Application August 20, 1945, Serial No. &11,604
1 Claim.
The invention relates to a pump rod protector, and more especially to a steel sleeve for a mud pump rod.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a protector of this character, wherein a mud pump rod is housed for the protection thereof to increase the life of the same, as it eliminates difficulties due to crystallization and breakage, until worn out, in the continued use of the same.
Another object of the invention is the provision oi a protector of this character, wherein its Construction is novel and unique in the application thereof to the pump rod, it being fully protective against undue wear and breakage, and is susceptible of easy and quick application and removal.
A further object of the invention is the pro- Vision of a protector of this character, wherein it functions to eliminate excessive wear on the central portion of the pump rod, as employed in drilling oil Wells or the like, the protector being easily applied and removed with dispatch.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a protector of this character, which is simple in its Construction, thoroughly reliable and ecient for the purposes intended thereof, strong, durable, it being a reinforcement to the pump rod, assuring increased life thereto, and greater wearing qualities, and is inexpensive to manufacture and install.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the features of Construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which shows the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical section View through apump casing showing the pump rod with its protector constructed in accordance with the invention Figure 2 is an elevation of the pump rod with the protector shown in vertical section;
Figure 3 is a sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several Views in the drawing.
Referrng to the drawing in detail, A designates generally a portion of a pump casing, as used in oil well drilling, it being of the ordinary well known Construction, having a lateral outlet nipple lll, while provided at the uppermost end of this casing is a pump rod packing gland ll, of any approved type. Through this gland ll works the pump rod l2, having at its lowermost end a nut carrying tapered portion 13 for a head M, the nut being denoted at !5 for the fastening of the head in place against a shoulder l6, as provided on said rod !2.
The upper end of the rod [2 has a threaded area ll for a locking nut [8 working against a Washer 19, which plays against a protective sleeve 20 snugly ftted about the said rod 12 between it and the shoulder IS upon such rod. The sleeve 20 embraces the rod |2 and operates therewith through the gland H and its packing '21, so as to protect the said rod against wear, the latter being greatest intermediate of its length, in the operation of the pump for oil drilling purposes.
What is claimed is:
A rod protector of the kind described, comprising a solid drill rod, threads on said rods at each of its opposite end portions, a shoulder formed integral with said rod adjacent one of its threaded end portions, a tapered portion formed integral with said shoulder and said rod intermediate said shoulder and said last mentioned threaded end portion, said tapered portion at its upper end being larger in diameter than said rod and at its lower end of the same size as said rod, a head on said tapered portion, a tubeform sleeve embracing the rod between the shoulder thereon and the threaded portion most remote therefrom, and means on the threaded portions for holding the sleeve and head fixed against the shoulder on said rod.
