WITNESSIS v INVENTOR ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. PRENTICE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
LACING-STU D.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,040, dated May 24, 1881.
Application filed March 15, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE WHITNEY PRENTIOE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county-0f Providence and State ofRhodeIsland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lacing-Studs for Wearing-Apparel; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in lacing-studs for wearing-apparel; and the present improvements consist of a lacing-stud composed of arounded head or hook portion having an intermediate neck connecting said head to a fastening-plate, which is provided with wings to fold upon said neck to stiffen it and reduce friction upon the lacing-strings used in connection therewith, and further provided with sharp penetrating-prongs arranged at the sides thereof, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my complete invention; Fig. 2, a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3, the blank fromwhich the complete device is made.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, Arepresents the blank from which the complete deviceis formed, and which is composed of the rounded or other suitable shaped head or hook portion B, connected by the intermediate neck 0 to the fastening-plate D, said intermediate neck being either suitably rounded or curved upon the side edges to prevent friction upon thelacingstrings, or else provided with the side wings, a, which are bent over upon the neck (J in such a manner as to present smooth edges, as also to afford additional strength or stifl'ness to said neck.
The fastening-plate D may be made either round, square, or other suitable shape, and
provided with the V shape side prongs, b, as shown, which are bent down at right angles to the said plate D, as fully shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
By means of my improvements I am enabled to produce a lacing-stud adapted not only for use on shoes, kid gloves, and corsets, but equally applicable to other articles of wearin g-apparel where lacing-strin gs are employed, the construction of lhe lacing-stud enabling the same to be manufactured very cheaply, while it possesses the requisite degree of strength and durability for the purpose contemplated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- As an improved article of manufacture, the herein described lacing stud, formed of the blank A, bent into shape so as to provide the head B, intermediate neck, 0, provided with overlapping wings a, and table 01, provided with the V-shape-d side prongs, b, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. PRENIIOE.
