MECHANICAL MOTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,798, dated June 14, 1881.
Application filed April 30, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS SILLIMAN, of Three Rivers, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Motors 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved mechanical motor. Fig. 2 is a top view. Fig. 3 is a sectional viewtaken in a vertical plane through the shaft of the escapement-wheel. Fig. 4. is a vertical sectional view longitudinally through the operating-lever; and Fig. 5 is a detail view, in perspective, of the escapement and operating mechanism.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to mechanical motors of that class which are run by weights and used for the purpose 'of operating churns, pumps, and lightmachinery; and it consists in certain improvements in the escapement, by which the operation of the device is regulated and therotary converted into a reciprocating motion, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the frame of the machine, at the end of which is erected a frame tower, B, provided at its top with bearin gs O for a shaft, D, carrying a pulley, E. i
F is the winding-drum, the shaft of which is journaled in the sides of frame A. p
G is a gear-wheel journaled loosely upon said shaft, and provided, in the usual manner, with a spring-pawl, H, engaging a ratchet, I, formed upon the winding-drum. A chain or rope, J, attached to'the latter, passes over the pulley E, and has a weight, K, attached to its free end. It will be seen that by winding the rope upon the drum by means of a key or crank attached to the shaft of the latter the weight is raised, and when allowed to drop rotates the winding-drum, together with the gear wheel G, which is connected thereto by the pawl and ratchet. The gear-wheel G engages a pinion, L, upon a shaft, M, carrying at its outer end the escapement-wheel N. The latter consists of two parallel vertical disks, 0 0, connected by a suitable number of equidistant cross-pieces, P P.
Q is a lever journaled in a suitable bracket upon the side of the frame, and provided at one end with a pivoted pitman, R, which may be weighted at its lower end. The rod or pitman R has a notch, S, formed in one side, which may engage the cross-pieces, P of the escapement-wheel. The outer end of lever Q may be connected by a pitman, T, to the handle of a pump, or in any. suitable manner to the machinery to be operated.

U is a lever, pivotedv to a bracket, V, upon the outside of the frame by a slot, in said lever, which latter is provided with a spring, X, attached to the bracket V, as shown in broken lines in Fig. 1. The upper end of lever U is provided with a notch, Y, engaging the cross-pieces P of the cscapementwheel, as shown.
To the side of the lever U is pivoted a triplever, Z, the purpose and operation of which will be hereinafter described.
A guide, A, for the pitman or rod R is secured to the side of the frame, to which a bracket, B, having studs or stops G for the lever Q, is likewise secured.
To operate the trip-lever Z, a stud, D, secured upon the side of the lever Q, is employed. The said lever Q is also provided with an adjustable weight, E, by placing which at a greater or less distance from the fulcrum the motion may be accelerated or retarded.
A bracket, F, pivoted to the side of frame A, is provided with a crank-handle, Gr,and with a stud, H, upon which latter the leverQ may be supported when it is desired to temporarily discontinue the operation of the machine.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation of my invention will be readily understood.
When the escapement-wheel revolves one of its cross-pieces will engagethe notch in rod or pitman It, thus raising the latter and causing a downward motion or stroke of the outer end of lever Q. The upstroke is caused by the adjustable weight E upon the inner end of said lever. Whenthe rod It has been carried up to the limit of the cross-piece P, which it at the time engages, the said cross-piece catches in the notch Y of lever U, which thus temporarily retains the escapement-wheelin a stationary position, together with the operatingweight and intermediate mechanism. The lower end of the rod R is now brought in contact with the next cross-piece P of the escapement-Wheel, which forces it in a rearward direction, thus releasing its upper notched end from the first cross-piece, thus permitting the lever Q to drop, impelled by weight E, until the stud D strikes the trip-lever Z, thus releasing the lever U from its hold upon the escapement-wheel, permitting the latter to turn and lift the rodR for a repetition of the operation. The spring X at the end of lever U serves to prevent any sudden and injurious shock as the escapement-wheel revolves.
This machine is simple,inexpcnsive, and very convenient for operating any light machinery.
It will be particularly observed that the motion of the escapemen t-wheel and weight is intermitting, thus giving at each part turn of the said escapenient wheel a fresh impetus, the result of which is to save power, and accordingly increasing the usefulness of the machine.

2. The escapement-wheel herein described, consisting of flat vertical disks connected by equidistant cross-pieces P, as herein described.
3. The combination, with the escapementwheel having cross-pieces P, of the lever Q, having pivoted rod or pitman It, provided with notch S, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination of the escapement-whcel, the leverQ, having pivoted notched rod R, and the adjustable weight E, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination, with the escapementwheel having cross-pieces P, of the lever U, having notch Y and trip-lever Z, as and for the purpose set forth.
6. The combination, with the escapementwheel, of the lever U, having notch Y, trip-lever Z, slot W, and spring X, as and for the purpose set forth.
7. Thecombinationoftheescapement-wheel, the lever Q, having pivoted notched rod R and stud D, and the lever U, having notch Y and trip-lever Z, as and for the purpose shown and specified.
