UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM V. WALLACE, OF DORSET, VERMONT.
AIR-FOUNTAIN AND AIR-COOLING APPARATU S.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,083, dated May 24, 1881.
' Application filed April 8,1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM V. WALLACE, of Dorset, in the county of Bennington and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Air-Fountains or Air Cooling and Purifying Apparatus, of which the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of my preferred form, and Fig. 2 a modification. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of my device, in which the reservoirs are shown partially closed to prevent the spilling of the water or other fluid.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and portable device for making, cooling, disinfecting, and medicating of the air in rooms and apartments; and to this end the invention consists of a fan-bellows or other airagitating device, located and confinedwithin stationary walls of linen or other suitable water-conducting material.
It consists, further, of certain details of construction, hereinafter more fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, S S is a frame of any suitable construction, supporting. a train of gearing, f f f j, which drives a fan, 0', or other suitable air agitating device. I) is :a weight for imparting motion to this train of gearing through the medium of the cord d and pulleys a a a at the top and bottom of the frame S. I have shown this system of devices for driving the agitating mechanism; but it is obvious that any motor power of a suitable nature may be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention. 7
e e and g are water-reservoirs, which are connected by strips of linen d, or other suitable fluid-conductingmaterial, and are kept moist with water or other material from the reservoirs' e c and g.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a modification of my device, in which the driving-shaft of the fan or other air-agitatin g device is in a vertical position. This form is specially adapted for sickrooms, for purifying the air, and evaporating water or medicinal compounds, and can be made in compact form for easy transportation from one room to another.
inserted in the partial opening. These strips are secured within the opening by a light packing of rubber, h, or any simple means.
fis a funnel-shaped aperture, through which the supply of water or other material is introduced.
The object of this construction is to provide a device applicable to steam-cars, steamships, or other vessels when there is danger of the water spilling by the motion of said conveyances, and also provide a device for household use, which can be carried from room to room without spilling the water or other material. I
The operation and advantages of my device in cooling, purifying, disinfecting, and medicating theair of rooms, will be apparent to any one skilled in the art.
The linen or other water-conducting material is kept moist by capillary attraction from the reservoirs, while the fan or other agitating device keeps the air in motion and disseminates the moist or charged air through the apartment.
The advantages of such a device are obvious for sick-rooms, and for close, overheated, and
poorly-ventilated rooms.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In an air cooling and purifying apparatus. the fan or other air-agitating device located within a stationary wall or perforated partition, of linen or other suitable water conducting material.
2. In an air cooling and purifying apparatus, the perforated or slotted linen cloth or strips of linen arranged to connect the upper and lower reservoirs, whereby openings are made terial connecting the same, so as to form a for the ready dissemination of charged air by chamber in which is located a fan or other airmeans of a fan or other suitable agitating deagitating device, as shown and described. vice, as set forth.
5 3. In an air cooling and purifying apparatus, Witnesses:
the open or partially-open reservoirs, with linen WARREN R. DUNTON, strips or other suitable water-conducting ma- 1 H. M. HoLLEY.
WILLIAM V. WALLACE.
