PlSTON-PACKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.7242,527, dated June '7, 1881.
Application filed October 4, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs B. FULTON, of the city of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piston-Packin g for Steam-Engines, Pumps, Sto., which invention is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to that class of eXpansion-packing in which the packing-rings are set out by springs.
The object of my invention is simplicity and economy in the construction of the expansionrin gs, and also to prevent the leakage of steam into the interior of or between the rings.
My invention consists in an expansible packing-ring recessed on its front edge, and an expansible clip-ring, which-fills said recess and is attached to the ring, its circumference being coincident therewith. p
The invention is shown in detail in the drawings, in which all similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of my improved expansion rings, having its clip seated in its recess and attached to the ring. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of two of the rings put together, one of them having its clip in its recess and the other having its recess unoccupied.
A is the expansion-ring, cut completelyT through, as shown by B.
C is the clip, which is made of the same external diameter as the ring. Its body is completely cut through, as shown by D.
E is a recess turned out of the true ring A, on its front-face edge, to a depth of about three-fourths of the thickness of the ring, and in width about one-sixth of the width of its face, the clip C being made of a size corresponding to the size of the recess into which it ts.
F F F are rivets which pass through the body of the clip and into the ring, so as to attach the clip to the ring and prevent its turning on or working round on the ring, and thus the rin g-cut B and the clip-cut D are kept away from each other.
Operation: Two or more of these expansionrin gs are placed on the spider with their backs together and the clip side outward and exposed to the action of the steam, care being taken that their cuts are away from each other, so as to break joint. Thus the steam is prevented from entering within or between the rings, and injurious friction is prevented.
It will be understood that the usual spring ring or rings are placed inside of the eXpansion-rings and set out by one of the various spring devices in common use.
l do not Wish to be understood as broadly claiming the reeessing the packing-ring on its front face and the filling said recess with a clipring whose circumference is coincident with that of the true ring.
I am aware that segmental rings have been secured together by rivets, and do not therefor broadly claim such.
I am also aware that a solid junk-rin g has been provided with split clips or rings, and I do not claim such, broadly; but,

The piston-packing herein described, consisting, of the expansible rings A, provided with recesses for the expausible clips C, said rings and clips being secured together, all constructed and arranged as shown, and for the object set forth.
