Application February 12, 1945, Serial No. 577,460
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to wire cutting and stripthe guide and blade being secured on the inner surface of one of the handles of theplier-type wire cutter, means being provided on the cooperating handle of the tool for pressing the Wire being stripped, into engagement with the blade, so that when the tool is drawn over a length of Wire, the insulation will be longitudinally split and readily removed from the wire.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 is an elevational view of a wire-cutting tool constructed in accordance with the invention, illustrating the insulation-stripping device as mounted on the free ends of the handles.
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-4! of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3, illustrating the blade as cutting the insulation between the wires of a dual wire conductor.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the referadjacent to the free end thereof, as clearly shown by the drawing. This guide I is disposed at an acute angle with respect to the longitudinal side edges of the handle, so that when a wire is positioned therein, the wire will extend away from the tool, so that the tool may be readily grasped and drawn along the wire, to accomplish the purpose of the invention, without interference.
Disposed within the bottom of the guide, and arranged in parallel relation with the side edges of the guide l, is a blade 8 which is formed with an upper curved cutting edge 9 so constructed that it will cut into the insulation of the wire bein stripped, as the tool is drawn over the wire.
The reference character 10 indicates a pressure ring which is secured to the inner surface of the opposite handle, the pressure ring being so disposed-that it will engage a wire held within the guide, and force the wire into the guide, as the handles of the tool are squeezed. Due to the construction of the pressure ring, it will be seen that only a small portion of the ring contacts with the wire being stripped, and which in the present showing is indicated by the reference character A, to the end that friction between the pressure ring it and the wire will be reduced to the minimum, over an elongated pressure member commonly used for accomplishing this result.
The pressure ring It is also disposed at an acute angle with respect to the handles, and arranged so that the side edges of the pressure ring will be parallel with the upper edges of the guide I, to insure against binding between ence character 5 designates the handles of a plier type wire-cutting tool used by electricians, the blades of the tool being indicated by the reference character 6.
The wire stripper, forming the essence of the present invention, embodies a guide I which comprises a length of metal curved longitudinally, providing a trough-like structure, the guide being secured to the inner surface of one of the handles,
the wire and guide, when pressure is directed to the wire in stripping the insulation therefrom.
When it is desired to strip the insulation from an electric wire, it is only necessary to position the guide directly under the wire. Pressure is now directed to the wire when grippingthe handles, through the pressure ring I!) which forces the wire against the blade which passes through the insulation. As the tool is drawn over the wire, the insulation will be split longitudinally and may be readily removed.
What is claimed is:
A wire insulation cutting tool, embodying pivotally connected members, an elongated trough-like guide member disposed adjacent to the free end of oneof said pivoted members and being carried by the inner surface thereof, a
cutting blade disposed within the guide member at a, point intermediate the ends thereof, and a pressure ring carried by the cooperating pivoted member, the sides of said pressure ring being parallel to the sides of the guide member, presenting a curved friction surface adapted to engage the wire held within the guideway, whereby said blade is forced into the insulation of the wire when the pivoted members are forced together, cutting the insulation.
