UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH HARBAUGH, or LAWRENCE, KANSAS.
BARBED FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,636, dated June '7, 1881.
- Application filed January 27, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J OSEPH W. HARBAUGH, of Lawrence, in the county of Douglas and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbed Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms part of this specification, and in which is represented a perspective of two strips of my fence united, fully exhibiting the ribs and barbs as I propose forming them.
The nature ofmy invention consists in providing the flat strips composing the rails of the fence with three strengthening-ribs, one along the longitudinal center and also along its upper and lower edges, and then cutting the edge ribs alternately, as fully illustrated in the drawing, and bending the severed portions in opposite directions and at right angles to the strips to form barbs or spurs, all as will i be hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art to avail themselves of the benefits of my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction.
A A represent two flat metal strips of sufficient width to enable them to be easily observed by stock.
0 O 0 indicate strengthening ribs, one along the longitudinal center of the plates or strips, while the remaining ribs are formed on or along the upper and lower edges thereof. At sufficient intervals the ribs 0 O are cut alternately, and each end thus formed is bent out at right angles to the strips, but in opposite direction to each other, thus forming barbs on both sides of the fence. The incisions of the ribs should be slanting or beveled, so as to leave sharpened or pointed ends, as fully seen' in the drawing. It will be observed that one side of each of the strips A A is flat, which enables them to be closely united by means of pins or bolts D. l derive from thismode of constructing a barbed fence greater strength and efficiency, as the strips are not materially weakened by the cutting of the ribs, there bein g still opposite each space where the barbs are turned outward two ribs for imparting rigidity and strength to the strips. I form the ribs on the strips or rails either by means of two rollers arranged one above the other, the under one being grooved at its center'and sides, the upper one smooth, and the heated strips rolled between said rollers, or I may have dies which form the ribs as the strips are forced through said dies.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a barbed fence, the rails A A, provided or formed on their outer sides with re-enforei 11g central and edge ribs, O 0 0, the outer or edge ribs being cut at alternate intervals to each other, and the two ends thus formed bent at right angles to the rail, in opposite direction to each other, to form barbs B B, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH W. HARBAUGH.
