To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ABRAHAM OLIPHANT, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Deersart to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in whichattachment for vehicles. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same; and Fig. 4 is a plan, a side view, and a section of the tongue or draft-bar-receivin g socket.

This invention relates to improvements in draft or whiffletree attachments for vehicles, having for its object to apply thedraft directly upon the front axle, and at the same time to permit the bitching-point to remain at the usual place; and it consists of a U-shaped bent bow, the arms of which may diverge from each other, adapted to permit of the attachment thereto of the whifdetrees, and hung at about `its center, with its supporting ring or device connected to a cross-piece of the hound, in close proximity to the axle; and,further, in certain` details of construction appertaining to .the tongue-socket combined with the hound of the front axle, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, A marks thefront axle, upon which are supported the rear ends of the hound B, further connected thereto by a bracing bow or frame, B', secured to the under side of the axle.

Bolted upon and to the axle A is the bolster C, moving between guides a fastened to the hound B. A reversed curved bar or brace, b,

`is fastened to the hound B, withits middle convex surface arranged in close proximity to the axle A.

Between and arranged centrally ofthe bars B B of the hound is the tongue or pole socket D, at which point the said bars of 'the hound .are connected or braced to the bar b, and to Figurel is a side View of my improved draftl the draft-bow, presently described, by rods c c. The socket D is provided upon its upper side with slots d to receive the upper bow or bar, B, of the hound, and upon its under side with similar slots, d', to receive the lower bow or bar, B', of the hound, thus permitting of its being firmly clamped in position. The tongue or pole e `is connected to its socketl) in the usual way-by pin or otherwise.

E is the draft attachment, which consists of a U -shaped bent bow, the arms of which may diverge from each other, as shown in Fig. 2, and

are adapted to permit ofthe attach ment thereto of the whifdetrees F, occupying the usuial point of hitching the traces or draft-chains. The arms of the draft attachment E are Wconnected and braced together by a cross-bar, f, passing between the rods cabove and belowit. The convex portion of the bow'E is hung at about its middle in a ring, g, connected to the bar b, arranged closely to the front axle, within which it is adapted to slide to yield to unevenness iu draft.

From the foregoing it will be observed that while the usual bitching-point is preserved the draftv is applied directly upon the axle, by which greater leverage is obtained to more readily and with greater power lift a wheel, or both wheels, at the front of the vehicle, where the greatest strain is borne, out of a rut Vor over an obstruction.

Havingthus fully described my invention,

I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Llna vehicle draft attachment, the U- shaped bow- E, hung at its center in close proximity to the front axle, and having its -ends provided with suitable clips to hold the whffletrees in proper position to be hitched to on opposite sides of the tongue, and supported in proper horizontal position by the hounds, substantially as set forth.

2. In a draft attachment for vehicles, the combination, with the frames or bows B B of the front-axle hound, of the tongue or pole socket D, having upon its upper side slots d and upon its under side slots d d', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. Thecombination, with the axle A, of the front bowed hounds, B B', secured respectively on the upper and under sides of the axle, and arranged parallel with each other, and
