This invention relates to a grinding machine for grinding arcuate profiles on workpieces.
An object of the invention is to provide a grinding machine with means for associating a workpiece with the grinding wheel, rotating the workpiece about a desired center, and reciproeating the workpiece across the face of the wheel as it is being rotated.
Another object of the invention is to provide a grinding machine with a workpiece support mounted for rotation about a pivot with means for effecting reciprocation of said support as the work is rotated.
Other objects and features of the invention will be readil apparent to those skilled in the art from the specification and appended drawing illustrating certain preferred embodiments in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevati'onal view of the grinding machine according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the grinding machine.
Figure 3 is a partial top plan view of the grinding machine.
I Figure 4 is a partial vertical sectional view through the grinding machine.
Figure 5 is a sectional view on line V--V of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a View similar to Figure 5, but with the work manipulating means in another position.
Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure 5, but with the view manipulating means in one limiting position of movement.
Figure 8 is a plan view of a workpiece which may be formed in the machine.
Figure}? is a side elevational view of the workpiece of Figure 8.
The grinding machine as illustrated in the drawings comprises a table I upon which is supported a motor 2 and a grinding wheel 3 driven thereby through a gearing system, not shown but contained in the gear housing 4. The housing 4 supports a bracket 5 havin a pair of side wings 6 in which is pivotally supported a platform 1. Upon the platform 1 is mounted a way 8 with which cooperates a slide 9. An adjusting screw H is threaded into the way 8 and has a double collar engagement with the slide 9 as shown more particularly in Figure 4. On the slide 9 is mounted a way l2 with which is assodated a transverse slide I3 Upon the slide i3 is supported an arcuate guiding and retaining plate ['4 having a notched periphery at [5 providing an overhanging portion within which is 2 disposed the notched complementary end of a plate 16 attached to the under surface of a work holder ll. Through the plate M and the slide is is a bushing it within which is rotatably mounted a pivot pin l9 keyed at its upper end to the work holder il The way I2 has a cutout portion 21 in which is disposed a link 22 keyed to the lower end of the pivot pin 9. The opposite end of the link 22 is keyed to a pin 23 reciprocal within a slot 2 in the slide 9. The link 22 is freely movable within the cutout portion 2| between the slides 9 and it.
In the upper portion of the work holder H are provided seats 25 for the workpiece 25. For holding the workpiece 28 against the seats 25 there is provided locking means formed by a lever 2i carrying an adjustable work engaging stud 28 and pivoted on the work holder I! at 29. For locking the lever 2? in place, there is provided a manually operable lever 3i pivoted on the work holder at 32 and having a pin 33 for engaging and holding the lever 21 in its locking position.
Extending from the housing A is a platform 3*! carrying trunnions 35 within which is pivoted a shaft 35 having an operatin crank 31 and carrying a cam 38 engaging an adjustable follower 39 on the platform I. The platform I has an integral upwardly extending arm All carrying an adjustable stop 42 engaging with the head of stud 43 in the bracket 5. The slide I3 is provided with extensions 34 at its opposite sides carrying adjustable stops 45 limiting the extreme positions of the Work holder ll.
In the operation of the grinding machine according to the present invention, the parts are in an inoperative, work inserting and removing, position as shown in Figure 1. The workpiece is placed upon the seats 25 and locked in position by manipulation of the lever 3|. The crank 3'! is then manipulated to rotate the platform I and the parts supported thereon into their horizontal position as shown in Figure 4. This is effected through engagement of the cam 38 with the follower 39 to effect counterclockwise rotation of the platform '5 until the stop 2 engages the head of stud G3. Thereafter, the profile is placed upon the workpiece by moving the work holder I? through the desired angular movement.
In Figures 8 and 9, the workpiece illustrated is an optical prism and the machine is utilized to form the arcuate profiles at the opposite ends of the prism. The full lines of Figure 8 represent the finished product and the dotted lines the initial blank upon which the operation is performed. The radius of the arcuate profile is determined by adjustment of the slide 9 by means of adjusting screw II to move the center of rotation determined by the axis of pin 19 toward and away from the grinding wheel 3.
An important feature of applicant's invention lies in the provision of transverse movement of the workpiece as it is being rotated with respect to the grinding wheel. This is effected through the operation of the link 22, pin 23 and slot 24. As the work holder [1 is rotated about the axis of the pin IS, the link 22 rotates therewith. However, the pin 23 is mounted on the link 22 and movement of the pin 23 is limited to' a rectilinear one by the slot 24. Accordingly, as pin [9 rotates it must move in a transverse direction as the pin 23 moves within the slot. This transverse movement is effected by transverse movement of the slide [3 with respect to the way [2. The transverse movement of the pin l9 which will carry the work holder and work therewith is indicated in Figures 5, 6 and 7 in which as the work holder I! is rotated, as indicated by the arrows in a counterclockwise direction, the pin 23 will move toward the left and effect a movement of the pivot pin l9 downwardly as viewed in these figures, such movement being accompanied by movement bodily of the slide I3 and the parts supported thereon. This trans verse movement of the work as it is rotated with respect to the grinding wheel spreads the grinding operation over a large surface and avoid the formation of a groove within the wheel which would destroy its life and accuracy.
The adjustable stops 45 determine the angular movement of work holder H. In the present instance, they are located to provide for 180 rotation of the workpiece to form the desired profile of the workpiece as shown in Figure 8.
While certain preferred embodiments of the invention have been specifically disclosed, it is understood that the invention is not limited thereto, as many variations will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art and the invention is to be given its broadest possible interpretation within the terms of the following claims.
