25 and a slight pumping action is performed, just enough to relieve the locking bolts 4, 4 from the Weight of the turnable part of the press, After removing the bolts 4, a pumping is continued until the upright position is reached, whereupon the press is again locked in this position by inserting the locking bolts 4, 4.
While I have particularly illustrated and described one embodiment of my invention, it should be understood that my invention is not limited thereto or thereby but is defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1, An elevating and adjusting device for a press, having a frame pivotally mounted on a base, said device Comprising a piston rod linked to said frame and operated by a piston Working in a cylinder linked to said base, and locking means holding the pivotable part of the press in the desired position.
2. In a fluid operated elevating and adjusting device as defined in claim 1, a pump delivering the driving fluid to the pivotable cylinder, said pump being mounted on said cylinder.
3. In a fluid operated elevating and adjusting device as defined in claim 1, a tank and a pump delivering the fluid from said tank to the cylinder, both the tank and the pump being mounted on said cylinder.
4. In a fluid operated elevating and adjusting device as defined in claim 1, a tank and a pump delivering the fluid from said tank to the pivotable cylinder, and a bleeding valve controlling a connection between said tank and said cylinder.
5. In a fluid operated elevating and adjusting device as defined in claim 1, a tank and a pump delivering the fluid from said tank to the pivotable cylinder, a bleeding valve controlling a connection between said tank and said cylinder, both the tank, the pump and the bleeding valve being mounted on said cylinder.
6. In a fluid operated elevating and adjusting device as defined in claim 1, a tank and a pump delivering the fluid from said tank to the pivotable cylinder, a bleeding valve controlling a connection between said tank and said cylinder,
a leverage secured to the aforesaid cylinder and adapted to operate the aforesaid pump, the last member of said leverage being adapted to receive a removable handle which is also adapted to operate the aforesaid bleeding valve.
