SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 242,184, dated May 31, 1881. Application filed March 3,1881. (No model.)

Be it known that I, CHARLES M. BLYDEN- BURGH, of Riverhead, county of Suffolk. and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in WVagon-Hounds; andIdo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, ref- 7 erence being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in the construction of hounds for bracing the hind axle and front bolster of a wagon.

It consists in forming the hound at each end of the running-gear of a single curved piece whose ends are split in a horizontal plane and spread apart to form an elastic supportfor the wagon-body, and in interposing spiral or other forms of auxiliary springs between the divided ends of the double hound to increase their elasticity.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of the coupling-pole, rear axle, and bolster-bars ot a wagon fitted with my improved hounds. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a rear elevation, thereof.

A is the reach or conplingpole, secured centrally to the front bolster, B, in the usual manner.

O G are respectively curved hounds, attached centrally to the coupling-pole and serving to brace the front bolster and rear axle. These hounds are constructed of a single piece of wood or metal bent in a semicircle, and whose ends are split longitudinally and horizontally nearly to the center and then spread apart, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 0f the drawings. The lower divided ends of the hind hounds, G, are secured to the rear axle, P, and the upper ends thereof to the rear bolster, 1t, supporting the wagon-body, while the upper and lower divided ends of the front hounds, O,

are secured to a pair of bolster-bars, S B, of

which the lower one, B, rests upon the front axle or its fifth-wheel, and the upper, S, sup ports the wagon-body. When the divided ends are not sufficiently rigid small blocks D D are interposed in the forks of the split hounds, as shown in Fig. 2, and when not sufiiciently elastie of themselves spiral springs E E may be inserted between these ends, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The center of each of the hounds is mortised to embrace partially the couplingpole A. The front hounds, G, are rigidly secured to the pole, but the hind hounds, O, are connected thereto by means of a coupling pin or bolt, F, to permit an extension or contraction of the running-gear. This coupling pin or bolt F drops vertically through the hound and pole, and hence is not readily displaced.

The h0unds thus made of a single piece of bent wood or of steel plates are strong and durable, and their curved shape peculiarly adapts them to their special function.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with the reach and axle or bolster ot' a vehicle, of a double-curved hound, O 0, split or forked at each end to afford elastic support to the body of a vehicle, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a double or two-armed wagon-hound, 0, formed in one single curved piece, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.

3. The combination ofinterposed springs E E with the divided ends of a wagon-hound, O, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.

4. The combination, with the axle and coupling pole of a vehicle, of a forked or split wagon-hound whose divergent endsare adapted to extend between the axle and bed or body of the vehicle to afford an elastic support for the latter, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
