Description
C. H. BALLARD JOURNAL OILER Sept. 23, 1947.
Filed Sept. 8. 1944 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 GZBQZZEIJ INVENTbR.
Patented Sept. 23, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOURNAL OILER Commodore Harrison Ballard, Princeton, W. Va.
Application September 8, 1944, Serial No. 553,238
1 Claim.
This invention relates to means for oiling journals, one of the objects being to provide a means located in the journal box and adapted to be actuated by the rotation of the journal, to apply a lubricant to a journal intermittently.
A further object is to provide an oiling device of this character which is simple in construction, is protected by the journal box, is smooth in operation and permits the elimination of oiled waste, such as commonly employed.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawingsthe preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings:
Figure l is a central vertical section through the journal box showing the present improvements combined therewith, the lubricant applicator being shown by full lines in one position and by dotted lines in another position.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section through the journal box and shows the journal and its bearing partly in section.
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical longitudinal section through the wiping head of the applicator.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view thereof.
Figure 5 is a section on line 55, Figure 3.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, I designates a journal box of the usual construction, in the upper portion of which is positioned the usual journal bearing 2 in engagement with the upper portion of the journal 3.
The journal and box are assembled in the usual way and, as shown, the journal is provided with the usual end collar 4.
The structure constituting the present invention includes a lever 5 fulcrumed as at 6 in the support 1 extending upwardly from the bottom of the box l This lever has a long arm 8 and a short arm 9. The longarm has its free end extended between lugs H] extended downwardly from the sides of the plate l I, having openings I2 therein. A flange I3 is extended upwardly from the margin of the plate and extends along all sides of the plate. This flange surrounds the surface and holds a pad [4 of highly absorbent soft material. The pad can be held detachably to the plate by inserting pins l5 therethrough and through opposed flanges as shown partly in Figure 5. A pivot pin [6 extends transversely through the ends of arm 8 and through the lugs I3 and serves to hold these parts assembled. The pivot pin is positioned nearer the outer end of plate ll than the other end, so that this plate is slightly over-balanced and, when arm 8 is in the lowermost position the plate will rest on the offset terminal portion I! of the arm. This is shown by broken lines in Figure 1.
The short arm 9 of the lever has a small roller l8 mounted thereon, this roller being held in place by any suitable means, such as a nut 19, a spacing washer 20, and a lock washer 2| or the like, by mounting on the threaded terminal 22 of the short arm.
A cam 23 is bolted or otherwise fastened to the end of the journal and has a portion 24 projecting beyond the periphery of the journal. This cam is located where it can contact and depress the roller 9 once during each rotation of the journal 3.
A certifiable lubricant is adapted to be placed in the lower portion of the journal box where it can be absorbed by the pads [4 when the pad is in its lowermost position as indicated by broken lines in Figure 1. As the journal 3 rotates during the movement of the car, the cam 23 will intermittently engage and depress the roller l8. Each depression will result in winging arm 8 upwardly and this will apply the pad M to the surface of the journal. Consequently, said surface will be maintained lubricated by the successive applications of the pad thereto.
The support I can be built into the bottom portion of the journal box as shown, or, obviously, could be detachably mounted therein, in which case it would be possible to equip old journal boxe with the present improvement.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a journal box and a rotatable journal therein, of a support within and extending upwardly from the bottom of the journal box, a lever fulcrumed between its ends in COMMODORE HARRISON BALLARD.
