TAILSTOCK OFFSET. GAUGE Filed June 6, 1944 m m w Patented Sept. 9, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TAILSTOCK OFFSET GAUGE Robert C. Olds, Gardena, Calif.
Application June 6, 1944, Serial No. 538,944
2 Claims. 1
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in lathes, the principal object being to provide a simple and positive acting tailstock ofiset gauge.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a tailstock ofiset gauge which requires no moving parts and which can be conveniently used in conjunction with micrometer calipers or other means whereby the amount of tailstock ofiset can be readily determined.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following description.
In the drawings Figure 1 represents a fragmentary perspective view showing the tailstock improved with the offset gauge.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of the tailstock showing the offset gauge.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that numeral 5 generally refers to a specially constructed tailstock operative on a conventional lathe 6.
The tailstock 5 consists of an upper portion 1 and a lower portion 8.
The lower portion 8 has a narrow protuberance 9 projecting from its outer end and this is provided with an upstanding rib H! which fits into a correspondingly formed recess in the underside of a protuberance H which projects from the upper portion 1 of the tailstock 5.
When the sides of the protuberance 9 and rib I0 are flush with the sides of the protuberance II, the tailstock is on center with the lathe spindle. However, any oifset of the upper protuberance l l with respect to the lower protuberance 9 will spell an ofiset which can be readily measured and determined by micrometer calipers.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the claimed as new is:
1. In a lathe, a tailstock including a pair of members transversely movable relative to one another, tailpieces extending rearwardly from the exact center of each member, the side walls of each tailpiece being exactly flush with one another when the tailstock is centered with the lathe spindle, said tailpieces being relatively narrow as compared to their length and to said tailstock and including means whereby any deviation from center will be instantly discernable and whereby measurement may be accurately made as to the offset relation of one tailstock member to the other.
2. In a lathe, a tailstock including a pair of members transversely movable relative to one another, tailpieces extending rearwardly from the exact center of each member, the side walls of each tailpiece being exactly flush with one another when the tailstock is centered with the lathe spindle, said tailpieces being relatively narrow as compared to their length and to said tailstock and including means whereby any deviation from center will be instantly discernable and whereby measurement may be accurately made as to the offset relation of one tailstock member to the other, said means including a tongue on the lower tailpiece operating in a groove in the upper tailpiece, and said tailpieces being integral with said tailstock members.
invention, what is ROBERT C. OLDS.
