GUSTAVUS DOERHOEFER AND BASIL DOERHOEFER, OF LOUISVILLE, KY.
HIGH AND LOW WATER INDICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,284, dated May 31, 1881,
Application filed March 26, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GUSTAVUS DOERI-IOEF- ER and BASIL DOERHOEFER, citizens of the United States, resident at Louisville, in the county of J eiferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in High and Low Vt'ater Indicators; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g, and to letters or ti gures ot'reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
The figure represents a perspective view of the device with a side removed.
This invention relates to improvements in high and low water indicators.
The invention consists in the construction hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, A represents a steam chamber, of cast iron, of the shape shown, closed on all sides, and which is tightly fitted into the upper wall of the boiler B by the cross-shaped tube 0, having opening 0 into the chamber and openings 0 c 0 into the boiler, c registering with 0, but smaller. The steam in the boiler passes through openings 0 c and 0 into the chamber.
Shaft D and to one side thereof guides E E are firmly attached to one end of the chamber, eyes 6 c of the guides being on line with holes 0 c.
fis a hole in the top, on the same line, leadin g into the hollow cap F.
G is a movable shaft passing through holes f, eyes 6 c, and openings 0 c, and having a hollow copper float, g, on its lower end.
H is a yoke, having one eye, h, through which shaft G passes, made fast thereto by pin h,
(No model.)
and another eye, h through which shaft D loosely passes. 111 its middle is a hole, h arranged transverse to the two eyes. In this hole freely moves the end i of a lever, I,which is pivoted to a fulcrum, K, and has pivoted to its other end a valve, 1', situated in a seat, L, in the end of the chamber, in the middle of which seat is a hole, l, leading into a tube, m, carrying a whistle, M, and controlled by a cock, m. The valve t" is loosely connected with the lever, so as to have sufficient play, and is kept tightly pressed against the valve-seat by the steam in the chamber. I
As the float in the boiler is raised and lowered by the height of the water its movement gives a corresponding movement to the valve through the movable shaft and lever, and either high or low water is indicated by the escape of steam through hole I, which sounds an alarm on the whistle.
The ratio in the lengths of the arms of the lever depends upon the sweep to be given to the valve for exposing the opening in the seat and for the difference to be allowed between high and low water.
We claim- In a water-indicator, the combination of the steam -chamber A, communicating with the whistle M, valve-seat L, with opening I, lever I, carrying valve i, yoke H, stationary shaft D, shaft G, running in guides and having float g at its lower end, and the tube 0, all contructed and arranged substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
GUSTAVUS DOERHOEFER.
111 BASIL DOERHOEFER.
