This invention relates to outside calipers, the main object being to provide a calipers arranged for calibration of shafting or other round surfaces and having means for visually showing the measurement obtained in inches, tenths and thousandths, or similar relatively close iigures.
A further object is to provide a calipers as above, in which the measurement indicator is in the general form of a watch or clock face, making it extremely easy to read any measurement obtained.

Referring to the numerals of reference on the drawings, the calipers comprise a pair of caliper legs I and 2, formed with ball shaped terminals 3 on their outer end for engagement with the work.
The legs are pivoted at their othe1` ends in spaced relation as at 4 in a cylindrical case 5 adjacent the periphery thereof. The free end portions of the legs project thru an arcuate slot 6 in the case. The inner ends of the legs are provided with segmental gears 'I which are concentric with pivots 4 and constantly mesh with each other and cause the legs I and 2 to move simultaneously.
Within the case, leg I is formed with an extension 8 beyond its pivot 4, which carries an arcuate rack gear 9 meshing with a pinion Il) xed on a shaft II journaled in a frame I2 within the case.
A gear I3 iixed with shaft II pinion I4 xed on another shaft I5 journaled in frame I 2. A gear I6 xed on shaft I5 meshes with a pinion I1 mounted on an actuator shaft I8 journaled in frame I2 centrally of case 5.
The outer face of one frame member I2 is formed with a dial plate I9 thru which shafts I I, I and I 8 project; the shafts ends being provided with indicator lingers or needles 20, 2| and 22 respectively. These needles read on dials 23, 24 and 25 on the dial plate which are graduated in inches tenths and thousandths respectively; it being understood that the various pinions and gears in the train above described, including gears 1, are so relatively proportioned that with relative movement between legs I and 2, the distance between terminals 3 will be correctly indicated on the dials.
In order to turn the legs so as to separate or meshes with a 2 bring the heads 3 together, shaft I8 is provided with a finger knob 2B on its end opposite the dial plate and outside the case. In order to gain opl erating speed, so as to provide a quicker leg movement than could otherwise be obtained, a ilywheel 21 is iixed on shaft I8 within the case. All moving parts of the operating, control and indicating mechanism, except the knob, are enclosed in the case the dial plate and needles being covered by a transparent disc 28.
While the form of mechanism herein shown and described is admirably adapted to fuliill the objects primarily stated, it is to be understood that it is not intended to confine the invention to the one form of embodiment herein disclosed, as it is susceptible of embodiment in various forms, all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
Whatis claimed is:
1. Calipers of the character described having in combination a case, a pair of legs pivotally supported at one end Within said case and having work-engaging portions projecting from the latter, a plurality of separate indicating dials carried by said case each dial having data thereon indicating predetermined increments of measurement, the data on each dial being proportioned to the data of all of the other dials, a train of gearing mounted within the case and including members concentrically mounted relative to the respective dials, pointers for the respective dials, each operatively connected with said train of gearing and movable over the dial, an actuator shaft for oneof said pointers, said actuator shaft having adriving engagement with said train of gearing, said shaft having an extension projected through the case to the exterior thereof, so as to be accessible for manual operation, and means operated by rotative adjustments of said actuator shaft for imparting concurrent pivotal movements to said arms.
2. Calipers of the character described having in combination a case, a pair of' legs pivotally supported at one end within said case and having Work-engaging portions projecting from the latter, a plurality of separate indicating dials carried by said case each dial having data thereon indicating predetermined increments of measurement, the data on each dial being proportioned to the data of all of the other dials, a train of gearing mounted within the case and including members concentrically mounted relative to the respective dials, pointers for the respective dials, each operatively connected with said train of gearing and movable over the dial,
a fly-wheel connected with said train of gearing, manually operable means for imparting rotative movement to said train of gearing, and means ac tuated by said train of gearing for imparting concurrent proportional adjusting movements to said legs.
