Description

W. A. JAMES.
' I Garpenters Gage.
No. 24 2, 096. Pat ented May 24,1881.

UNITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. JAMES, OF GALENA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO JESSE Gr. CROOKS AND CHRISTOPHER HERON, OF SAME PLACE.
CARPENTERS GAG E1 SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 242,096, dated May 24., 1881,
Application filed March 12, 1881. (ModeL) To'all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. JAMES, of
Galena, in the county of Jo Daviess, and in applicable to the ordinary gage or to mortisegages. 4
The invention has for its objects to provide a means whereby the bar of the gagemay be more readily and conveniently traversed along the surface of the timber, as more fully hereinafter'specified. These objects I attain by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a bottom view of my improved gage. Fig. 2 indicates a transverse section of the gage on the line so a: of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 a view of the forward end of the gagebar. a
The letter A indicates the bar of the gage,
which is rectangular in cross-section, as usual.
' The letterB indicates the slide, which is con- 0 structed in the ordinary manner and fitted upon the bar in such a way that it may be readily moved back and forth upon the same. The
said slide is provided with the usual set-screw,
O, by means of which it may be clamped in any desired position. The lower side of the bar is provided with one or more longitudinal grooves, D, semi-cylindrical in cross-section.
The letter E indicates a roller, one being provided for each groove, and extending longitudinally through the same, being journaled at opposite ends in hearings in the plates F G. The forward plate has a vertical aperture, H, through which is passed the forward marker, I, which is adjustable in said aperture.
In the presentinstance the apparatus is rep- 5 sented as a mortise-gage, and is provided with two rollers. Between the rollers is formed a longitudinal groove, K, in which is adapted to slide a bar, L, which carries at its forward end a marker, M. The said bar, at its rear, end is provided with a button or projection, N, by which it may be adjusted in its groove.
The operation of my improved gage will be readily understood, in connection with the above description, withontfurther explanation. 5 5
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the bar A, provided with rollers, as described, the adjustable marker 1, 6o sliding marker M, secured to bar N, and the slide B, all arranged substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of I March, 1881.
WILLIAM A. JAMES.
