VALENTINE H. HALLOOK, OF QUEENS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN A. BEYER, OF BROOKLYN, NFY YORK. j
PACKING-RING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,306, dated May 31, 1881.
Application filed February 28, 1881. (No model.)
- io for example, the plungers used in damper-regulators, as shown and described in Letters Patent of the UnitedStates granted to me December 9,1879, No. 222,489.
The particular class of packin g-rin gs to which 1'5 my invention relates comprise a metallic internally screw-threaded and shouldered outer ring, a iianged packin g-ring of leather or otherf? similar materiahrestin g on the shoulder of the outer ring by means ot its iange, so as to hug zo the plunger, and a metallic externally screwthreaded inner ring fitted into the outer ring, for clamping and retaining' the packing-ring in its position. One of the conditions necessary to the successful working of the plunger z5 is that the bend of the packing-ring shall not be crowded against it in the angle formed by the lower end of the inner ring and the side ot' the plunger, and the primary object of my invention is to preserve this condition 5 to which end it consists in the employment of an annular tapering lip or iiange projecting from the lower end of the inner ring into the packingring and interposing itself between the bend ofthe packin g-rin g and the plunger. Said annula-r tapering` lip or flange is adjustable, and
byv this feature it is adapted to the purpose of" regulating the' area or portion of the packingring that comes in contact with the plunger.
This invention is illustrated in the accom.- 40 panyin g drawings,in which Figure] represents avertical cross-section. Fig. 2 is a plan or top View. Fig. 3 illustrates a modification of the gage-ring.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. The letter A designates the metallic outer ring; B, the leather or other packing-ring; C, the metallic inner or clamping ring, and D the annular tapering lip or liange.
rlhe outer ring, A, is provided with au internal shoulder, c, and with a screw-thread both 5o above and below the shoulder, the lower thread being a means for attaching the outer ring to the end of the cylinder containing the plunger, for which the whole constitutes a packing. vOther means, however, can be used for attach- 5 5 ing the ring A to the cylinder.
The packing-ring B is provided with a flange,
f, whereby it rests on the shoulder cof the outer ring, this liange being formed by pressure, in a well-known manner. 6o
Theinner ring, C, is provided with an external screw-thread, corresponding to the thread of the outer ring, and it is secured in the outer ring by th at means, so as to clamp the packingring` B and hold the same iirmly in its position.
The lip or ange D tapers to a point, or nearly so, in an outer direction, and it projects from the lower end of the inner ring, O, into the packing-ring B, so as to interpose itself between the bend of the packing-ring and the 7o plunger, thus leaving only a straight portion of the packing-ring come in contact with the plunger, which insures its successful operation.
In the example shown in the drawings in Figs.
1 and 2 the lip or lange D is made independ- 75 ent from the other parts, and is secured within the inner ring, O, while in Fig. 3 it is represented as being formed in 011e piece with the inner ring. The position ofthe lower edge of the lip or liange D determines the effective 8o area of the packing-ring, only that portion thereof which is left free beyond or below such edge being permitted to come in contact with the plunger. Now, in order to allow this area Y of the packing-ring to be regulated according S5 to its width, the lip or ange D is made adjustable relatively to the free edge of the packing-ring, and in this example the desired purpose is accomplished simply by securing the lip or flange D within the inner ring, O, by 9o means of a screw-thread, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a metallic internallythreaded and shouldered outer ring for attachment to the end of a cylinder, a flanged packing-ring resting on the shoulder of the outer rin'r b i means of its lane a metallic exterring, and an annular tapering lip or flan ge adnally-threaded inner ring titted into the outer justably seeured to the inner rinp,` and projectring, and an annular tapering lip or llange projecting from the inner ring into the packingring, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of a metallic internallythreaded and shouldered outer ring for attachment to the end of a cylinder, a Banged packing-ring resting ou the shoulder of the outer ring by means of its flange, a metallic exten nally-threaded inner ring fitted into the outer ing into the packing-ring, substantially as 15 shown an d described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
