heel' end" of the sheet isa move therewith, as disclosed in the previously mentioned Letters Patent, are members I6 which may be termed tacker blocks, each of these members being provided with a plurality of passages (not herein shown) from which tacks are driven through the wipers to fasten the upper. Movable with the tacker blocks and the wipers are driver blocks l2 each provided with a plurality of tack drivers l4 for driving the tacks, the driver blocks being movable downwardly in guideways HS in the tacker blocks to operate the drivers. Such downward movements are imparted to the driver blocks by spring-operated means not herein shown but fully disclosed in the above-mentioned Letters Patent, such means being connected to upstanding headed projections IS on the driver blocks.
For purposes of this invention there is secured by screws 26 to the front-end portion of each of the tacker blocks 16 a bracket 22 which, in cooperation with the front face of the tacker block, provides a guideway 24' for a vertically movable knife carrier 26. At its lower end the knife carrier has a horizontally extending portion 28 provided with a T-shaped guideway 36 on which is mounted a knife holder 32. Secured to this knife holder by a bolt 34 and a nut 36 is a knife 38 which in response to downward movement of the knife carrier 26 slits the margin of the outer layer 1) of the upper materials at the front end of the heel seat. As shown particularly in Fig. 5, a portion of the knife 38 fits into a recess in the holder 32 to prevent any turning of the knife about the bolt 34, and formed also in the knife is a vertical slot 40 (Fig. 4) through which the bolt extends, this slot permitting vertical adjustment of the knife with respect to the holder. The lower face 42 (Fig. 3) of the holder is arranged to engage the margin of the upper forwardly of the heel seat to limit the depth of the cut of the knife.
Threaded in the upper end of each knife carrier 26 is a Vertical rod 44 having a nut 46 threaded on its upper end, and between this nut and a washer 48 engaging the upper end of the bracket 22 and of the tacker block I6 is a spring 56. This spring holds the knife carrier initially at the limit of its upward movement determined by engagement of its horizontal portion 28 with the lower end of the bracket 22 and returns the carrier to that position after its downward movement. The horizontal portion of the knife carrier is extended rearwardly to a position underlying the front-end portion of the driver block l2, the lower portion of the tacker block W as used heretofore being cut back to permit this arrangement, as is also a portion of the underlying wiper 8. Arranged to engage the top of this rearward- 1y extending portion of the knife carrier is the lower end of a plunger 52 mounted in a recess in the driver block l2 and provided at its upper end with a rod 54 extending upwardly through a partition 56 in the driver block into another recess in the block above the partition. Between the partition 56 and an enlarged head on the lower end of the plunger 52 is a spring 58. Threaded on the rod 54 above the partition 56 is a nut 66, and. between this nut and a screw 62 threaded in the driver block is another spring 64. It will be evident that the tendency of both springs 58 and 64 is to move the plunger 52 downward relatively to the driver block l2 as far as permitted by engagement of the nut 66 with the partition 56, and when downward movement is imparted to the driver block to operate the tack drivers M, the block acts through the two springs and the plunger 52 to impart downward movement also to the knife carrier26against the resistance of the spring 56 and thus to cause the knife 38 to slit the upper. When the downward movement of the knife carrier is stopped by engagement of the lower face 4'2 of the knife 32 with the margin of the upper, the springs 58 and 64 may yield to permit continued movement of the driver block until the tacks are fully driven. The two springs 58 and 64, both of which perform the same function, are provided because of the inconvenience of providing in the driver block a single spring of sufiicient strength through which to operate the knife carrier.
Secured on the top of the front end portion of the horizontal extension 28 of each knife carrier 26 is an L-shaped bracket 66 in which is rotatably mounted a screw 68 held against lengthwise movement by engagement of the bracket with a knob 10 and a flange 12 on the screw. The screw is threaded in the knife holder 32 and. extends through the previously mentioned slot 46 in the knife 38. It will therefore be evident that by the two screws 68 the knife holders 32 may be adjusted each independently of the other along the guideways 30 to vary. as desired the locations of the slits in the margin of the upper in operating on shoes of different sizes.
