UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
FRANCIS B. SNODGRASS, OF HARRISVILLE, WEST VIRGINIA.
ROOT-CUTTING PLOW.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 242,069, dated May 24, 1881.
5 new and useful Improvement in Root-Cutting ,Plows, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a side elevation of the improvement, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, partly in section, through the line as :r, Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view taken through the line y (1 Fig. 1.
The object of this invention is to furnish root-cutting plows so constructed as to rise and pass over obstructions that cannot be cut,
and which will allow the colter to be adjusted ard, O the handles, and D a shovel-plow, all
of which parts are constructed in the ordinary manner.
E is the colter, which passes through a slot in the beam A and has a cutter, F, formed upon each end. The forward or cutting edge of each cutter F is curved or convexed, as shown in Fig.1, so that should it strike an obstruction it cannot cut it will rise and pass over the said obstruction, and will serve as a guard to prevent the point of the plow D from coming in contact with the obstruction. The colter E F is secured in place in the slot ofthe beam A by the wed ,gc-keys G, inserted between its edges and the ends of the said slot. The
5 beam A is strengthened by the plates H attachezl to its upper and lower sides, and which Application filed March 5, 1881. (Model) are slotted to receive the colter E and the wedge-keys G. The colter E F is strengthened against the draft-strain by the rod 1, the forward end of which is forked or slotted to receive the colter E, and is secured to the said colter by a bolt. Several holes are formed in the colter E to receive the bolt ot' the bracerod I, so that the said colter can be adjusted as it wears, to keep its point in proper position. The rear end of the brace-rod I passes through the upper part of the standard B, and has a nut screwed upon it, a beveled washer being interposed between the said nut and standard to give the nut a square bearing.
The plow-beam A and standard B are strengthened by the clevis J, the ends of which are secured to the opposite sides of the beam A, in front of the colter E F, by a bolt, K. The bend of the brace-clevis J is hooked upon the hook ofa bolt, L, which passes through the standard B and has a nut screwed upon its end. With this construction the beam A and standard B are strengthened against the draft-strain without interfering with the colter E, which passes through the bend of the clevis J.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a root-cutting plow, the combination, with the slotted beam A and slotted plates H, of the double-end colter E F and the wedgekeys G, as and for the purpose specified.
FRANCIS B. SNODGRASS.
