This invention relates to improvements in shaker conveyors, and more particularly relates to improvements in articulated connections in shaker conveyor trough lines arranged to permit lateral movement of one trough of the conveyor with respect to another trough of the conveyor, for conveying material around corners.
Considerable difficulty has heretofore been encountered in articulated connections in shaker conveyor trough lines or swivels in that the mine floor is very seldom level and irregularities in the mine floor cause bending of the base of the swivel, which makes it difficult-to hold the swivel in position on the ground and causes binding of the articulated troughs and the trough supporting means therefor mounted on the base, with a resultant frequent breakage of parts of the swivel.
The device of my present invention has as its principal object to provide a novel form of holding connection between the holding jacks and the base of a swivel, permitting relative vertical movement between the jacks and base when the jacks are initially set between the mine roof and the ground, and holding the base firmly in position on the ground by forces exerted in planes substantially parallel to the supporting surface of the base of the swivel, when tightening the jacks against the mine roof, and thus avoiding distortion or bending of the swivel base and bind.. ing of the moving parts mounted thereon.
This and other objects of my invention will appear from time to time as the following specication proceeds and with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:

In the drawings, the embodiment of my invention illustrated is shown as providing an articulated connection between a driving trough I0 of a shaker conveyer trough line and a forwardly spaced driven trough I I, to permit lateral swinging movement of said driven trough with respect to said driving trough about a plurality of parallel spaced vertical axes, so the conveyor may carry material around corners, or so a pick-up member on the forward end of the driven trough may pick up material from the extreme corners of a wide room, or may be extended along a cross cut or entry at an angle to the main part of the conveyor, to pick up material therefrom.
The articulated connection between the driving and the driven troughs of the conveyor operates on principles somewhat similar to those shown and described in Patent No. 2,330,946, which issued to E. R. Bergmann on October 5, 1943, and includes a base I2 adapted to be held in position on the ground during operation of the conveyor by means of a plurality of jacks I3, I3 in a manner which will hereinafter be more fully described as this specification proceeds.
A relatively short intermediate trough I5 having outwardly flared curved forward and rear ends I6 and I1, respectively, is connected between a connecting trough I9, connected at its receiving end to the driven trough II, and a connecting trough 2i] detachably connected at its discharge end to the driving trough I0 in a well known manner. Said connecting trough I9 has a curved discharge end conforming substantially to the form of the curved forward end IB of the intermediate trough I5, and is nested within said forward end of said trough so as to discharge material onto said trough when in various positions of articulation with respect thereto. The curved rear end II of said intermediate trough is nested within a curved receiving end of the connecting trough 20, which curved end conforms to the form of said curved rear end, to provide a continuous closed trough, when said intermediate trough is in various positions of articulation with respect to said connecting trough.
The intermediate trough I5 is pivotally connected adjacent its receiving and discharge ends to said connecting troughs I9 and 20, respectively, by means of bosses 22 and 23, respectively. The boss 22 is mounted in the bottom of the connecting trough 20 and depends therefrom and extends through and has bearing engagement with an annular bearing member 24 secured to and depending from the bottom of the forward end of the intermediate trough I5 (see Figure 2). Saidannular bearing member 24 is shown in Figure 2 as resting on and as being slidably movable across a supporting plate 25 of an outboard support and control member 25, extending forwardly of the base I2 and secured to and forming an outboard support and control member for the forward end of the connecting trough I9. Said outboard support and control member also extends rearwardlyfrom the boss 22 and has a bifurcated rear end portion 21 having slidable guiding engagement with opposite sides of a guide frame 2S, mounted for movement about a boss 30 mounted on the forward end of the base I2 and projecting upwardly therefrom. The inner sides of the furcations of the bifurcated portion of said support and control member are provided with inwardly facing channelled guide portions 3I, 3| forming a guide and mounting for a pair of facing supporting guides 32, 32. Said guides have V-shaped bearing faces 33, 33 having slidable engagement with corresponding recessed guides 34, 34 extending along opposite sides of said guide frame 29 and forming a guide and support means for the rear end of said outboard support and control member 26 during reciprooable movement of said control member with respect to the base I2.
The guides 32, 32 may be made of a suitable bearing material and the portions thereof ymounted within the channelled portions 3|, 3| of the furcations of the support and control member 26 are transversely slotted as indicated by reference character 35. Bolts 35, 36 having nuts thereon extend through said slotted portions to hold said guides in position in said channelled portions. Set screws 3l, 3l having lock nuts 38, 38 threaded thereon are provided to adjust said guides to take care of wear thereof.
The guide frame 2S is provided With a partialball-shaped central recessed portion, the widest portion of which opens towards its top, which has engagement with a partial-ball-shaped bearing member 39, mounted on the upright boss 3U, and held in position thereon by means of a washer 40 and a cap screw 4I, threaded in said boss and engaging the upper side of said washer. Pivotal movement of said guide frame 29 about the bearing member 39 about axes extending longitudinally of said guide frame is limited by a pair of parallel spaced runners 43, 43 having convex bottom surfaces resting on the top of the base I2, so as to permit movement of said guide frame about an axis transverse to said guide frame, so said guide frame may conform to changes in elevation of the driven trough II and the connecting trough I9, but to hold said guide frame fro-m movement about a longitudinal axis (see Figures 2 and 4) The boss 23 is mounted in the bottom of the intermediate trough i adjacent the rear end thereof, and depends therefrom. An annular bearing member 44 is mounted on said boss 23 and is held in position thereon by means of a retaining cap 45 mounted on the bottom of said boss by means of cap screws 46, 46. A guide frame 4l is journaled on said annular bearing member and has opposite facing longitudinally extending V-shaped engaging faces 49, 49 extending therealong, which are adapted to register for slidable engagement with V-shaped guides Eil, 50 formed in supporting and guide blocks 5I, 5I. Each of said supporting and guide blocks is herein shown as having an integrally formed shaft 52v extending outwardly therefrom and transversely pivoted in an adjustable support member 54 mounted o-n a plate 53, mounted on 4 and spaced upwardly from the base I2 on ribs 48, 43 extending transversely of said base. Said adjustable support member is engaged at its outer side with a set screw 55 arranged to move said support inwardly as the faces 49, 49 and 5U, 50 wear. Said set screw is threaded in an upright Iianged portion 5'3 of the plate 53, and is held in fixed relation with respect thereto by means of a lock nut 5l. A. plurality of nuts and bolts 59, 55| extending through said adjustable support member and through slotted portions of said plate (not shown) are provided to hold said adjustable support member in position. The pivotal -mounting of the support and guide blocks 50, 5E) thus affords a transversely pivoted support for the guide frame 4l, permitting the connecting trough 2o and the driving trough I0 to adapt themselves to irregularities in the mine bottom.
The jacks i3, I3 are herein shown as being Well known forms of screw jacks adapted to be interposed between opposite sides of the base I2 and the mine roof, to hold said base in position on the ground, and may be of any suitable construction. An engaging member 60 is transversely pivoted to the lower end of each of said jacks. Said engaging member has a downwardly extending stud adapted to engage an apertured portion of a hinged bearing plate 6I. Said plate is adapted to be moved into engagement with the top of an engaging member 63, upon setting of the respective jack, so as to engage a shoe 64 with the ground and hold said base in position on the ground in a manner which will hereinafter more clearly appear as this specication proceeds. Said bearing plate is pivotally mounted on a pin 65 mounted in a member 66 which is mounted in an outer enlarged portion of an annular ring 'i, on a depending shaft 58. Said bearing plate besides forming a bearing member for the jack I3, also serves to move a centering stop B9 out of position to be engaged by stops l0, l'l depending from the guide frame 41.
rThe centering stop 59 is formed on a transversely guided slidable member 1 I, slidably guided in the plate 53, beneath the guide block 5L Said stop is moved to a position to be engaged by the stops 13, i3, when the jack I3 is released from said plate, and pressure is relieved from the hinged bearing plate 6I, by means of a compression spring l2, engaging an abutment plate T3, secured to and depending from the inner end of said slidable member. A link 14 is pivotally connected between said slidable member and a, lever arm i5, depending from said hinged plate, and herein shown as being formed integrally therewith, to pivot said plate upwardly by means of said spring I2 when said jack is released from said plate.
The stops lil, 'Iii are spaced apart a distance equal to the stroke of the conveyor plus the distance between opposite engaging faces of the centering stop G9, and serve to center the base I2 with relation to the stroke of the conveyor before the setting of the jacks I3, I3 on said hinged plates, in a manner which has been shown and described in Patent No, 2,347,074, which issued to E. R: Bergmann on April 18, 1944, and which is no part of my present invention so is not herein described in detail.
The means for holding the base I2 in position on the mine bottom in a plane substantially conforming to the shaker conveyor trough line, Where the mine bottom is irregular, without exerting any bending forces on said base, includes the annular ring 3l on each side of said base and a split or sectional collar 'I6 adapted to engage each of said rings. Each of said collars is mounted in one of said rings for vertical movement with respect thereto, when initially setting the associated jack I3, and is also adapted to rmly grip said annular ring and hold it and said base from movement, when the base is in the proper relation with respect to the conveyor trough line and the associated jack has been set (see Figures 3 and 7). Said collar is herein shown as being in three sections and has a convex socket opening towards the ground, which is in the form of a portion of a sphere. Said socket is adapted to engage a partial-ball-shaped, upwardly projecting portion 'Il of the ground engaging shoe 6E, and form a universal pivotal mounting for said shoe, A partial-ball-shaped bearing member 'I9 is mounted in said shoe for universal pivotal movement with respect thereto, and has an upright sleeve Si) mounted therein and projecting upwardly therefrom, and abutting the engaging melnber 63. Said engaging member has a frusto-conical engaging face adapted to register with a corresponding face on the inside of said sectional collar, for expanding said collar when said engaging member is moved downwardly by the jack I3. A bolt 8l extends through said sleeve and through said engaging member. A washer 82 abuts the head of said bolt and also abuts the lower end of said sleeve 80 and the bearing member i9, and a nut and lock washer 83 on the opposite end of said bolt serves to connect said engaging member to said bearing member. Said bolt, besides connecting the member 63 to the shoe 4, also serves to preload a spring Btl encircling said sleeve 89, and interposed between said shoe and said engaging member 63.
The spring 84 serves to hold the engaging member 63 a fixed distance from the shoe 54 so said shoe will follow said engaging member upon downward movement of said engaging member, when said shoe is initially engaged with the ground. During this initial engaging movement of said shoe with the ground when said shoe and enga-ging member move together, there will be sufficient clearance between said engaging member and shoe and the sectional collar 'I5 so that the outward force on said sectional collar will not be suii'icient to expand said collar into clamping engagement with the inside of said annular ring. vSaid collars therefore are free to move vertically with respect to said annular rings when initially setting the jacks I3, I3. This permits said base to be positioned to substantially conform to the plane of the shaker conveyor trough line by relative movement with respect to said collars before the shoes E4, 64 are iirmly engaged with the ground by means of said jacks, as said jacks are tightened between the roof and the bearing plate Si, to initially engage said shoes with the ground. When each of said ljacks is tightened further after being initially set, the engaging member t3 will move towards the partial-ball-shaped surface of the shoe 64. This movement of the frusto-conical engaging surface of said engaging member towards the spherical surface of said shoe will expand said collar1 to clamp the inside of said annular ring 6l, and rmly hold said base in position on the ground without exerting any vertical forces thereon.
It may be seen from the foregoing that a simple and novel form of holding means has been provided ior holding a swivel of a shaker conveyor trough line in position on an uneven mine floor, without exerting any forces which would tend to bend or bind the parts of said swivel, which holding means is so arranged that when initially setting the holding jacks I3, I3 after the base I2 has been centered with respect to the stroke of the conveyor, the sectional collars 16, 'I6 may move vertically along the inner peripheries of the annular rings 6l, 61 until the respective shoes 64, Se are in rm engagement with the ground and said base has been leveled with respect to the ground. It may further be seen that tightening of said jacks will expand said collars to grip the inner peripheries of said annular rings, and that the only forces holding said base in position are the forces of expansion of the sectional collars It, 'It engaging theinner peripheries of the annular rings 6l, tl in planes substantially parallel to the supporting surface of the swivel base.
While I have herein shown and described one form in which my invention may be embodied, it will be understood that the construction thereof and the arrangement of the various parts may be altered without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, Furthermore, I do not wish to be construed as limiting my invention to the specinc embodiment illustrated, excepting as it may be limited in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a swivel for a shaker conveyor trough line, a driving trough and a driven trough, a base, means for mounting said troughs on said base for reciprocable movement with respect thereto so one may be adjusted laterally Iwith respect to the other, holding means engageable with the mine roof and bottom, for holding said base in position on the ground, and the connection between said holding means and said base being vertically slidable when initially engaging said holding means with the ground, and gripping said base in substantially horizontal directions when said holding means have i'irmly been engaged between the mine roof and bottom, to permit movement of said base relative to said holding means so as to relieve said base from twisting stresses and prevent distortion of said base when resting on an uneven mine bottom and held in position by said holding means.
2. In a swivel for a shaker conveyor trough line, a driving trough and a driven trough, a base, means for mounting said troughs on said base for reciproca-ble movement with respect thereto and permitting one trough to swing laterally with respect to the other, holding means engageable with the mine roof and bottom, for holding said base in position on the ground including a shoe engageable with the ground, a jack for engaging said shoe with the ground, and means interposed between said jack and shoe and having clamping engagement with said base, but permitting movement of said base relative to said jack upon the initial engagement of said shoe with the ground, and holding said base from movement when engaged with the ground, to hold said base in position and prevent distortion of said base when resting on an uneven mine bottom.
3. In a swivel for a shaker conveyor trough line, a driving trough and a driven trough, a base,
4means for mounting said troughs on said base for reciprocable movement with respect thereto and permitting one to swing laterally with respect to the other, holding means adapted to be interposed between the mine roof and bottom, for holding said base in position on the ground including a plurality of shoes engageable with the ground, a separate jack for engaging each of' said shoes with the ground, and expansible means slidably engaging said base, to permit movement thereof with respect to said engaging means after said shoes have initially come into engagement with the ground, to permit leveling movement of said base relative to said jacks upon engagement of said sho-es with the ground, said means being expanded by pressure exerted by said jacks, when said shoes are being rmly engaged with the ground, to grip said base in substantially horizontal directions and prevent the ground including a shoe engageable with thev ground adjacent each side of said base, a separate jack for holding each shoe in engagement with the ground, an expansible collar interposed between each jack and shoe and forming a mounting for an associated shoe, permitting movement thereof about a plurality of axes, said collar being expanded to engage said base by downward pressure of said jack, to nrmly engage said shoe with the ground, and slidably engaging said base when initially engaging said shoe `with the ground by means of said jack, so as to permit leveling of said base during the initial operation of engaging said shoes with the ground, to permit said shoes to lirmly engage the ground and hold said base in position where the ground is uneven, without distorting said base.
5. In a swivel for a shaker conveyor trough line, a driving trough and a driven trough, a base, means for mounting said troughs on said base for reciprocable movement with respect thereto and permitting one to swing laterally with respect to the other, holding means engageable with the mine roof and lwith said base for holding said base in position on the ground including a shoe engageable with the ground adjacent each side or said base, a separate jack for holding each shoe in engagement with the ground, an expansible collar interposed between each jack and shoe and forming a mounting for an associated shoe, an engaging member having inclined sides forming a seat for said jack and having engagement with said collar, for expanding said collar to frictionally engage said base upon downward movement of said associated jack, to engage said shoe with the ground, to permit slidable movement of said collar with respect to said base when initially setting said jacks and having clamping engagement with said base when said shoes are iirmly engaged Iwith the ground by means of said jacks, so said jacks may hold said base in position on an uneven mine bottom without tending to distort said base.
6. In a swivel for a shaker conveyor trough line, a driving trough and a driven trough, a base, means for mounting said troughs on said base for reciprocable movement with respect thereto and permitting one to swing laterally with respect to the other, holding means engageable with the mine roof and with said base for holding said base in position on the ground including a plurality of shoes engageable with the ground, a separate jack for holding each shoe in engagement with the ground, an expansible collar interposed between each jack and shoe and forming a mounting for an associated shoe, a frusta-conical engaging member having engagement with said collar, to expand said collar to engage said base upon engagement of said shoe with the ground, and a connection between said engaging member and said shoe arranged to permit slidable movement of said base with respect to said collar While said shoe is initially moved into engagement with the ground by means of said associated jack, and moving said collar into clamping engagement with said base upon rm engagement of said shoe with the ground so as to permit said base to be held in position and to take distorting strains from said base and prevent bending of said base when jacked in position on an uneven mine bottom.
'7. In a swivel for a shaker conveyor trough line, a driving trough and a driven trough, a base, means for mounting said troughs on said base for reciprocable movement with respect thereto and permitting one to swing laterally with respect to the other, holding means engageable with the mine roof and with said base for holding said base in position on the ground including a plurality of shoes engageable with the ground, a separate jack for holding each shoe in engagement with the ground, an expansible collar interposed between each jack and shoe and forming a mounting for an associated shoe, an engaging member having engagement with the inner periphery of said collar, for expanding said collar, to engage said collar with said base, and a connection between said engaging member and said associated shoe arranged to hold said collar and shoe in denite spaced relation when said shoe is being initially engaged with the ground, to permit vertical slidable movement of said collar with respect to said base and permit leveling of said base when initially engaging said shoes with the ground, and permitting said engaging member to move towards said shoe when rmly engaging said shoe with the ground, to expand said collar to have clamping engagement with said base, to hold said base from movement by the forces of expansion of said collar.
8. In a swivel for a shaker conveyor trough line, a driving trough and a driven trough, a base, means for mounting said troughs on said base for reciprocable movement with respect thereto and permitting one to swing laterally with respect t0 the other, holding means engageable with the mine roof and with said base for holding said base in position on the ground including a plurality of shoes engageable with the ground, a separate jack for holding each shoe in engagement with the ground, an expansible collar interposed between each jack and shoe and forming a mounting for an associated shoe, an engaging member having engagement with the inner periphery of said collar, for expanding said collar, to engage said collar with said base, and a connection between said engaging member and said associated shoe arranged to hold said collar and shoe in definite spaced relation when said shoe is being initially engaged with the ground, to permit vertical slidable movement of said collar with respect to said base and permit leveling of said base when initially engaging said shoes with the ground, and permitting said engaging member to move towards said shoe when firmly engaging said shoe with the ground, to expand said collar to have clamping engagement with said base, to
hold said base from movement by the lateral forces of expansion of said collar, said connection between said sleeve and shoe including a comp-ression spring and means for preloading said spring to yield upon a predetermined pressure :between said engaging member and said shoe.
9. In a holding means particularly adapted to hold a swivel base of a shaker conveyor trough line stationary during operation of the conveyor, a shoe movable vertically with respect to said base, a jack adapted to engage a mine roof and engage said shoe with the ground, and means interposed between said jack and shoe for gripping said base and holding said base from movement with respect to the ground when said shoe is rmly engaged with the ground by means of said jack, said means permitting vertical movement of said base relative to said jack when said shoe is initially engaged with the ground, to permit leveling of said base with respect to the ground, and holding said base without exerting any vertical forces thereon when said shoe is firmly engaged with the ground by said jack.
10. In a holding means particularly adapted to hold a swivel base of a shaker conveyor trough line stationary during operation of the conveyor, a shoe movable vertically with respect to said base, a jack adapted to engage a mine roof and engage said shoe with the ground, and an expansible collar interposed between said jack and shoe and expanded upon downward pressure of said jack to firmly engage said shoe with the ground, and to engage and hold said base from movement with respect to said jack when said shoe is firmly engaged with the ground, "and a yieldable connection between said jack and said shoe, for slidably moving said collar with respect to said base when initially engaging said shoe with the ground and expanding said collar to firmly engage said base upon further downward pressure of said jack on said shoe, to rmly engage said shoe with the ground.
11. In a holding means particularly adapted to hold a swivel b-ase of a shaker conveyor trough line stationary during operation of the conveyor, a shoe movable vertically with respect to said base, a jack adapted to engage a mine roof and engage said shoe with the ground, and an expansible collar interposed between said jack and shoe and expanded upon downward pressure of said jack to rmly engage said shoe with the ground, and to engage and hold said base from movement with respect to said jack when said shoe is rmly engaged with the ground, and means interposed between said jack and said shoe, for slidably moving said collar with respect to said base when initially engaging said shoe with the ground, and expanding said collar to firmly engage said base upon further downward pressure of said jack on said shoe, to firmly engage said sho-e with the ground, including an engaging member adapted to expand said collar upon downward movement thereof, and a yieldable member interposed between said engaging member and said shoe, said member being adapted to yield when a predetermined pressure is exerted on said engaging member by means of said jack, to permit said engaging member to move closer to said shoe and expand said collar.
12. In a holding means particularly adapted to hold a swivel base of a shaker conveyor trough line stationary during operation of the conveyor, a shoe movable vertically with respect to said base, a jack adapted to engage a mine roof and engage said shoe with the ground, and an expansible collar interposed between said jack and shoe and expanded upon downward pressure of said jack to -firmly engage said shoe with the ground, and to engage and hold said b-ase from movement with respect to said jack, when said shoe is firmly engaged with the ground, and means interposed between said jack and said shoe, for slidably moving said collar with respect to said base when initially engaging said shoe with the ground and expanding said collar to iirmly engage said base, upon further downward pressure of said jack on said shoe to firmly engage said shoe with the ground, including an engaging member having a downwardly facing inclined engaging surface adapted to engage a corresponding surface on said collar to expand said collar, and means holding said engaging member a fixed distance from said shoe, topermit movement of said collar with respect to said base when said jack is initially engaging said shoe with the ground, said means being yieldable to permit said engaging member to move closer to said shoe and expand said collar, when said jack is firmly engaging said shoe with the ground.
13. In a holding means particularly adapted to hold a swivel base of a shaker conveyor trough line stationary during operation of the conveyor, a shoe movable vertically with respect to said base, a jack adapted to engage a mine roof and engage said shoe with the ground, and an expansible collar interposed between` said jack and shoe and expanded upon downward pressure of said jack to nrmly engage said shoe with the ground, and to engage and hold said base from movement with respect to said jack, when said shoe is nrmly engaged with the ground, and means interposed between said jack and said shoe, for slidably moving said collar with respect to said base when initially engaging said shoe with the ground, and expanding said collar to firmly engage said base upon further downward pressure of said jack on said shoe to rmly engage said shoe with the ground, including an engaging member having a downwardly facing inclined engaging surface adapted to engage a corresponding surface on said collar, and a spring interposed between said engaging member and shoe for holding said engaging member and said shoe a xed distance apart when initially setting said jack and engaging said shoe with the ground, said spring being adapted to yield when a predetermined pressure is exerted on said engaging member by said jack, to permit said engaging member to move closer to said shoe and expand said collar.
14:. In a holding means particularly adapted to hold a swivel base of a shaker conveyor trough line stationary during operation of the conveyor, a shoe movable vertically with respect to said base, a jack adapted to engage a mine roof and engage said shoe with the ground, an expansible collar interposed between said jack and shoe, said collar having la downwardly opening socket adapted to form a universal pivotal mounting for said shoe, an engaging member having a downwardly facing inclined engaging surface adapted to engage a corresponding internal surface on said collar, and yieldable means interposed between said engaging member and said shoe for holding said engaging member in fixed spaced relation with respect to said shoe when said shoe is initially engaged with the ground, to permit vertical movement of said collar, with respect to said base, said yieldable means being adapted to yield upon the exertion of -a predetermined pres- 11 sure on said'engaging member by means of said jack, to permit said engaging member to move towards said shoe and expand said collar to grip said base.
15. In a holding means particularly adapted to hold a swivel base of a shaker conveyor trough line stationary during operation of the conveyor, a shoe movable vertically with respect to said base, a jack adapted to engage a mine roof and engage said shoe with the ground, an expansible collar interposed between said jack and shoe, said collar having a downwardly opening socket adapted to form a universal pivotal mounting for said shoe, an engaging member having a downwardly facing frusto-conical engaging surface adapted to engage a corresponding internal surface on said co11ar, and a compression spring interposed between said engaging member and said shoe for holding said engaging member in xed spaced relation with respect to said shoe when said shoe is initially engaged with the ground, to permit vertical movement of said co1- Iar with respect to said base, said spring being adapted to yield upon the exertion of a predetermined pressure on said engaging member by means of said jack, to permit said engaging member to move towards said shoe and expand said collar to grip said base.
