TANK-RAIL AND ADJUSTABLE BEARING FOR SPINDLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,257, dated May 31, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BRIERLEY, of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tank-Rails and Adjustable Bearings for Spindles, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken through the line as m, Fig. 1, the spindle being in elevation. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view taken through the line y y, Fig. 2.
The object of this invention is to furnish tank-rails and bearings for the spindles of spinning-frames, twisters, and other machines, so constructed that the spindles may be kept lubricated without being liable to heat the oil, that the wear of the spindles can be taken up without moving the spindle or its support, and that the spindles may be centered in the spinning-rings withoutmoving the rings or the ring-rails.

A represents the rail that supports a set of spindles. The rail A is made hollow, and is covered with a plate, B, secured to the upper edges of its sides by screws. The rail A B is designed to receive oil for lubricating the spindles, and should be provided with apertures for pouring in the oil and with stop-cocks or other means for drawing off the oil,which appliances are not shown in the drawings.
0 isa spindle, the foot of which revolves upon the bottom of the rail A or in a recess in the said bottom. The spindle 0 passes up through a hole in the top plate or cover, B, of the rail A, and revolves in a tubular bearing or bolster, D, inserted in the said hole. The spindle O is tapered from its foot to its point, and the bolster D is correspondingly tapered on the inside to fit the taper of the spindle. The middle part of the cavity of the bolster D is enlarged, as shown in Fig. 2, to form a chamber to receive the oil that is carried up by the revolving spindle G.
Upon the outer surface of the bolster D is cut a screw-thread, to fit into a screw-thread cut in the cavity of the nut or collar E, and 'to in the usual way, to receive the driving-band.
With this construction the lower part of the spindle (J revolves in an oil-tank, so that it will be kept lubricated, and in which the quantity of oil is so great that the oil will not be liable to become heated. WVith this construc- 6 tion, also, as the spindle O wears the bolster D can be screwed down by loosening thejamnut F, so as to take up the wear and keep a snug fit. The jam-nut F is then turned down against the collar E to look the bolster D in place.
The upper end of the bolster D may be countersunk, as shown in Fig. 2, to receive any oil that may work out at the upper end of the said bolster.
I am aware that a spindle-rail containing within itself a series of vertical chambers for the reception of the spindle-bolsters, and connected by an oil-duct, is old, and such I do not wish to be understood as claiming, broad'ly,as
of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.
