Description

H. C. ZARO coLosmoMY APPLIANCE Filed Dec. 1'7, 1943 June 24, 1947.
' INVNTOR. HENRY CZARO nmw' WIMIIIIIIIHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIH Patented June 24, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COLOSTOMY APPLIANCE Henry C. Zaro, New York, N. Y. Application December 1'7, 1943, Serial No. 514,643 2 Claims. (01. 128-283) My invention relates to a new and improved colostomy appliance or device. The principal obiect thereof is to provide a colostomy appliance which has impermeable disposable means whereby the device can always be maintained in a sanitary usable condition.
Another object of my invention is to provide a colostomy appliance or device having comfortable holding means whereby the device may be securely. and comfortably supported around the body of the wearer.
Another object of my invention is to provide a unitary and compact colostomy device which is especially adaptable and efficient for the purpose for which it is intended.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a new and improved colostomy unit which is comparatively light in weight, not cumbersome, and so constructed and assembled thatit will be kept sanitary and comfortable at all times.
Other objects of my invention will be stated in the annexed description and drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment thereof.
Fig. l .is a front elevational view of the improved device, the supporting straps being shown in extended position and partially broken away.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. v
Fig. 3 is a rear view of the device, shown partially broken away to more fully illustrate the component parts thereof, the supporting straps not being shown for the convenience of illustration.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of receptacle member.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the complete device with the supporting straps shown in closed position.
As shown in the said drawings, the device comprises a holder member H] of generally rectangular shape. The said holder has its exposed faces covered by rubber or a rubberized material or fabric or any other suitable impervious material. Said holder IU may be formed of a sheet of heavy rubber or it may be constructed with a filter of any suitable flexible material with the exposed faces of the said filler covered by rubber or rubberized material. As shown in Fig. 1, a marginal binding B is secured by stitching to the marginal edges of holder in to present a neat and finished appearance to the holder.
Holder I0 is provided with a central opening. A depending receptacle member ll, closed at its bottom end, is secured to holder [0 adjacent the marginal edge of the opening. As shown in Fig. 2,
the disposable the open end of receptacle I l is provided with an annular marginal edge which is secured by an adhesive or in any suitable manner intermediate the front and rear rubber faces of holder l0. Receptacle H is made of the same material that holder I0 is formed of, preferably any impervious and impermeable material. It will be noted that receptacle H is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of holder in and extends substantially below the bottom longitudinal edge thereof. In effect, said member H is an extension of holder Ill. Member H can therefore be formed integrally with holder iii if made of rubber. If made of leather or the like, member H can be secured to holder ID as shown in Fig. 2. The open end of receptacle H is circular in cross-section and said receptacle ll becomes rectangular in crosssection as it extends downwardly.
For convenience, the face of the holder ill from which receptacle ll projects, is designated as the front face of said holder Ill, the face having the opening is designated as the rear face thereof.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, a rubber sheet 13 is superposed on the rear face of holder IE], said sheet [3 being provided with a central opening which registers with the opening in holder H3. Said member 13 is substantially of the same size, shape and contour as the rear face of holder I0.
In the assembled position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, V
the rear face of sheet l3 abuts the rear face of holder ID.
A pad of cellu-cotton I4 is superposed on the front face of rubber sheet [3, said pad being provided with a plurality of centrally located radially disposed serrated incisions extending therethrough. The purpose of providing pad [4 is to provide absorbent means in the event of seepage or the like and to render the device more comfortable for the wearer. The rear face of pad I4 abuts the front face of rubber sheet i3.
Members l3 and M are assembled with holder l0 and are removably secured to said holder ID by the disposable receptacle member 15. As shown in Fig. 3, the receptacle [5 is substantially identical in configuration and size with holder I!) and its extension ll. Receptacle I5 is provided with a downwardly depending portion l6 and a collar H which is integral with the same the plane of said collar being substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of said depending portion.
In the assembled position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the front face of collar l5 abuts the front face of the cellu-cotton pad l4. As is clearly shown in Fig. 2, the serrated incisions formed in said cellu-cotton pad M are forced into receptacle II when portion ceptacle member I is passed through the same. In this manner said serrations are located intermediate members II and I6 (see Fig. 2) and form a barrier to prevent escape of body gases, odors, noises, etc. Portion I6 also passes through the opening in rubber sheet l3 and extends into receptacle member Hi, thus retaining members l3 and [4 on the holder [0.
Disposable receptacle member I5 is preferably made of any waterproof paper or any similar and impermeable material so that after. the device is used, the said paper receptacle can be removed and discarded and a fresh one inserted so that the device can be maintained sanitary at all times,
As shown in Figs. 1 and 5, the device is provided with a plurality of longitudinal straps l8, each being provided with the usual buckles I 9;- whereby the device can be worn around" and seowed to the body or the wearer; The said straps l8 are slidably-secure'd to holder Hi by means of the transverse strips zil whi'cn are secured to the front face of'holder HF by stitching the same ad jacent the longitudinal edges of said straps; thus forining'a plurality of loops in which sa-idstraps are sli'dably held; These loops may be integral with holder l0 and can be formed by making a number of alin'ed incisions in the front wall thereof.
In order not toinconvenience thewearer, buckles IQ are of such a size that they may be slipped under theloops formed 'in strips 29, as is clearly shown in Fig, 5. In this manner, there are no exposed metal" parts to annoy the wearer.
As a further means of comfort tothe wearer, I form the central portion of each of straps l8 of a resilient, yieldable-and stretchable material 25, such as anysui tabl'e elastic material or fab ric. This afjords additional comfort for the back of the wearer. In order to further enhancethe wearers comfort, portions 21 are positioned to Hi of the disposable re- 1 overlap each other when the device is secured to the body of the wearer.
I provide a, plurality of straps I 8 (preferably three) so as to be certain that the device will be held in close contact with the body. This is important to prevent the escape of any undesirable body gases, odors, noises, etc. To assure a close fit, I provide a strap adjacent the upper and lower longitudinal edges of holder Ill.
The entire device when worn will not be cumbersome or conspicuous in View of the configuration of receptacle member II.
I claim:
I- A colostomy appliance comprising a holder having an opening, a receptacle secured to said holder and dependin from said opening, a replac'eable. receptacle having a flat collar surrounding an opening, and having an excrement receiving bag depending. from said latter opening through said first opening into said first receptacle, an absorbent pad' having an opening and having a fiat part surrounding said Patter opening and being positioned between said holder and said collar and having a tubular part ex'-- tendin from said latter opening into said first receptacle, said pad being separated by said bag from any received excrement, and means supporting said holder and adapted to secure said appliance to the body of the wearer.
2. A colostomy appliance as claimed in claim 1, said tubular part having radially disposed serrated incisions.
