WATER-CLOSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,287, dated May 31, 1881.
Application filed February 19, 1381.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tater-Closets; and I do hereby declaro the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section, partly in elevation, ot' my improvements. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of devices for lifting the sealing-cap of the water-closet bowl; and Figs. 4 and 5 are detail elevations of the same, drawn to an enlarged scale, illustrating the different positions they occupy when the sealing-cap is down and up respectively.
My invention has for its object to providea water-closet with means for etfectually excluding the escape of noxious gases and efuvia, whether from sewers, waste-pipes, traps, or the bowl itself.
My invention consists in the combination, with a water-closet having a bowl provided with a trough for containing mercury or other liquid or packing at or upon its upper edge, or having a valve-seat in such location, of a cap or valve constructed so as to seal in such trough or form a tight joint 011 such seat, said cap or valve being constructed and combined with operating mechanism so as to be moved upwardly and laterally to uncover the bowl when access to the latter is required.
My invention further consists in certain details of construction and combination hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents the bowl of a water-closet, said bowl beingformed with an annular or endless trough or channel, c, around its upper edge, designed for the reception of mercury or other liuid substance to form a seal or rubber ring, or other material to form a packing or elastic valveseat.
B represents a cap, which fits over the top of the bowl A and has a continuous flange or rib, b, adapted and designed to enter the trough a, and dip in the mercury or other fluid therein, or to press into the rubber or other packing (Model.)
and form a seal or perfectly-tight joint, which will prevent the escape of gases or effluvia from the bowl or any of the conduits below the latter. Said bowl is designed to be uncovered by a compound movement of the cap, the latter being lifted vertically to permit the flange b to clear the trough t and then swung laterally. Various mechanical appliances may he used for accomplishing said movement, and hence I do not limit my invention to any one in particular. I have shown one, however, suitable for the purpose, which I shall now proceed to describe.
In the accompanying drawings, C represents a casting, in the form of a bracket, secured by screws c to the side of the bowl A. Said bracket affords bearin gs at c to a vertical shaft, D, and at c2 to a counter or horizontal shaft, E. At its upper end the shaft D is fastened to the cap B, so that both said cap and shaft shall move together. At its lower end the shaft D has fastened to it an arm, D', carrying a toothed segment, d.
The shaft E has at one end a rock-arm or lever, e, and at its opposite end a toothed segment, e', which gears with the segment @and communicates motion to the latter and to the shaft l) when said shaft E is rocked. Said shaft E also carries a cam, e, which may be separate from the segment e', or integral with the latter, if desired. The shaft D is supported on the periphery of the cam e2, so that when the shaftE is rocked said sh aft' D will be caused to slide in its bearings c.
F represents the hinged lid of the watercloset seat Gr, and f a rod attached thereto and forming a connection with the lever e.
The operation is as follows: Normally the lid F being down the cap B covers the bowl A and forms a tight joint therewith, effectually preventing the escape of all gases or effluvia therefrom. When the lid F is raised the shaft E is caused to rock through the medium ofthe rodf and lever e. This causes the cam c2 to lift the shaft D, and with it the cap B. When the flange b of the latter has cleared the top ofthe bowl, or risen wholly out of the trough c, the segment e comes into engagement with the segment d, producing a rotation ofthe shaft D and causing the cap B to be swung clear off the bowl, leaving the latter completely uncov- IOO ered. This movement of the cap B is effected l for the reception of mercury or other uid, or
by simply lifting the hinged seat-lid F, the reverse movement or return of the cap B to its position as a cover to the bowl A being accomplished by closing or letting down said lid. To afford room for the cap to one side of the bowl within the closet-casing said bowl is designed to be of au oval or approximate shape and the cap of corresponding contour.
The hole or opening g in the casing-seat Gf should be of less diameter than the top of the bowl A, as shown, said seat thus forming a covering or shed for the mercury-trongh when the cap is swung O' said trough, thereby protectin g the contents oi' the latter from contact with person or clothing, or from being fouled by accident or carelessness.
The bowl A may be enameled, or it may be east with lugs a to afford supports for a porcelain bowl to be tted therein, if desired.
What I claim as my invention isl. The combination, with awa-ter-closet bowl having ou or around its upper edge a trough a packing to form a valve-seat, of a cap or valve provided with avertical spindle or axis of rotation, whereby it is designed and adapted to form a cover for said bowl, and to be removed therefrom by being lifted and swung, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a water-elosetbowl having a duid-trou gh or packing-receptacle on or around its upper edge, of a cap or cover for said bowl, having a flange or rib correspondingr to the bowl-trough, and adapted and designed to enter the same, and means, substantially as described, for moving said cap vertically and swinging it laterally, as and for the purpose Set forth.
