HORSE-YOKE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,530, dated June '7, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OHAUNoEY M. HALL, of Westwood, Kalkaska county, Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Animal-Yokes, of which the following is a specification.

The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construclion of that class of devices which are usually used upon oxen, and denominated oxyokes, but in this instance comprises a device which is applicable for use upon horses.

The invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts whereby the draft will be equal upon both shoulders of the animal, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which my invention is shown in perspective, A represents the yoke, which is formed of two pieces of wood bent in the form shown, and rigidly secured at their centers to a block, -D, having curved sides to receive them.

To the ends of the yoke I pivotally secure plates B B, in the latter of which I pivot the lower ends of the hames O, as shown, while the upper plates, B, are slotted at their ends to receive the upper ends of the hames, and in which they may be secured by a proper o strap, a, or in any other convenient manner.

In practice it is designed thatihe horses shall wear collars, as with the ordinary hameharness, and the hames 0 shall embrace such collars, the draft being applied to the ring at 5 the center of the yoke, as in the usual manner.

By the use of a yoke constructed substantially as described the draft is equal upon the shoulders of the animals being worked, while 40 free action of the shoulders is permit-ted, the same as in the use of the ordinary tugs and whiffletrees.

Where it is designed to work cattle with the yoke, they should also wear collars,or the hames 4 5 should be rounded, so as to present a smooth surface to the shoulder.

What I claim as my invention is A horse-yoke consisting of the bent wooden strips A A, rigidly fastened at their centers 0 to the hollowiug or curved sides of the block D, substantially as described.
